Does anyone produce too much milk?

Do you consider it a problem? I have a "fireman's hose" as a friend described it the other day or in other words. I spurt milk a lot when DC starts feeding. She handles it pretty well, but sometimes gets overwhelmed with the let down. I pump occasionally when she sleeps through a feeding or if I feel that she hasn't drained the breast. Do you think I should stop doing that? What have your doctors recommended? Do your doctors think it is a bad thing?

  • me. i started getting some killer clogged ducts when DD started sleeping longer stretches at night and for a while, I was waking up several times a night to pump. what i've learned is that you should try not to pump as much or you will keep producing more. gradually reduce the amount you pump each time you feel too full (i,e, instead of pumping to drain, pump for a few minutes less than usual until you're not pumping at all when DC sleeps through a feeding). I know this is a "problem" a lot of people would love to have, but it does have its downside if you don't manage it well. i've had mastitis twice. no fun.

  • I had this problem and then finally my production leveled out after about 2 1/2 months. I wouldn't pump because it is signaling to your body that you need all that milk. It is uncomfortable, but it will pass. DS was STTN for a good month before my body adjusted so I wasn't waking up totally engorged in the morning. It may take time.
  • My early BF days while still home were very much like you describe.  I stocked up all the extra milk and STILL use it for emergencies and days where I skip a pumping at work, or for weekend trips when I am away from her on errands, etc.  Completely normal, and you should continue w/ your schedule so as not to harm supply.  Keep it up!!

  • Man I wish! I just posted on the VT board about the Williston group, if you want to take a look, I know that board isn't too active.  Thanks!

  • Yeah, I'm a gusher.  DD gained a full pound in just 12 days.  I have to pump after every feeding.  At least I'm building a nice supply for when I go back to work.  And at this rate, I could stop at 6 months and have enough supply for 6 more months!
  • I do the exact same thing as you. My doctor said she would get used to it and it is better in the long run, since the older baby can get more milk and won't get frustrated. Once their mouths can catch up then feedings will go faster.
  • Yes I have always had an oversupply. It has just started evening out recently at 4 months. It's odd to have a normal person's supply. I always spray DD during let down when she pulls off to cough and choke, poor little thing.

I built up a nice frezzer supply and then slowly weaned myself off the pump. Now I don't have to pump every day. The more you pump, the more you make so if you don't want too much of an oversupply only pump to comfort not to empty.

  • ditto bakler.  i had major oversupply until 4 months, now i'm almost producing just what she needs- only about 6-8 oz a day more instead of 12+.  It's nice.  and kate did get used to the fast and forceful letdown- she can drain a boob in about 5 minutes now.
