July 2012 Moms

Crafters, come commiserate with me!

I really want to start making stuff for my baby, but I am not liking the gender neutral supplies I am finding. I have some handspun yarn for a hat that I will use, but I really want to start knitting an afghan and start sewing for the baby. Ahhhh!

I am calling on Monday to set up an elective ultrasound to find out the sex at 17w, since my a/s is not scheduled yet. I know, bad, bad.

I just wish Knit Picks had more colors in washable yarns. ;)

  • I hear you. I'd love to crochet something for the baby but I haven't found the right project yet. I'm finding out the sex on Saturday but it won't really impact my choices for colors - I'm just insanely curious.

Absolutely. Just let me know what colors you want, etc. I might have enough handspun yarn for you.  Shoot me a FB message. :). Hats are easy and I have this great pattern for a cute gnome style one, but we can talk about that too.

  • I bought a bunch of cotton yarn on sale and have been using it to knit things like bibs and washcloths. Let me see if I can find it online. Its a nice rainbow yarn---bright and fun but also gender neutral.

ETA: its the peaches n creme line. And cotton is nice because its so washable and soft. For some reason this pic doesnt look as bright as it is IRL. It's really cheerful.

Oh I hear ya! I have been itching to schedule an elective US done too since I don't have my 20 scan scheduled yet either.  I don't go to the doctor either again till the 26th so it won't be scheduled till at least then. I am wanting to know so I can start picking fabrics for the bedding I am making!

    I wish I could knit!!

You can! I taught myself how to knit two weeks ago by watching YouTube videos and I've already knitted a scarf with a complicated pattern (for practice) and now I'm ready to start on baby blankets. I seriously taught myself in 10 minutes (while in the car watching on my iphone!) and had never knitted or crocheted before in my life.

  • Blankets aren't hard. Check out Ravelry.com if you aren't already on it. You can find tons of patterns, get advice, etc. :)

I hear you. My Pinterest feels like it's exploding with ideas but I cannot commit until I know the sex which isn't for another month. Blah!  I can knit scarves but how hard is it to try  a small blanket?  I've never attempted it.

If you can knit a scarf, you can definitely knit a baby blanket. They are a great place to start too, because they are small and don't take as long as a big afghan. And they aren't too intricate, like a sweater. Its just a big square!

This basketweave pattern is easy, just knits and purls:

I started crocheting my first scarf in...I think..2009? Still not finished. Sigh.

I'm itching to get crafty, though. It's weird for me because I've never been crafty or really had any desire to be. But now I want to make everything.

  • I can only knit with a loom...I am liking the infinity loom so I can make a blanket. Any good places to buy soft yarn? I always have trouble deciding what kind to buy.

I buy the majority of my yarn from Knitpicks.com. They are awesome and just got a whole bunch of new yarns in.

  • My entire family knits and crochets, so they have already been planning all this stuff to make Baby V. Basically I'm having to find the random projects no one is thinking about to make myself for the baby. I even knew not to register for any blankets because I'll end up with at least 5 made for me. It's fun to have a crafty family.

  • My SIL's mom taught me by having me make dishcloths.  Super quick to make and we bought a couple books so I could learn all the different stitches.  Of course then I had a ton of dishcloths so I gave those to my grandma to use.  Later my college friend taught me how to do hats.  I've made a few afghans but had to step away from the knitting needles after I accidentally pulled off half the stitches on the needle of a blanket that was 1/3rd completed. Stupid needle cap can fallen off at some point.  I had a big freak out tantrum and haven't touched them since.  Went back to cross-stitch.  Lol!  Crochet is just challenging to me, for some bizarre reason.

Weird, I'm the opposite. I can't quite grasp knitting but I've been crocheting as long as I can remember. You'll get the hang of it :)

  • One of my good friends said the same thing.  She has a hard time with knitting but crochet is easy for her.  The funniest thing a friend ever said to me was this: "do you knit?" I said, "yes," then she followed up with "one stick or two sticks?"  It took me a few seconds to realize she was asking if I knit or crochet.  Lol!

  • I'm late to the party but I love Debbie Bliss yarn and patterns - she has lots of books including several cute ones devoted to baby and kid knits.  I've done tons of booties and now I'm onto more challenging things (for me) like sweaters.  She has yarn that she recommends for her baby patterns and they are all washable.  The baby cashmerino is so soft and lovely.

  • What about a cute chevron blanket in gender-neutral colors?  I've sort of been on a chevron kick lately.

  • I just learned how to knit last month---EEK---still making myself a scarf but I cannot wait to make something for baby... I too will wait till I find out the sex though (a/s will be @ 18 weeks for me)... I have so many yellow ones from DS that I would realy like something gender specific.

Question b/c I am new to knitting.. how do you know what to buy online w/o looking at it/touching it?  Any suggestions?
