Placenta Experience! Not a question. My actual experience :)

Hi everybody!

I know we get this question all the time and I finally have some light to shed on it!

I suffered with serious baby blues and PPD with my first and this time around, I opted to do a placenta smoothie right after birth and have the rest encapsulated. My midwives brought them back to me the morning after I gave birth. I took 1 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon and 2 before bed until I used them all up. I had almost 4 weeks worth.

I noticed the following: My milk came in within 16 hours of delivery. I stopped bleeding at 11 days PP (for the most part). I didn't have any and I mean ANY sadness like I did the first time. No weaping or emotional outbursts. I felt sane.

I would do it again in a heartbeat.

  • Good to hear! I talked with my MW at my last appointment about doing encapsulation since I never really knew what it was before. I don't know if I could handle any type of smoothie or ingesting it raw, in fact I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to. But I can take a pill! I'm really excited for the encapsulation, even though my husband looks at me like I have lost my mind. :-)

  • your story is exactly mine!!!

as for ingesting it raw, when it's in a smoothie (assuming you have a decent blender), you will never know it's in there. it's really a very small piece of placenta in each smoothie..perhaps the amount of 2-3 average sized strawberries. i blended mine with strawberries for color. it has no taste at all and this mostly vegetarian mama could not tell you the difference between the smoothies i ate PP and the ones i'm having for breakfast now sans placenta!

  • See stories like this make me not care what DH or MW thinks. I brought it up at my apt this week and I was surprized that MW didn't really rec. it. She was not against it. She just said "ya know, you could just take a multi vitamin". Even if I can't taste it in a smoothie I would have to touch it and cut it up and I dont even like to touch chicken or anything. Its just too weird for me. I really wanted her to refer me to someone that would encapsulate it for me.

  • Thank you for sharing your experience!  I had horrible baby blues and struggled through postpartum depression with my DS.  I"m planning to have my placenta encapsulated with this one to help fend of these feelings.  The cost is slightly daunting (haven't asked MW if she offers it, doula that does it in our area is $300) but it's worth it if it really has these effects.  I'm feeing more and more positive that this is something I want to have done.  Thanks again!

  • ive looked into the encapsulation but nowi have another question. can i cut it up myself and freeze cubes to do a smoothie everyday? and save the cost of encapsulating. or is it better to take as pills?

what else was in the smoothie?

    thanks dor sharing your experience.

  • Thank you so much for sharing. I also had 6 weeks of what I would call baby blues and now with this one on the way I won't have that luxury with a 4.5 year old! I planned on encapsulating anyway but now am intrigued at the smoothie idea!

I'll def do encapsulation and ask more questions about doing some raw right post delivery!

  • Thank you so much for posting this! Even though everyone I know (except DH) thinks I'm crazy, I'm really looking forward to encapsulating my placenta. I hope I get results similar to yours!

  • I've been saying "if we have the extra money then I'm doing this", but the positive results kind of make me want to get a jar and just put cash aside whenever possible and save up.

  • I guess I'm in the minority here but I just can't get on board with eating a placenta. It just seems too weird and gross, like self-cannibalism. I can see burying it under a fruit tree or something, but I'm probably just going to have mine thrown out as medical waste.

  • I love reading positive experiences!  I still wish I'd had mine down after Atticus was born.

If you don't mind me asking, do you know which method your encapsulator used to prepare it?

  • I consumed over 1/2 of mine via smoothie.  I chopped it up 2 days PP while DH was out (grossed him out).  I put the large cubes into an ice cube tray and froze it.  I made a smoothie with frozen strawberries, OJ, banana, yogurt, and 2-3 pieces of placenta.  It didn't taste bad, but it did gross me out.

Having said that, I don't think it did anything.  I bled forever.  I ended up in the ER at 6 days PP due to a softball sized clot.  I was still bleeding at 7 weeks PP when I got my Mirena.  Breastfeeding was easy for me, so I don't know if the placenta had anything to do with it or not.

I know if you freeze it, it looses some of its nutrients so I would double check on that

    OP So glad to hear!!
