Good parenting books for FTM?

Can anyone recommend some good parenting books for first time parents?  I already have, "What to expect when you're expecting" and "What to expect the first year."  I am looking for some books that go more in-depth about labor/delivery, newborn care, and parenting in general.  All suggestions welcome!  TIA!

Re: Good parenting books for FTM?

  • I'm a FTM but have enjoyed The Happiest Baby on the Block for newborn calming. there is also a dvd.

it came highly recommended by the birth classes I took as well

  • Try "Expecting 411" and "Baby 411".  They are so much more interesting and modern than "What to Expect..."  I also love "Brain Rules for Baby".

  • Less of a 411 info book and more of a parenting book, I loved Superbaby by Dr. Jenn Berman.  I'm also a FTM, so I can't speak from experience, but I feel like I understand my future baby's development so much better and will be able to care for him better as well.  I seriously can't say enough about the book.

  • I love Dr. Sears' Baby Book.

  • For labour/delivery I really Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, but I was (am) really into having a natural birth.  I found it really helped to explain what was happening with my body during labour and there are some pretty positive (if a little hippie) birth stories in there.

For parenting I really liked The Baby Whisperer.  They also have pretty informative online forums but the book helped me out a lot.

I LOVE Baby 411. It has saved me countless times- I buy it now for all FTM's.

I personally didn't want to be told how to raise my child, so I stayed away from Baby Wise and Dr. Sear's The Baby Book. Rather, I just wanted information on what to expect with some care suggestions. I found that in Heading Home With Your Newborn and Your Baby's First Year. I also am getting Baby 411 to have as a reference, but I'm not sure I'll be reading that one cover to cover. I also have, but haven't read yet, The Happiest Baby on the Block.
