Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How many words does your 14 month old DS say?

DS has said mama, dada, hi, and bye bye. He's also said ball but only if I say it to him first. He really doesn't say much else. I am trying to work with him on simple words like ball, cup, etc when he has these things, but just curious what your LOs are saying...if anything?

Re: How many words does your 14 month old DS say?

  • At 14 months my son had not said anything.  He is almost 19 months and is still not speaking.  I would be so thrilled with a mama right about now.

  • My LO is about 2 weeks shy of 14 months, but she says "Dada" and knows she is saying it. Otherwise it is babble, like day, baba, kiki"

  • My 14 month old doesn't say much un-prompted...mama, dada, and hot.  He will mostly imitate when I say things, "ish" for fish and "at" for cat, for example.

I really have no idea what's "normal" or expected at this age, but my pedi said she wanted him to have 6 un-prompted words by 15 months...

  • 1)  All kids are different.

    2) He is saying some words, so that is good.

    3) Just keep talking to him and reading to him.  He'll pick it up in his own time.

FTR, my 14 month old says mama, dada, dog, cat, car, bye, hi, no, and maybe a few others.  He is also proficient in toddler-ese (whining and babbling).

  • Don't worry. It really depends on the kid - DS1 took forever to start talking (and even had some speech therapy at two), whereas DS2 has at least 15 words at 16 months. Your DS sounds totally normal!
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • At 14 months, he had about 5 words. I think to put an actual number on words by 15 months, by your pedi, is kind of silly. Communication is a lot more than just unprompted words. A lot of kids go through an "explosion" a few months later. DS went through his at about 19 months and now he knows hundreds of words, speaks in 3-4 word sentences.
  • He's a chatty little bugger and has been for a few months. They're all different, obviously. The only thing his pedi cared about at twelve months was mama and dada.
  • About the same as your LO. Mama, Dada, Key (kitty), bath, ball

  • Not a whole lot!  She will repeat after me sometimes and say things like baby & thank you.  She has yet to say mama.  She does say hi & bye though.

  • He says mama, dada, dog, bye, outside, night night, store, all done, get down. Obviously the last two sound more like "ah dah" and "ga dah" but he says them correctly in context when he's finished eating and wants to get out of his high chair, lol.

He also knows Zumba...he says "ba ba" and dances. haha

  • Hannah has quite a few words- maybe 10-12 that she uses whenever she sees the item/person/animal. She does not say mama. I think every kid is so different at this age. My nephew didn't say his first word (mama and dada included) until he was 18 months old.

  • My DS has quite a few words- tick tock, mama, dada, bye-bye, kitty, uh-oh, yucky, no, night night, all done. But I think he's a more verbal kid and he only started walking a little over a week ago.  My niece on the other hand, who is a month older than DS started walking at 10 months and still only says a couple words.  Kids are just different and develop quicker/slower in different areas.
