Baby Names

Whoa Nelly

A gal I work with is pregnant and has announced her name for her baby girl.  Ava.  Now yes, I think we can all agree that it is super popular, but I at least think it is still a pretty name.

Now if a name isn't your style or whatever.  Great.  But Jesus - this poor girl has taken so much flack today for this name!  I mean people are just being mean!  And now people are ripping her apart on Facebook.

I think people have a little too much invested on what this gal is naming her baby...they should get a hobby - like shutting up!

Re: Whoa Nelly

  • For naming her DD Ava? Seriously? The name is NMS, but it's not bad in the slightest.

  • For naming a girl Ava? Hmmmm. Yeah, popular, but a nice name.

I'm not sure if this is true in this case, but I've noticed a pattern a lot on this board: some people are really sensitive about the comments people make about their chosen names, and get defensive if it's not unanimously positive. Some comments are truly out of line, and I try to avoid making digs about people's final name choices. But for some people, "wow, that's really popular," is heard as "your kid isn't going to be special with a name that everyone has" and little comments about archenemies, exes, or pets with that name are seen as a personal slam.

If people on Facebook are ripping into her, though, she needs new Facebook friends.

  • Yeah- its more certainly the popularity issue.  But - that's what she gets for sharing her name I suppose!
  • Geesh. It's not like she's not naming her baby Angel Stripperface (I'm sure someone's done it) or Reign Beau (actual name of some celebrity's kid.)

  • And that is exactly why I don't tell people the name we choose until after the baby is born.  It's hard enough to agree on a name that you and DH both really like without getting everyone else's two cents about how they knew this person or that person with that name.  I personally think it's really rude to criticize somebody's choice after they've chosen it.  You wouldn't (or shouldn't!) say it in the hospital, so why before they're born?
  • I thought this was going to be a post about the name "Nelly." I was actually going to thumbs up it!

Yeah, those people are crazy. I'd love to hear what their alternative names are...

  • It shouldn't matter if she's naming her kid God, no one should comment on anything because it is none of their business!  Why does everyone think that their opinions are necessary!  Keep them to yourself!!!

AMEN!!!!  that is EXACTLY why we're not telling anyone our choices either.....it's hard enough for us to agree on a name, let alone having to deal with people bashing it for not liking it...then again, those who ask opinions should expect honest answers (to some extent) !!!!

    Ditto

This kind of backlash is part of the reason we kept our name ideas largely to ourselves.
