High-Risk Pregnancy

Dx'd with GD but no guidelines... help!

I'm almost 32 weeks, and just got diagnosed with GD.  My OB's office just seemed to move really slow over the whole process, and now I'm stuck waiting even longer to get help or direction from them.  My OB referred me to a specialist, but her office is closed and I can't even talk to them to make an appointment until Monday.  I have gotten no info on what I'm supposed to be eating or doing other than "watch your carbs."

I'm trying to do research online, but I'm finding it confusing.  Some places say to count total carbs, some say to subtract fiber, some say subtract half the fiber.... I'm completely confused.

I feel terrible that my body is doing something that could hurt the baby, and then on top of it I haven't gotten any advise at all from my doctor(s) yet.  I'm trying not to freak out, but between the stress, the bad news, the pregnancy hormones and obligatory family drama caused by the holidays, I'm having a really hard time keeping calm about this.

So, what do you guys with GD do?  How do you count carbs/ organize your meals?  I've never been the healthiest eater in the world, but I'm not the worst either.  I eat a lot of fresh fruit and dairy products, I don't eat too many fatty foods like chips and fried stuff, but I am finding it really hard not to eat cookies or icecream at night.  I found some no sugar popsicles that are yummy, and no sugar jello is working out.  I tried using stevia in my coffee this morning, but I have never really eaten artificial sweeteners, and it was so gross I had to throw out the whole cup. :(

Help me, please...

  • I know what you're going through- I felt so lost after I got Dx'd but had to wait a week for any guidance. I thought I might starve myself whilst waiting.

As it turns out, the diet they put you on will be pretty personalized to you in terms of how many carbs you can have. What seems relatively universal guidance is that you should space out the carbs into 3 meals and 3 snacks throughout the day, with 2 hours at least between each.

FWIW here's what my plan looks like, but these numbers might be different for you. It was much more carbs than I was letting myself eat during my week of uncertainty:

Breakfast- 30g carbohydrates and whatever else non-carb I want

Snack- 30g carbohydrates and whatever else non-carb I want

Lunch- 45g carbohydrates and whatever else non-carb I want

Snack- 30g carbohydrates and whatever else non-carb I want

Dinner- 45g carbohydrates and whatever else non-carb I want

Snack- 30g carbohydrates and at least 1oz of protein

ETA: I can subtract out the full fiber count

  • Try to balance your meals with carbs, protein and fats. I am allowed the following:

     Breakfast 20 carbs

    Snack 15 carbs

    Lunch 50 carbs

    Snack 15 carbs

    Dinner 50 carbs

    Snack 20 carbs

I tend to go with eggs and toast with coffee for breakfast. For my snacks I like fruit with cheese or peanut butter, a protein bar or bread with peanut butter. Lunch I will do a wrap with vegies, cheese and meat, a sandwich etc. and then dinner I try to eat some meat with vegies and either a roll or potatoes etc. GL I know the waiting is super hard!

  •   All I can add to the other posts is stay away from french fries, cakes, pies and chocolate for sure. My dietician also said pizza usually spikes your blood sugar and so does any kind of chinese food.  Pretty much all the yumminess!! Just don't stress yourself out too much. I had to wait over a week  to see my specialist and I just ate like normal and when I went in my sugars were good and my little guy was average size. Good luck!!
  • I would say not to go too crazy with counting carbs until you know what to count to for each meal. Basically, moderation can help and a serving size of carbs is 15g.

Beware of some fruit since it can spike you just as much as cookies for some ladies, and 1c milk is counted as a carb. Cheeses are pretty good all around, from what I've seen (just commenting on those since you mentioned fruit and dairy products).

Its frustrating not getting answers right away, but a few days of no guidance will not cause TOO much harm as long as you don't spend those few days eating only cookies, cake and bread.

For the holidays, go light on the starches (potatoes both sweet and white, rice, pasta, bread, etc), stick to whole wheat where you can. Load up on veggies as long as they are not drenched in sauce, and protein is a must with meals. I read on a diabetes site for dessert that you should take at most 1/2 of what you normally would, eat slowly, and try to leave some left behind on your plate.

Hope some of this can help get you through to Monday! Good luck!

I will say that things like cake, fries, and chocolate have been fine with me. I usually struggle after eating a lot of bread.

Same here - my sugar goes way higher after eating 1/2 piece of toast w/ peanut butter than it does after a piece of cake.  Very weird.
