Our Walmart is clean and well-lit on the inside. The parking lot? Yeah, not so much. Their layout is weird and doesn't make any sense, especially after their last rearranging of everything to move the pharmacy. The employees are s.l.o.w. It takes forever to get checked out, it's ridiculous. And do you see the supervisor trying to fix that? Nope. They just think you'll go to the self-checkout things that suck. And while I don't necessarily blame Walmart for this, I see far more unkempt people there.
Our Target is clean, well-lit (inside and out) and it's an anchor store to our mall (also clean, well-lit and full!). If more than 2 people are in a line they open a new one. Employees act like they want to keep their jobs. Their layout is very organized and makes sense.
I shop at both but will chose Target first every time. I go to our Walmart if I'm looking for someone I know that only they carry (like my coffee mix flavor).
There is no way I could buy all of my grocery needs at Target or Wal-Mart but Wal-Mart has more selection than Target. There are two Wal-Mart stores near my house and one is nice and the other is a little shady (a lot of shoppers from low income areas frequent it) It depends on my mood which I will go to.
Target has cuter softlines (clothing, home goods, etc) but I do love the Garanimals line at Wal-Mart and stock up on solid t's for DS because they are nice quality and only $3.88.
My husband was a manager for Wal-Mart for 13 years and we have several friends who are still. They pay their management very well and compared to other retailers, especially big box stores, they expect the same thing from their managers which includes working long hours and nights and weekends.
My retired dad works part time for Wal-Mart and it is a great job for him. They are very nice to him and have been pretty easy on him when he gets his schedule confused and doesn't show up! He is a bit of a ding bat! He makes decent money, gets a discount and it keeps him busy.
I really haven't noticed much difference in the food quality but I also shop at Trader Joe's and Aldi.
I also can't seem to leave either store without spending at least $100 but at least when I am at Wal-Mart it is mostly on groceries but at Target it is on clothing and stuff for the house I don't need!

Walmart around here is suck-o. I went a couple times in different locations but never again. The stores are dirty and not well laid-out, the merchandise is sub-par, I would never buy actual food from there, and the people (other shoppers and employees) are rude and annoying
Target is the anti-Walmart
True or false - S. Philly Walmart is HELL ON EARTH? I will answer my own question with a resounding TRUE TRUE TRUE!
Walmart is creepola. It's ugly, has bad lighting, terrible selection, etc, etc. Target has such a nice ambiance... I could live there. I could buy everything I need there. They have organic food available, great prices, cute clothes, home stuff, etc. I go through Target withdrawal if I don't go at least once a week.
I actually vomit thinking about the South Philly Walmart.
I want to vomit thinking about the cesspool that is the S. Philly Walmart. That place should be blown up. I think I would rather have Foxwoods Casino there than that hellhole of a WM
ETA - my sister calls that whole shopping center "Hell's Triangle" because of the WM, the Superfresh and the Home Depot
