I have loved the name "Dane" ever since I watched the Thornbirds miniseries!! But my husband hates it with a passion, so I can never use it.
I also really love the name "Greer" for a girl because I'm an old movie fan and loved Greer Garson, but it's a little too obscure. My biggest fear is saddling my kid with a name that will result in them getting mocked at school.
One of my girls is Greer! I alm also a HUGE old movie fan and Greer Garson was a favorite of mine and my mom's. So I named her Greer Anne (Anne for my mom).
FWIW, I LOVE the name, but I'm into unique names. But whenever I go out people always compliment it. I think you should go for it
I love the name Emma but one of my coworkers (and we have a very small office) JUST had a baby and named her Emma. The frusterating part is that I told that I wanted to use Emma Marie or Emmaline (had the name picked out for years--there is even a story behind it) and next thing I knew, she is using the name Emma. Grrr. I still may use Emmaline or Emmeline, but Emma Marie is just too close.
I'd still use it. Emma is a pretty popular name so everyone knows someone (or five) who have a kid named Emma.
Have you considered Emerson? That's our girl name for this baby (Emerson Mae) and we plan to call her either Eme Mae or Emma Mae, but most likely Eme, since it's less popular.
My friend's baby is Emeline. Cute.
No, I had not, but that is a very cute name! Thanks for the rec.
I'm definately keeping Emmaline or Emmeline or Emeline on my short list. I really don't feel like I can use Emma or Emma Marie, though, because our office is sooo small and this girl is the type that would make a big deal out of the fact that I "stole" her name if I used just straight up Emma. And, frankly, the extreme popularity of the name is another negative, too.

Too funny. This is me EXACTLY!!! I love the name Dane ever since I watched The Thornbirds back in the early 90's and then read the book! DH doesn't hate it, but he isn't a fan. It was so romantic - the love child of the heroine and the Cardinal. But now we have a Great Dane for a pet so I think DH's inclination is to think "dog" when he hears "Dane."
The other name I love is Luca (like Luca from the series "ER")...but the same dog's name is "Lucas" so, again, DH thinks "dog" when he hears the name.
DH likes Isaac. At first, I thought this was cool because Isaac from the Bible was the long-awaited and prayed for son that God promised (I think) Abraham and Rebecca even after they were both very old and Rebecca was barren. I thought it was significant because of our IF situation and we were given such low odds. But then I found out that DH wasn't even THINKING about the story from the Bible but because he wants to name our kid after Isaac Newton. Blech. DH is a huge science geek, in case you can't tell.

Jackson has been my favorite name since 2005 when it wasn't super common. DH said no way, so my car's name is Jackson. Definitely can't name my kid after my car. (Apparently not everyone names their cars...but my sisters named theirs so we're all just weird.)
Also, Andrew because it rhymes with our last name, Gregory (DH's brother's name), and Abby (DH's cousin).

We've wanted Lily for a girl for YEARS, but once we looked at the increasing popularity, we took it off the list. I'm pretty disappointed about that, but neither one of us want top 10-20ish names.
The only boys name we like so far is Zack, but it's a no-go too. My sister got pregnant (from a very bad situation) many years ago and put him up for adoption - he was a Zach and I could never use that name.
I love the name ilsa, but I can't use it because it's already my cousin's name.
Most of the boy's names I like end with -n and that's too matchy with our last name. I also really like the name Aspen for a girl, but I can't use that for the same reason.
I was going to use Harper for either sex because my mom's last name is Harper, but it's too popular now. I also love Coraline but one of my friends named her baby Kora and I feel like that'd be too close.
Oddly enough, I have always liked the name Jasper...Twilight definitely ruined that name. I also love classics like Edward and William but I don't feel like I could get away with those, either.

So would I - it's such a trendy name right now that it wouldn't bother me if I was into trendy names.
A coworker is temporary but your child is forever. Use your name.

DH and I both have J names and our last name starts with J too, so there is no way we are giving our kids J names...we will not be that family.
DH and I were set on Jackson, but we saw my SIL this weekend, who is PG with twins and due in May, and they are also set on Jackson.
We're both super bummed.

LOLz to this!

Mrs.Jenni....I agree Reid is the better choice!
Haha....
We named our Cat Jackson
I don't want to use family names and we're both one of six kids (and I have LOTS of cousins), so that limits us.
Also, girl names ending in -ra are out due to our last name. I love Cora and Mara
Joe (Joseph) - I have an uncle, brother, GrandFIL, and H's cousin, ex-stepdad, ex-boyfriend...but I do love the name.
I love this post - very funny and interesting!

I really like the name Ryan for a boy, but that's my brother's middle name, and we've decided not to name our kid after anyone in our families.
PP, I will never think of "Madeline" the same way again

Sorry
. It's a beautiful name, cross dressers notwithstanding...
