This is why you shouldn't drink while pregnant...

If you don't wanna click the link, long story short is an 18 year old here in nz was drinking (she only had two apparently, but with our drinking culture here and her age, I seriously doubt it was only two, and if it was, it was probably a 50/50 mix!) at her birthday party. She was 27wks pg, and gave birth to her child the next day....

Seriously, there was probably more than that as a contributing factor though!

  • I saw this story tonight and I was in tears reading it. Stories like this make me so sad and angry.

  • It seems to say that she was drinking regularly throughout the pregnancy since she says didn't know she was pregnant until 3 weeks prior to giving birth. Although, given that she continued to admit to having a couple post-knowledge too... yeesh.

  • I find it hard to believe that having two drinks in the second trimester is enough to put you in labor. Like you said, I'm sure it was either a pattern of heavy drinking that wasn't mentioned  or other circumstances.

  • She totally admits to drinking throughout the pregnancy:

Hape said she had consumed alcohol on other occasions but only because she didn't realise she was pregnant.

"Until one or two weeks ago I didn't even know I was pregnant, it was a shock," Hape said.

So, given that she was drinking before she knew she was pregnant (and she only figured that out a couple of weeks before giving birth), it was probably the culmination of all that booze that caused the early labour... because I agree, two drinks seem totally unlikely to cause early labour. There was a study released last year that said light drinking (fewer than 1 drink a week) didn't result in any increased risk for the child. There are issues with that study too, but I know my doctor said the occasional glass of wine was fine.
