Request a C-Section?

I know this may sound crazy to some...but I think I would actually prefer a c-section.  Can this be done?  Or does it depend on the doctor?

My sister had blood pressure problems with her first so she had to have one...and I had blood pressure problems pre-pregnancy (amazingly the problems have vanished since I've been pregnant, knock on wood).

I just think it would be much easier.  I have a high tolerence for pain, so the stitches are not a problem.

*Edit*  My full response (also posted as my second reply)

As I skimmed more through these responses I think I have some more explaining to do.  I have a bad habit of not giving all the info.

Ok, so I didn't realize the pain was that bad, and those last couple sentences sounded really bad.  I did not mean for it to sound so cold and niave.  I did not realize the risks.  I apologize for that.  As I said above, I thought it was a common procedure...thought, ok, if this is so common then I will schedule this birth, have the baby, and deal without the labor.  I admit, I was and still am scared to give birth.  I'm only human.

I also want to point out that there is more to my health problems than my blood pressure.  I have an autonomic disorder (Dysautonomia) that causes my body to react different than a normal persons.  My body doesn't regulate temperature very well, I have GI issues, and my blood pressure is always out of wack...just to name a few.  A signature symptom of this disorder is passing out.  Earlier I mentioned my sister's case because if she had to go through this, then I would think I would be a candidate.  Willingly, or not.  I do not have a doctor's appointment until tomorrow.  I will not request a c-section...but I will discuss this with them.

Again, I'm sorry I caused an uproar.  I'm sorry to say, but I didn't really realize what all a c-section entailed.

*....And with that being said...I'm going to leave now.  I realize I am not welcome here.  All you guys had to say is, "Do you realize the consequences?"  "Have you done your research?"  and give your own experiences.  I realize what I said came off pretty harsh, but we are suppose to be here for each other...

Thanks to those who had nice responses.  Your responses have opened my eyes a lot.  Now I pray I get to have a vaginal birth, if my health allows.

Re: Request a C-Section?

  • i do not understand what the hell you are asking?  you have no BP problems currently, but are anticipating them?  You have a high tolerance for pain, but think a c-section will be easier/less painful??   It's major abdominal surgery,so i hope your Dr sees that you are crazy.

  • I personally think it is selfish and dumb but there are a few docs that will do elective cs but I wouldnt trust a doc that would allow this.  Also, your insurance may not pay for a major surgery if there is no medical reasonig behind it so your doc would have to make up a reason (which is unethical in the medical field) to tell the insurance why they did it.
  • Wow! Did YOU just open up a can of worms!

So, you want an elective c-section because you *think* it would be easier and maybe better but have not consulted a doctor nor weighed all the MAJOR risks/complications and otherwise?

I would highly, highly, highly suggest you consult a doctor, then some books, then another doctor and then really spend some time thinking. You do realize they take out your internal organs and put them back in during a c-section, right?

But hey, why not get a tummy tuck while you are there...

  • I would not recommend a c-section unless it's medically necessary.  I had to have one and have recently found out that I'm not a candidate for VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section) and am devastated.  People tend to minimize the risks associated with a c.  It's a major abdominal surgery at the same time as giving birth.  Any major surgery is a big thing for your body to handle, and having one in conjunction with childbirth adds more risk.  While I am thankful they were able to give me a c-section and it was the only way to deliver my daughter safely, I am still very sad about it.  I would think carefully about it before deciding on major surgery unless it's medically necessary.

  • Insurance companies don't pay for elective c-sections.  I see where you're coming from though.....after about 20hrs of labor with my 1st, I was BEGGING for a c-section.  I think a lot of doctors would have caved (I screamed at my OB "if you can't manage my pain, you're going to have to come up with another plan to get this baby out of me").  In the end, I'm glad she didn't.

My 2nd was breech until about 37wks.  I was hoping she'd stay that way so I could have the section.  Nope.  She flipped.  While I was in labor with her I was telling everyone how I was jealous of my friend who "gets to have a c-section".  Granted, the reason she's having it is because her 1st DS almost died and then SHE almost died.  Her scar tissue is so bad, she couldn't VBAC like she wanted.  Yet, I found myself jealous of her getting a c-section.

Again, I was happy I didn't need one.  But, I'm going through the same feelings.....like it would be "easier" somehow.  Doubtful.

I guess if you wanted to pay for it, it's your right to ask your doctor for it.  Or, you could just hope for a reason to need one so insurance will pay.

ETA:  That last part was sarcastic.....

  • There are lots of women who request them... and I have one word for those women- LAZY!!!!

    K, I'm done now.

  • My Dr only let me schedule my c section because I am getting a tummy tuck and a boob job at the same time as the birth, and I don't want a stretched out vag.  Also I am working around my filming schedule.  So your Dr may allow it.

  • Can open. Worms everywhere.

You want to elect for a major surgery when you have no current risk factors suggesting you need it? A c-section can have weeks of recovery. it's a major surgery where they CUT INTO YOUR MUSCLE.

Take a deep breath. Women have childbirth vaginally every single day. I had high BP with my DD and I still had a vaginal birth. And it was perfectly fine. No complications.

    ?

Why do you think it would be easier? And that it's 'easier' is your reason for wanting an elective c-section? Um, wow.

I'll do whatever I need to to deliver this baby...if I have to have a c-section because my physician deems it medically necessary, I will, but only if it's absolutely necessary. There's absolutely no way that I would consider an elective c-section over a vaginal birth.??

  • I will say - when I was first pregnant, the thought of labor was TERRIFYING.  The concept of a C-section as a "just wake me when it's over" ordeal was definitely appealing.

That being said, as I get closer to actually bringing this kid into the light of day, labor doesn't sound as bad.  You've got a LONG time to get used to the idea of everything involved in childbirth.  Some doctors will grant a truly elective C-section, but most reasonable ones will explain that the difficulties in natural birth are much preferable to the major surgery.

  • You do not want a C-Section. Believe it when Dr.'s say the recovery period is longer. It was almost 6 weeks before I could lift anything or stand properly. For the first week I couldn't even get into bed by myself. And then on top of that you have 15 + staples in your pelvis which is not very pleasant either. C-Sections are no walk in the park though you might think they are.

  • You think it will be easier to have major abdominal surgery?  If your tolerance for pain is so high, then giving birth vaginally should be a walk in the park, right? Because let me tell you, if you think having your muscle cut and sewn back together won't feel so bad because you have a high tolerance for pain, then you have got another thing coming.
  • You do this and you're a dumbass. First of all, you do realize this is major surgery? Meaning they will be slicing through your abdominal wall and into a major organ? And you could bleed to death or lose your uterus? Oh, and after healing, your muscles might prolapse. And that complication pales in comparison to infection and all that. You're effing stupid.

You seriously think that a C-Section would be easier than a regular birth?  Perhaps for the birth part, but think of the recovery.  If you have back problems, you have consider what it would mean for your abs to be cut - you cant use those as well, and therefore have to rely on your back..

    This is ridiculous and selfish

  • What about the risk that comes with having a c-section vs vag birth? Yes, in case you have not heard there is a higher risk of death for those who have a c-section so why you would want to get one just so its easier and not medically needed is crazy.

  • If you have a high tolerance for pain, why not just through labor?  Remember you are not your sister- you may not develop any issues.

Honestly I think it's nuts to WANT someone to slice you open when the baby has a ready made exit... It's not just stitches... they cut your skin, fat, muscle, and uterus.  They have to staple you closed.  You risk adhesions, infection, bleeding... it's major abdominal surgery.

And those who mention the insurance, that is a good point- surgical deliveries are much more expensive and if elective, may not be covered... do you have the extra $10-20K to pay for that?

    NO THANKS!

  • Speaking as someone who has had two major abdominal surgeries as well as gave birth vaginally - I would give birth a hundred times before wanting a c/s... Okay, maybe not a hundred times, but you get the point.

Why on earth would you think it would be easier?

  • You may have high pain tolerance (in that case, why aren't you going natural) but do you have high resistence for surgery related infections that can (and commonly do) occur?  Are you looking forward to not being able to get up and walk around with your baby if its fussy that day?  You want to deny your baby the biological/chemical benefits of experiencing labor which include improved immunity?

My thoughts exactly. If you have such a high tolerance for pain, then go for the natural birth - vaginally with no meds at all.

  • Eyes are rolling behind my head.

A c-section is a major surgery... most Dr's will not perform an elective C-section, if you haven't had one before.

Mom of 3 year old, one year old and one on the way (due late Summer 2013).
  • My cousin, who is in phenomenal physical shape, and very high tolerance for pain, had a 48 hour labor, followed by an emergency c-section (ultimately, the baby would never be delivered vaginally, because his cord was only 13 cm long).

As she was recovering from her childbirth, she said that she prefered the feeling of the contractions to recovering from the c/s.  At least the contractions started & stopped, but her incision was CONSTANTLY in pain - not discomfort, pain.

  • Whatevs, I'm having the guys from Dr. 90210 do my c-section.  They're not OBs, but I want my incision scars to be PRETTY.
  • There are lots of reasons why babies are supposed to be born naturally!

Oh totally, who wouldn't want to have several stitches inside their bodies, and staples across the outside over having a couple stitches on their taint? Cavewomen, probably.

  • Wow.  Flame central.  It isn't crazy to think you might prefer a c-sec, heck a majority of celebrities have had one.  Many people think that they would prefer a scheduled c-sec, but when you do the research regarding what is involved, you may change your mind.  It isn't really the stitches, it is the fact that they slice you open and pull out your organs (including your ab muscles, which sucks).  C-section may sound easier, but it has its own drawbacks too.  Most doctors won't do them (or insurance companies pay) unless they are medically necessary.  Good luck to you.  Sorry for the flames, you are entitled to your thoughts.  GL!

I have news for you: If you slice through the abdominal wall (you know, the CORE muscles), your back muscles will be forced to take over to keep you standing vertical.  Think that doesn't hurt your back more?  Think again, sweetheart.

  • Here's a vid by the Mayo Clinic showing a c-section being performed. Just a bit of education - you can make your own decision about it, but seriously read up on the procedure and weigh out your options.

Wait till you're not feeling pukey or eating when you watch it.
