Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 month old won't nap during the day!

ok... baby is a little over 2 months old now.. and he doesn't nap during the day!!! he'll fall asleep while feeding but usually wake up when i pick him up to burp him or to put him in his bouncer (he has reflux, so i can't just lie him down after feeding).

i just put him in his crib wide awake to see if he'll fall asleep, but have a feeling he'll just cry when he gets bored...  i guess the good thing is he's usually so tired that he's started going 5-7 hours between feedings at night... of course he's usually fussy around bedtime, which can be quite tiring for us.

is this normal??? aren't babies supposed to be napping 2 or 3 times during the day at this age?

  • Some babies don't nap.  DS takes 3-4 short naps a day, never longer than 45 minutes, usually only 20 minutes.

  • Ours is the same! We are lucky to get more than 20 min naps out of this one.

I've decided to change things up a little and start a solid nap time routine and see if it makes any difference.

I'd complain more but she sleeps well at night. 10/10:30 - around 4am, and then 4:30-7:30, and she'll sleep again until 9-10am (I suppose this one could count as a morning nap)

  • i AM thankful that he's been sleeping well at night... but it's tiring during the day since he rarely naps (unless feeding) and constantly wants to be entertained!  have to let him cry so that i can eat and do things around the house!
  • My dd also has reflux and she has been on medicine for 3 weeks.  It hasn't been until last week that she has been napping better.  She'll eat, we play and then she will cry to let me know she has had enough and then I rock her to sleep.  I have just been letting her nap on the couch or on a blanket on the floor.  She still fights the crib (even though she sttn in it).  Try keeping your lo awake after the feeding, maybe that might help?

No you don't.  Housework can wait for naptime, and I learned to eat with one hand very quickly.

  • Agreed that it is exhausting. The thing I find hardest is not knowing how long of a break I'll have from active baby care. The Ergo and sling are a huge help.

I know from nanny experience that it will get better. That keeps me going.

Give me a break. It's okay for her to take a few minutes to eat. Specially if she is breastfeeding, it's very important to eat healthy and regularly. Her baby isn't going to think she doesn't love him if he fusses for a little while. She's obviously a carrying, loving mother.

You don't have to be one of those parents that carry their babies around the house all day long and can't get anything done. I was one of those babies and experienced really bad separation anxiety until I was in 4th grade. I couldn't even spend the night a friends house and I have vowed not to put my child through that.

  • Have you considered baby wearing? My firstLO took three naps in the moby wrap at that age. Not as convenient as a crib but I think it helped her fussiness because she was upright. We would wrap her, walk around to ensure she was fast asleep, and them go about our business for and hour or sovehile she slept. Also, do you have a swing? That might be worth a try, too. I know some kids don't nap but I would venture to say all two month olds still need naps, and thier mommies need them to nap!

  • I have considered it, but am hesitant just because I would hate for him to become so used to it that he only falls asleep when close to me physically....  We do have a swing, and he likes that and used to fall asleep in that easily (again, there were some concerns that he will only fall asleep when rocked) but now he seems to be bored of it.

Yesterday he did nap twice for a little less than 20 minutes.  A few people I talked to said that their babies didn't nap much if at all at around his age but soon got into a nap routine around month 4....  In the meantime, I guess I will have to start seeing how much he naps while feeding and burping and see if that's enough.  At least he's pretty happy!  That is, until he gets bored and wants some entertainment~  :)

  • Thanks for the support!  If he napped, then of course I would eat and do things around the house when he naps!  But the problem is he DOESN'T nap~

Just trying to be balanced about it so that he is able to grow up to be independent (and with as few bad habits as possible) and still feel very loved by his parents.
