What's the big difference in Wal-Mart and Target?

Seriously here people, I don't get it. First let me explain, we don't have a Target within an hour of my house so I rarely go. But... when I do get there I just don't get what the big difference is, and I have paid attention and tried to figure it out. I know that the shelves are nicer, their selection is somewhat smaller (from the ones I've been in), definitely not as many grocery selections at Target anyway, but again Target may have nicer brand names (as far as clothes).

In your opinion... what's the big difference?

Re: What's the big difference in Wal-Mart and Target?

  • I think Targets stuff is way cuter.Target has some adorble stuff and our wal-marts stuff is super plain jane. I just prefer the style of Target better. Targets clothes are super cute and they tend to carry things for the house that are just amazingly cute. AGHHH I love Target, I really try to stay out of their so I don't spend money.

Honestly though our wal-mart is just such a trashy place. LOL, maybe I feel a bit bad saying that but you step foot into out wal-mart and it is like a SNL skit, the trashiness is so over the top and funny. I swear I'm not making this up. I have been to other wal-marts and they are not as bad as ours at all but I stay away from ours because every one is super rude and the store is always a mess. But the one by my MIL's in nicer. I just really prefer Target.

But as far as grocery shopping goes I bet they are similar, but I do Kroger, Farmers Market, and occasionally a specialty store so I don't really know...

Edited to add that I don't think all Wal-Marts are bad. Ours is just a vortex of weirdness and people screaming at their wives/children/ strangers. HAHA, like a people of wal-mart meetup or something.

  • Target is just nicer overall, in it's appearance, the cleanliness, the employees are nicer and more helpful, less wait time to check out...Generally less trashy people than at Walmart (not saying ONLY trashy people shop at WalMart, but overall).

I realized where I grew up we never went to Walmart. Always shopped at Target, but there were tons of targets and just one Walmart that wasn't too close.  Here, it is the opposit and therefor I usually shop at Walmart.  Target is just further, plus the closest ones to me aren't even super targets, so their selection is slim.

  • I LOVE Target- I deal with Wal-Mart. And I'm going to sound like a snoody-biznatch here...

Targets in our area are a TON nicer than Wal-Mart. Also, all the smut of our area is at Wally World, rarely ever at Target. So that's my number 1 difference.

Also, the clothes are nicer at Target. Wal-Mart's clothes seem so cheap, and ugly most of the time, that Target is just more of a step up (?) but still wildly affordable.

I also like Target because it is smaller and I don't feel overwhelmed when I'm there.

And finally, I hate Wal-Mart's ethical practices in terms of their products and the foreign workshops they are made in. I haven't heard/read/seen much about Target's practices but Wal-Mart's is disgusting. Forcing their workers to live in "dorms" and pay rent out of their already horrendously low pay checks. Their workers have also claimed that they were forced to work 24 hours straight with no breaks, and not getting paid for some of their time. Not to mention all the domestic disputes against Wal-Mart being prejudice against women in management positions.

  • I'm sure if I had a Target and Wal-Mart in the same distance from me I would probably choose Target, but since Wal-Mart is the only thing we have within an hour, everyone shops at our Wal-Mart and its actually very nice. I'm sure that in other places it can very vastly different. Anyways, I know that Target overall seems to be everyone's favorite but I was really just wondering. :o)

As far as clothes, I just don't shop at either only go to Wal-Mart for necessities (groceries, cleaning supplies, and such) and had rather spend the money on clothes at TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls.

  • Walmart around here is suck-o.  I went a couple times in different locations but never again.  The stores are dirty and not well laid-out, the merchandise is sub-par, I would never buy actual food from there, and the people (other shoppers and employees) are rude and annoying

  • As a PP said, I am really opposed to number Wal-Mart's practices, especially the way the treat their employees and I think they are just bad for the economy overall.  On top of that, I think the products at Target are actually  better.  At one point I tried to shop Wal-Mart in an attempt to save money and swear some of the same exact products that I always buy were different (for instance, I have been using Jergens original scent lotion for years, the Wal-Mart stuff smelled different and felt different when I put it on).  Also, in our area, our Target has almost a full grocery store with a great selection of organic foods, whereas the Wal-Mart has very little (mostly pre-packaged junk) food.
  • I generally prefer Target because the clothes and home decor are nicer, they offer what I want/need at a reasonable price, they are laid out nicer and not to sound snobby, but around here the Target clientele is much nicer too.

  • Target is more expensive, but they have sales.  Target seems to have more specialty items when it comes to food, but they have a much smaller food selection especially meat and produce.  I like Target's stuff for the house and clothes better.  I think Target's Circo brand clothing is a good price and holds up well.  I forget what brand Walmart's plain leggings and shirts are, but they shrink, fade, and tear at the seams.  I like Target's Up & Up brand of diapers more than Walmart's Parent's Choice.  Target always has shorter lines.  Walmart is more relaxed with their return policy.  Walmart also has a lawn and garden section and tires and oil changes.  Only some Target's around here sell alcohol, but all Walmarts do.

You would probably buy some food there if it truly was basically your only option... not being rude at all. We have a Kroger and Food City that I shop for fresh meats & produce but as far as cans and such, I can't imagine there being an actual difference in the food quality. A can of corn is a can of corn, and despite what a PP said I can't imagine that Jergens lotion is actually made different for Wal-Mart than it is a Target, think that's kinda absurd. Our Wal-Mart is gigantic and very well maintained, and the biggest employer in our factory town (where most factories are being shut down b/c of stuff going over seas) so as far as their treatment to their employees, here on a basic level people are just thrilled to have the jobs.

All that being said, I will need to check out Target more often b/c I don't go often...

  • I seriously think that it depends on where you are located.  I HATED going to Walmart where we used to live, it was dirty, and everyone seemed dirty too.  We have since moved and Walmart is more convenient for me to go to so I had to give it another try. It's like doing a 180, the greeter wears a nice sweatervest and has carts ready for you to go.  I love it, H always laughs at me.

I still go to Target, we always used their formula brand, and they have a much better baby section than my Walmart plus they always have good sales on baby clothes.

  • Target caters especially to women. Their aisles are wider, and they have stricter policies on how many carts can be in a check-out line before they're required to open a new one. They really do give 5% of their profits as charitable contributions in the communities they serve.

Also, they have this sweet cajun trail mix in their store brand (market.. something) that is AMAZING. IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. If you're into that kind of thing.

  • There isn't much different here. Target has cuter clothes, but I refuse to spend like $40 for a dress at Target. The people are just bad here...

  • In terms of appearance and ease of shopping:

Walmart: small parking spaces, cramped parking lots (this is not limited to just the Walmart in my area; I've noticed the same thing at Sam's Club in other cities and it drives me crazy), dimly lit stores, dingy floors, and poorly organized in my opinion.

Target: much larger parking lot/spaces, store is brighter, less of a "warehouse" feel, cleaner, better organized.

  • I am originally from WA state, and the wal-marts around my area are very clean & friendly.

When DH and I moved to NJ we were ecstatic that we had a wal-mart within 5 minutes, but what a huge disappointment it was. Dirty, very low selection, definately trashy..We even witnessed what pp mentioned of family YELLING at each other--the whole store (we were paying so the cashier areas) got completely quiet and they still kept yelling..I'm pretty sure the lady said the f*** word!

Now we are in CO and the wal-marts are also great here. For the first time I have experienced a SUPER target!

Let me add to that before I had DD I never remember shopping at target...Although I did register there only because I liked their baby selection much better than Walmarts.

Now, I only buy formula at target. I buy enfamil, but unlike walmart, target offers store coupons, which can be combined with manufacturer and rebate checks making for great savings.

I also have to add, that I LOVE targets home/decor!!! LOVE IT!! =) IMO, I think target offers a better quality than walmart in that aspect.

  • I think it depends on where you live.  Our Target is GROSS!  It looks a lot like what you ladies are describing your Walmarts look like.  The Target workers are awful, the lines are always 6 people deep and it's like they try to be rude.

Our Walmart is clean, organized, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.  I don't buy clothes at either one unless I am in a pinch and need something right away.  Target clothes are cuter, but they are crappy quality.  I prefer to shop at Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Home Goods if I am looking for home things or cheap clothes.

We live in a very rural area and Walmart is one of the few places to work retail, so that may play into it.  Our Target is near the mall - 30-40 minutes away and they get the bottom of the employee barrel.

  • We no longer live close to a Walmart (we're 20-30 mins, maybe? used to have 3 within 10 mins!) so we go to target. The Targets around here are newly built and much nicer than Walmart as far as the actual building is concerned. I've never bought much for gorceries at either one since they are close to (nicer) local grocery stores.  I think Targets selection is a bit more upscale- as far as brands go. But Walmart is cheaper, so it's a get what you pay for thing.

I go to whichever is closer, but there are definitely "target snobs" around here that WILL NOT go to Walmart. I don't think it's THAT different.

Just to clarify, I think the post you are talking about was regarding Walmart brand products, not the other brands that the store carries. Like, for diaper's and wipes, the People's Choice white and purple boxes. No difference in how the huggies and pampers are made.

  • Target - the store and parking lot is MUCH cleaner. The prices are always accurate (our Walmart has a BIG problem with things not ringing up the same as the shelf tag).  Housewares and clothes are more upscale (I would NEVER buy clothes from Walmart for myself, but do buy things at Target).

Also, there are ALWAYS plenty of registers open at Target. Never have to wait more than 5 mins to checkout.  Unlike Walmart, where you ALWAYS have to wait.

  • The Wal-Mart close to me is not that nice.  Neither are any others in the city really, but the ones in the suburbs are usually nicer/cleaner/better maintained.  I will say that the grocery section is very comparable to any other grocery store here.  The quality is the same, IMO, and they have a better selection.  We also have Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets, which is the grocery store only.  Those are also hit or miss.  Some are icky and some are really nice.  I like shopping at the one by the Y I work at.  It's very clean and nice and I like all the employees there.

I like Target, but again - not close at all.  And there are only 2 Super Targets here, both a solid 30-40 minutes from where I live.  I could hit any number of stores for any product before getting there, so there is no point.  I do like their boys clothing - good quality and nice price.  I'm not big on their clothing for me, but sometimes I get some things.  And sometimes they have things that are way over priced for what it is.  In general, I can spend less and get more at other clothing stores.  But I'd say all of the Targets here are really nice, clean, ect. And again - Wal-Mart is hit or miss.

  • In general I find Target to be nicer. Slighter better brands/not as cheap of stuff (as in cheaply made or will fall apart in the blink of an eye), cleaner/nicer to look at, and you can generally find an employee if you need one. In regards to groceries, I haven't really grocery shopped at a Target so can't really compare. People seem more regular/average then trashy/poor. Not meant to offend anyone with the last thing, that is just my opinion based on the stores I have been in. I've shopped at both but will go to Target if it is closer. If Wal-Mart is closer then I shop there. In the end, I think you'll find some things (if they are the same or very similar) cheaper at Target and some cheaper at Wal-Mart.
  • I also live in a rural area with a high unemployment rate and both stores are a lot better than in the city.  There aren't a lot of job opportunities, so the employees work hard to keep their jobs. They seem to have a better caliber I guess of employees than a bigger city with tons of entry level jobs.  The only thing I hate is that I'm pretty sure my Walmart likes to find the oldest slowest person they have to run the express lane.  But both stores are well maintained, organized, stocked, and clean.

It is horrible, dirty, dimly lit, unorganized, and the people are rude. Target is much cleaner and brighter and the people are friendlier and more helpful.

Before we moved here, we lived in a very small town and Wal-mart was our only option for anything. The nearest grocery store and Target were an hour away. However, the Wal-mart was very big, clean, organized, and the people were nice. I did not mind shopping there at all.

I have no idea if this is true for Jergens, but I have read that Walmart (because they are so big, they can do this) does directly pressure some companies to lower their wholesale prices.  So maybe some products for Walmart are made using cheaper methods?

I am agnostic on this issue.  I pretty much shop at Target exclusively because it's right next to our grocery store and Michael's.  I do know that in Amarillo, TX, the Walmart near where DH's mom lives is VERY nice.

True or false - S. Philly Walmart is HELL ON EARTH?  I will answer my own question with a resounding TRUE TRUE TRUE!

Walmart is creepola.  It's ugly, has bad lighting, terrible selection, etc, etc. Target has such a nice ambiance... I could live there.  I could buy everything I need there.  They have organic food available, great prices, cute clothes, home stuff, etc.  I go through Target withdrawal if I don't go at least once a week.

I don't know about Jergens specifically, but there are many examples (Rubbermaid comes to mind immediately, my FIL used to work for them and said it was horrible).  A Rubbermaid clothes hamper at Target (or anywhere else) would cost you say $20.  The Walmart Rubbermaid one is $14.  They look roughly the same to the blind eye.  But if you hold them up next to each other and REALLY compare them, you will see that the Walmart one isn't made as well as traditional Rubbermaid products.  Why?  Because walmart negotiates with it's suppliers for them to build their products cheaper so Walmart can sell more units, and make more profits.  So after FIL told me that, I never buy anything at Walmart, and I wouldn't be suprised if they have the same kind of deal with Jergens or Tampax or anyone else.

I'm a Target girl, 1000%.  The Walmarts around here are ghetto fabulous and terrible, and my local Target is awesome.  They are about 7 minutes away from each other, but it's a world of difference once you get inside.

  • I don't know how to quote but since my comment caused some confusion I'll clarify.  I think some companies actually make a lower quality version of the same products they sell at other stores specifically for Wal-Mart.  I have read several articles regarding Wal-Mart's practices regarding negotiating with their suppliers that back this up - that they force the supplier to continually lower the price until they are literally unable to  make the same product and still make a profit.  Of course I don't know if this is true but as for my Jergen's example - I've been using that stuff for probably 15 years and the bottle I got from Wal-Mart was definitely different.  That experience coupled with my other issues with Wal-Mart sealed the deal and I haven't been back to a Wal-Mart since.
  • When J and I were traveling in the SW we made a pact to never, ever buy anything from Walmart. It was actually really hard. A lot of places in New Mexico, it was literally the only store in town.

One day when my mom was visiting, I broke my promise and snuck into Walmart to buy a swimsuit. I told J I bought it somewhere else... Embarrassed

A few months later, J confessed that he'd bought a pair of sunglasses there when I wasn't with him. They were really cool, actually.

I try not to shop at either store, even though I do go to Target from time to time. I always end up there after I've moved in to a new house and I need a bunch of random house things.

Whenever Walmart tries to open a store in our town it's met with huge resistance. I hear they are opening a fancy Walmart in the suburbs this year. I admit I'm kinda curious...

  • I guess Walmart US and Walmart Canada are different by a lot....

We don't have Target in Canada yet (it's supposed to be coming in the next couple years) but the store they bought out is kind of like how you say your walmarts are.  Right now it's Zellers and it is not great.  I'll go there, but at pretty much every zellers I've been to it's been how most of you are saying your Walmarts are (minus the rude employees because most I've found are quite nice!).  So if Target is anything like what they bought out, then I won't be frequenting Target.

Walmart is great though!  Next to superstore (which I know you don't have in the states) Walmart is my go to store.

  • This is just my opinion and I don't mean any offense by it at all. Please don't flame me. But, considering the different clientele that usually frequents the two, my main thing that divides them is this: a shower is a prerequisite to going to Target, and a consequence of going to WalMart.

Don't get me wrong, I go to both. But something about WalMart just makes me feel icky. I will never go to WalMart after about 3pm, either.

  • There is a big difference between Target and Walmart, and I hate to tell the OP but a can of corn at Walmart may or may not be the same as a can of corn at Target or a grocery store.  I drive past Walmart to go to Target, and I make it a point to NOT go to Walmart for anything.  I go to the Farmer's Market, local butcher for our meat, and a local grocery for any thing else food related.  I worked at Walmart in my home town just out of high school and they took great advantage of me and others who worked there.  There were many occasions where I didn't get to take a scheduled break, or had to wait until the end of my shift to get my scheduled lunch.  I have since worked in several other retail stores and never had a similar experience.  About 3 or 4 years ago I got a notice in the mail that Walmart was being sued for their illegal practices regarding scheduled breaks and lunches.  Walmart is a horrible workplace and they have incredibly shady business practices.  I hate how in a lot of small towns Walmart has a monopoly on grocery/home goods.  I hate how they drive away the competition.

  • Ehh. I prefer Target for the overall experience, but really I do not buy groceries at either with the exception of yogurt at Wally world, they sell yo baby with the veggies and I can't find it anywhere else. I might pick up coke if it's on sale and I walk by, but mostly I am there for wipes, cleaning supplies, and little crap like birthday cards and storage bins.

I wouldn't buy clothes for myself at either, although Target is better than WM for sure. I definitely wouldn't buy home things at either, as it's all pressed board furniture, and cheap crap. Target stuff "appears" nicer, but for the most part I think it's all junk. Some of the home stuff looks cute, but is overprice IMO for what it is. I would take Home Goods or TJ Maxx any day of the week.

  • I could be wrong, and if I am, I'm truly sorry for spreading misinformation.  However, I've heard multiple times that Walmart will not allow employees to work 40 hours per week so they don't have to provide them with benefits.  These employees often end up using Medicaid or Medicare for health coverage, which in turn takes funds from other programs (like education).  This is why I won't shop at Walmart.

And all the ones I've been in smell kinda funny.... not bad, just weird.

  • Around here, there is a total different class of people that shop at Target vs. those who shop at Walmart.  That may make me sound like a snob, but it's true.  Every time I have ever been in a Walmart, I found it to be dirty, disorganized, the lines ridiculous, the customers trashy and the employees rude and unhelpful.

There is a Target less than 5 minutes from my house and I'm there at least once a week.  Their prices on certain things just cannot be beat and it's convenient that I can pick up everything I need in one place (they added a produce section and expanded the grocery section a couple of years ago).  I love that they will accept both a Target coupon and a manuf. coupon...and they often run specials on items that I buy that you can earn Target gc's for purchasing the items.  Plus, the store is clean, I almost never wait in line and the employees are generally helpful and pleasant.  I like that they donate 5% of their sales to charity.  I also like that you can get their RedCard and save 5% on every purchase.  I have it and leading up to Christmas, I made several trips where I spent $100-150+, so it really added up!

I refuse to step foot in Walmart anymore.

  • This made me think of something funny... Once at our Wal-Mart, I saw a woman checking out with all these little kids and she was yelling at them while eating a rotisserie chicken. I guess she just couldn't wait! She just busted out a chicken leg!  I've never seen anything like that at Target, but if they put one in our town, it'd be possible.
