Name Pronounciation Question

So we are looking at names and want to honor our Russian heritage.  We have a couple of names but I wanted to ask how you would pronounce the following:

Lev - would you pronounce it lev (rhymes with less) or leave?

Another alternative spelling Liev (like Liev Schreiber from Scream) and that is pronounces Li-ev.

Are either of the choices harder or easy to pronounce?

Thanks for your help!

The part I bolded sounds the easiest to me.

  • If I saw "Lev" I would pronounce it rhyming with "less."  A childhood friend's father's name was pronounced rhyming with "leave" but I don't know how he spelled it.  I have to admit that the pronunciation of the actor Liev's name had me stumped until I heard someone say it correctly.  I love the name pronounced at "leave" or "li-ev."

I don't know if that's helpful at all but that's my input.

  • I really like Liev - pronounced (leave) - totally cute and original =)  Plus it would be easier to pronounce.

  • For Lev I would pronounce it as I see it...with a soft e...

For Liev , in America it will probably most often need correction as most would say " " leave".

My name isn't " American" or English .... And the foreign spelling appears to be a typo in English so people always think I either can't write my name or it is a typo. That gets annoying. I use the English pronouciation of it because the original language version is too hard for others to wrap their head around.

  • I just read a book with the name Lev and pronounced it (in my head) with a soft e (to rhyme with less) the entire time.  Is that how it is classically pronounced?

Lev, I would pronounce "leh-v" (like less) no problem.

Liev I would probably pronounce like "leave," as in "believe," but since "believe" has an e at the end, I would probably ask the person, "Is your name like 'leave' or 'li-ev?' So I guess I'd have problems with the latter pronciation!

    Hope that helps!

  • I worked with a woman named Liev (pronounced Leave- a) I think it's really pretty!
  • Like PPs I would pronounce Lev to rhyme with "less".

Liev I would pronounce like the actor Liev Schreiber - "leave"

  • I'd pronounce Lev as it appears ( Lev - would you pronounce it lev (rhymes with less) ) esp since it would make me think of the shortened form of names like levanya.

  • Thank you so much!  You ladies have been extremely helpful and I am a little more confident about choosing names.
