Working Moms

need help-re: au pair, nanny, daycare thoughts...

I'm due with our 3rd in may. DH and I currently are paying 2000/month in preschool bills for our girls (2.5 and 4), and 1200 in rent (2 bd, 1ba,  tiny apt in boston).  We're very quickly outgrowing our apartment and are in desperate need of a second bathroom (why, oh why, does dh have to sit in there and read SI/novels/economist? isnt the couch comfier?!). We're looking at  taking the girls out of preschool and having them with the new baby somewhere either at an in-home daycare or a live-out nanny. We're anticipating these costs to be probably more than 2500/month (meaning at least 3700/month in daycare/rent)

With that amount of money spent on daycare costs... would you consider buying (or renting could work, I suppose) a MUCH bigger place and getting a live-in or an au pair?

  • I think the live in aspect will make your life easier but I think you have to consider that your 2.5 and 4 year old are going to have to go to preschool even if you have an au pair so you need to consider the combined cost.  We have 3 and are considering an au pair but we are going to have to pay $400 a month for our son to do full day kindergarten and we work too many hours to do 5 days a week for the baby (au pairs can work only 45 hours and we are out of the house from 8-6 most days) so it will probably cost us something like $500-$700 a month for the baby as well.  So overall we will end up spending an equal amount on either - but the convenience of having someone in your house who can do some laundry, cook for the kids, etc is definitely a positive to think about.

  • Speaking from experience ( I was a nanny till the children got older and no longer needed me) and from what my sister in law is doing now, you could get a live in or out nanny or do a nanny share. Most nannies for live out or even live in can work as many hours as you want. I worked 50 hours a week anything over that I was paid a little extra. Since I also did the cooking that was food for me and when I did laundry after I did theirs I could do my own. If you add these little things in you could actually reduce the payment for these " benefits". I mainly was paid 400 a week up to 500. Now, I was also there when the parents were too and you could always say that is the nannies free time and don't have to pay as much. For a nanny share you share the cost with another family who has their children watched. This costs between 16-20 an hour so 8-10 per family. This would be more salaried based and would include days off, vacation and possibly health benefits depending on your budget. Feel free to PM me if you would like more information. Sorry for the long paragraphs that blended together I'm on the iPad and it won't separate....

  • good point- dd has another year and a half before kindergarten (she missed the cut-off by a few weeks). we would like to keep her in preschool for at least a few mornings a week to get some socialization/preparedness.
