Natural Birth

Measuring ahead means what exactly?

With my first pregnancy I was consistently measuring 2 weeks ahead by measuring my belly.  With this pregnancy I have had many more ultrasounds because of his birth defect and on a bunch of different machines.  Each machine measures me about 2-3 weeks ahead of my March 14 EDD.  Does that mean that they are measuring the size of the baby and based on his estimated weight they are telling me that I'm measuring ahead?

My daughter was born at 39 weeks via scheduled c-section and was 8lbs 12oz.  I'm expecting him to be big, but I also believe my body will not make a baby that I can't push out...I also realize those estimated weights can be a crock of crap.  My daughter was supposedly over 10lbs.

  • Agree with PP - they are taking measurements and comparing to other babies at that gestation.  I measured ahead with my son but knew my due date was right - he was born at 41 weeks at just under 10 lbs.  I am measuring almost 2 weeks ahead with this one too but told the docs that it is just a big baby as I was charting and using OPKs so I know the week I conceived.  But it is my understanding that these can be off by a significant margin of error either way.

  • They haven't changed my due date. I assume because the early dating u/s is the most accurate, but I haven't asked because I don't want him to change my due date. The last u/s tech said "wow, he's got a huuuuuuge head." That made the hair on my neck stand up a little, but I'm still going to push this kid out.

    What a jackass.

You can do it!  Your body know exactly what size your baby should be. :)

  • I agree that your body will not produce a baby bigger than your body will push out. I know that there are some circumstances where there is pelvic issues, but real cases of that are very rare. My DS was measuring 2 weeks ahead for most of the time - it all comes down to where the amniotic fluid is sitting. If your baby has fluid behind it's back, for instance, you'll be bigger in front.

And pay no attention to the ultrasound tech - they are taught to read the images, not to interpret the results.

And just FYI - all of my ultrasounds measured my baby to be huge. He was supposed to have a huge head too. The doc pressured me A LOT to have an induction because she thought he would be a 11-12 lb. baby. I flat out refused. My 8 lb. 13 oz. baby was perfect :)

  • My LMP and all but the 1st u/s had me farther along (due Nov 30-Dec 3rd). The first u/s was the outlier that had me due December 10th. Usually the first ultrasounds are the most accurate but in my case the other 4 + LMP over ruled the first ultrasound.

If you are seeking an out of hospital birth I'd tell you to ask your practitioner about the due date discrepancy. I almost missed out on my birth center birth because we were still going by the December 10th due date. Luckily on my 4th trip in for "preterm labor" I whined something about wanting my old due date back and the MWs scrutinized my file and found the discrepancies.
