Refusing to nurse on one side?

LO seems to prefer to nurse on my right side and is refusing my left.  I thought maybe I had a clog or something so I pumped and everything seems to be flowing just fine but I did get a clot of milk out.  Any other ideas on what might be causing this?

Re: Refusing to nurse on one side?

  • Mine is the exact same. DS doesnt like lefty. I realized it is because my flow is much faster than the right and he didn't like it. He much rather take his time. Just keep at it. Patience and persistence.

  • I had this issue, too.  I could only get her to latch on the left side.  How old is your LO?  When my milk came in, my right side was too engorged/hard for her to latch onto.  I also have a flatter nipple on that side.  I would pump before she ate, pump in between feedings, try hand expressing, warm compresses/showers, and massages to try and soften my breast for her.  It took a couple of days with just feeding on the left, but now she's latching well on both sides again.  I don't really know if any one thing helped - maybe my milk just fully came in and regulated itself.  But, keep offering it to her and as pp said - patience and persistence.  Good luck!
  • Have you tried different nursing positions?  With my LO, cross cradle doesn't work so well on my left side, but it's not an issue when we do side lying or if I'm reclined on the glider and she's on top.
