storing milk at work then taking to daycare question

First day back to work today- I took her 6 4 ounce bags that I had pumped yesterday and today when I pumped at work I started to dump all my milk into a 32 oz rubbermaid jug. I chilled the milk first before adding it to the jug. Is this okay to do? I am assuming so since I wasn't adding warm milk to cold milk. I took it to daycare after work and she said she had never done it that way but whatever works is fine. So tomorrrow should she just dump the milk into the bottle then warm it up and then discard any leftover? What about at the end of the day when there is milk left over? Just keep it for the following day? I am taking some storage bags for her to bag the rest at the end of the day and put in the freezer. Have any of you done it this way? What works and what doesn't? I just think that taking a big "jug of milk" is pretty easy but it seemed strange to her. Thanks!

Re: storing milk at work then taking to daycare question

  • Here's what I do, and the only way I know of:

I pump into the bottles he'll drink from - I pump 4 5oz bottles a day.  I store them in the cooler bag that came with my Medela pump until I get home, when I put them in the fridge for later use.

I send 3 bottles to daycare (he usually drinks 2 of them) in a cooler bag that I bought separately, with other ice packs to keep them cold on the ride in (30 min commute) then they go into the fridge at daycare until she heats up a mug of water and sets the bottle in it to warm up the milk (and melt the fat), and puts on a nipple for DS.  The 3rd bottle usually comes back home to be used by DH before I come home from work or to be labeled to use first the next morning at daycare.

If I notice that I'll have too much for one week, I will transfer a bottle (or a few) to a bag (or bags) and freeze.

The drawback I see with putting it in one big jug is: how do you get the fat mixed in when you transfer to a manageable sized bottle for LO to drink from?

  • Loading the player...
  • We have to take bottles all made up and ready to go.  I am not sure I would want someone else responsible for freezing my milk etc.  When I do it I know it is done right and hands are washed etc,  We have to date our bottles each day too.
  • I do  your "jug" method.  i thought it would be easier for me than pre-making bottles every morning.  And it is...but it lets my babysitters (MIL and family friend) decide how much to give her.  They keep upping my bottle amounts, even though I ask them not to.

Anyway, she'll go through 3 bottles a day.  They just give me the jug back at the end of the day so I can take  what's left to the other sitter the next day.  I don't have them freeze any excess...I try to  use fresh whenever possible, and it's nice to have a few extra ounces some days if I don't pump as much.  Hope that helps!

  • I did that with my son but I feel like they gave him more than he needed most times. They were used to formula babies where they had to up the amount they gave. He was drinking 8oz bottles and spitting up a lot.

For my daughter we're at a new daycare and they want the bottles ready-made. I make four 4oz bottles each day and she rarely spits. It's so different than my son was. At first I felt like it was quite a headache, but I've found that I like it better.

When I pump I pump into 9oz bottles that I bought when I thought she'd need them. I pump straight into those, put them in a neoprene (sp?) cooler bag and bring them home. As soon as I get home I put them into 4oz bottles and put them in the fridge for the week. It's nice to just open the door and have the bottles ready to go in the morning.

If it works for you, great. I, personally, like having a little more control over making sure she's getting the freshest possible and none of it is accidentally sitting in the fridge for several days.

I just rambled. Did that help at all? Probably not. Sorry! :-)

  • I am happy to see these responses - since I've returned to work this week & I am a FTM. Yesterday was LO's first day at daycare & the teacher gave her a 3oz bottle at 10:30, then 3 oz at 2:30 and then 6 oz at 3:45! WTF???? Today I gave her 4, 4oz bags & asked her to feed LO 4 times and feed her more often during the day...I think the jug idea would lead to mega issues and too large of bottles
