My LO is 12 weeks and I haven't taken her temp yet. I took out the Vicks Rectal themometer to read the directions to be prepared. It states not to use pertrolem jelly, rather a water based lubricant. Any suggestions? Because the only thing I could think of was KY. That just seems wrong. Lol. TIA.
Re: Vicks Rectal Thermometer question
This is for all the caterpillars that never became butterflies. And for all the butterflies that never felt the wind in their wings. And for all the hearts that had hopes and dreams of a wondrous flight together.
KY, Astroglide, any water based lube will do. Vasaline and other petrolium or silicone based products aren't recommended because over time they can break down the silicone coating of the thermometer. The purpose of the lube is to allow for easier insertion of the thermometer and helps make taking the temp more comfortable for the baby.
A word of caution, keep a diaper under the baby, and if it's a boy, keep his penis covered while you take the temp. Sometimes the stimulation of the thermometer will cause the baby to have a bowel movement and the cold air can cause little boys to urinate. I worked as a ped medical assistant and took many rectal temps. I can proudly say that I was never pooped or peed on because I was always extremely careful (I was only vomited on once and that was by a child who was there for a well baby exam-needless to say the mom was very suprised and apologetic).

Thanks everyone. I bought some generic KY at Target yesterday
Oh and she pees sometimes when I change her diapers anyway, so why would taking her temp be any different? lol. I have improved my diaper changing times dramatically!
