Sick with sinus cold/head cold..What should I do to get better?

Hey Ladies,

I've been having an awful sinus cold/head cold for the past few days and it's driving me crazy and making me feel so exhausted. My eyes water, my nose runs and is stuffy, my head constantly has a headache and pressure. I feel so tired. My throat doesn't hurt at all.

I haven't taken medications at all this pregnancy, not even tylenol. What have you done to deal with a cold? Any suggestions? Lots of fluid and rest aren't working their magic yet...

Thanks,

C.

  • My doctor said I could take Tylenol Cold or Claritan D to help.  I know you don't take medicine but it might help.  I did take 1/2 tab of Unisome to help me sleep at night.  It worked better then nothing.  Otherwise get your shower all steamy and take a warm shower.  That might help you.  You can also try vics or a netti pot.  I have never used one but I hear people swear by them.  Good luck I know how hard they are when you are pg!

  • hot steam-- just put you face over a bowl of steaming water and keep inhaling.  that and some regular coke helped me-- i haven't had caffeine in months, so the caffeine immediately helped my sinus pain/headache.  hope you feel better soon.

  • I have been plagued with sickness several times due to my weakened pregnant immune system. This last time my throat was so sore I couldn't swallow my own saliva and couldn't sleep well for about 5 nights but had a sore throat for a week and a half (seemed to be viral though so antibiotics wouldn't have helped).

Anyways something that really helps with your sinuses is heat. Do you have one of those bean bags that you can put in the microwave? If not you can put a cup or two of rice in a big clean sock or other fabric enclosure and microwave for a couple minutes (time depends on the amount of rice). Lay down and put over your forehead and sinuses for like 30 minutes. It really helps release the pressure and pain and you should do it as hot as you can stand it. Also, do you sinus rinse? My "Ayr" sinus rinse is amazing. If you make the solution stronger with 2-3 of the salt packets instead of just 1 it really helps draw out all of the mucus/fluid and leaves me feeling clear for a little bit. This is safe for pregnancy and can be done several times a day as needed.

    But definitely try heat!

  • Sudafed makes these little "shower soother" tablets you put on the floor of your shower to make it like being in a human-sized humidifier that smells like Vicks vaporub.  You just stand in the hot water and breathe in the vapors and steam.  I highly recommend.
  • Swipe a stripe of Vicks Vaporub under your nose and go to bed.  That's what I did.

Know that you're going to heal slower though just because you're pregnant.  I know you're probably miserable and this is not what you want to hear Sad

    Get better!

  • The sinus rinse or netty pot really helps me a lot.  I have horrible sinus problems.  Try hot tea and things that will loosen up mucus too, even robitussin helps. But if you don't want to take something, sitting in the bathroom with the shower on hot and breathing the steam helps a lot.  A humidifier in the bedroom will help when your sleeping and elevating your head a little when asleep so the post nasal drip doesn't give you a sore throat. Hope that you feel better soon!!!

  • I'm just like you and don't take anything.  I had a horrid cold about 2 weeks ago. Use saline spray for your nose to clear you up, use a humidifier, and drink lots of OJ and warm fruit tea (i like the lemon one). It'll get better soon!!

  • Call your doctor. Mine gave me a baby safe antibiotic and it has worked like magic.

  • Thanks so much ladies!!! You're suggestions are really helpful. I'll try some of these and see what helps. Pregnant immune systems are the worst aren't they!! I've been sick more while pregnant than ever before!
