1st Trimester

Massage ok?

I've read mixed reviews on this online and wanted to get your takes.  My RE said it was perfectly fine without even batting an eye.  I am 6w2d at this point.  I wouldn't have even thought twice about it myself considering I'm only in the first trimester and they won't be doing anything with my abdomin, but there were a few people who suggested not doing it when I googled it.  Granted, the posts I saw were old and from very random sites.  I just don't want to do anything that's unhealthy.  Wednesday's ultrasound showed everything was perfect so far and my hcg and progesterone are awesome if that makes a difference.  Thanks ladies!

Re: Massage ok?

  • My Massage therapist said it was ok, and I saw her earlier this week. She didn't massage my lower back at all. I booked a pregnancy massage so she knew when I got there.

  • Massage is fine, but when you book it, specify a prenatal massage.  Better yet, when you call to book your appointment, ask if the masseur is trained in prenatal massage.

I had one in my early 2nd tri - it was heavenly.

  • I got one at 6 months and 8 months and they were awesome. As long as you tell them you are pregnant they should give you a massage therapist who specializes in prenatal massages

  • I have been getting monthly massages for over a year now and when I found out I was pregnant, they told me I had to wait until my 2nd trimester. Where I go, they will not give you a massage in the 1st trimester because they believe it can cause a miscarriage. With that said, I never asked my doctor but I know other people that have and their doctors said it was fine.
  • The MW at my practice approved massage, and I'm actually going next week. I, too, have heard mixed things about massage in the first tri, but it seems to be a fallacy that it will cause problems. I had regular massages with DS starting about halfway through my pregnancy, and it was the best thing I did for myself.

  • The place I go to says that massage is contraindicated in the first tri, so I'm waiting until I'm about 13.5 weeks.  I don't think there is really any good objective research on how safe it is (there are some claims that first tri massage is related to m/c - not sure how credible that is).

Because it only means waiting a few weeks, I'm erring on the side of caution for now.  Once I hit the second tri, I'll be going as often as possible!

  • Prenatal massage is fine (actually is it really good), but many places won't do a massage on you until you are in your 2nd trimester, so make sure and ask when booking your massage.

  • I have been getting monthly massages for years and I totally trust the place I go. They suggested I don't get any massages in my first trimester then schedule with their certified prenatal masseuse after that, so that's what I'm doing. I figure better safe than sorry.

  • I have bad sciatic pain, and my OB actually recommended massage as a form of treatment/relief.
