The incredible shrinking cervix

So, at my 36 week appt., my OB tells me that I'm 2 cm dilated and 60% effaced.  3 days later my mucus plug falls out. The following week, I'm at 3 cm dilated and 85% effaced.  The OB is convinced that the baby would be here within the week and it would be a fast labor since this is my 2nd kid, so now he wants to see me twice a week.  I see the OB again last Thursday, now I'm at 4cm. I 'only have BH, no pain, no change in patterns, nothing.  He asks if I want to get induced and I said absolutely not since the baby isn't in distress.  Sure, I'm tired on the job (I'm an RN) but there hadn't been any major changes.  Based on OB's opinion, DH and I are convinced the baby's coming soon. I put in my LOA, he calls MIL who changes her flight schedule to get here a few days early.  DH makes arrangements at his job to start his leave this week--apparently, it was a hassle (he's a supervisor in law enforcement) and not an easy process to complete.

I've been home for 5 days without any changes while everyone sits around staring at me.  Smile  My OB is on vacation this week, so I see the physician's assistant who checks me and says.....that my cervix is only 2 cm dilated and I'm 30% effaced. (!!!!).  She stated that since I'm in a job that requires an increased amount of physical demand that I may have been pushed into premature labor and now that I've decreased my physical workload that my cervix has had time to recover.  Whoa.  But it all makes sense because I never felt as though I was in active labor ( and I still don't).  So, DH goes back to work tomorrow and I'm rescheduling that hair appt that I cancelled this week. 

I'm actually relieved because I thought that there was something wrong with my progression into labor.  The only other scenario involving a shrinking cervix that I can think of involves moms put on bedrest to prevent their cervix from continuing to open too soon. 

Sorry this is so long, I just left the OB's office and just had to get this off my chest.

    I've got a magical shrinking cervix too.

    At my 28 week apt the ultrasound tech measured it at 5cm long.

    At my 32 week apt, it had suddenly dropped to 2.1 cm long, so low that they had to use the dildocam to see it.

    BUT! You're right. It could totally be worse. A few extra hours off your feet will do you well :)

    Sounds like the OB wanted to have the baby born before vacation to me, but maybe I'm cynical. :shrug:

    THIS!!  Totally this!  If I had a game buzzer/bell sound effect, I would totally be ringing it right now.

    Yet more proof that cervical checks are completely useless.  I can't imagine why OB's/MW's are still doing them....especially starting so early.

    I can't believe your dr would ask about inducing so early, that sounds off to me.
