Still no weight gain, should I be concerned?

I am not sure how worried I should be. I am almost 17 weeks and have not gained anything from this pregnancy. I have actually lost 4 lbs and that is with no morning sickness. Doctor likes to see 10 lbs gain by 20 weeks. Is it possible to not gain a thing by 20 weeks and the baby is still fine?

On a side note, he did feel for where my uterus is and said it is right where it should be so that baby is growing. I am 5'8" and 168lbs so about 10lbs overweight for my height.

  • I also have not gained any weight at my appt at 18 weeks due to M/S.  If your Dr isn't concerned then you shouldnt' be the baby is getting what it needs from you.

  • I'm still down 9 lbs from my 1st appointment. M/s is kicking my butt (instead of everyday I'm down to about 3 times a week). Doctor isn't concerned because I am overweight as it is and baby is growing (6oz) and moving like crazy! I haven't really 'popped' either.

  • Last time I went to the dr, I had lost 5 lbs and she was not concerned. I guess the baby is growing okay and getting what it needs. I weighed myself yesterday and I still havent gained....as long as my baby is okay, it is fineeee with me not to be gaining!

  • I would be happy I think if I *knew* baby was fine. The doctor just checks for heartbeat & feels for where the uterus is so I don't get to see baby on ultrasound. I have not had any morning sickness either like a few of you so I wish I could use that excuse at this point haha.
  • I have still only lost weight and my doctor said it's fine.

  • I wouldn't be to worried yet as long as the OB isn't.  I haven't gained anything, lost about 20 since pregnant.  Mine is more due to very strict diet due to diabetes.  Was told by my OB that will have to eventually start gaining, but for know just keep doing what am doing.

  • I'm 5'7" and at my last appointment I had lost 8 pounds. 18 weeks tomorrow.

It's not a big deal so far, but my midwife really wants to see me gain weight at my next appointment. I'm a little nervous because I don't think I've gained any and my appointment is 9 days away. BUT I know that things are growing fine and I'm eating enough, so I'm really more worried about being reprimanded.

  • I wouldn't be concerned. I have not gained any weight either and I am 19 weeks. My doc said it is not uncommon for women not to gain weight until the 20th week. Two of my friends were the same way with their pregnancies, so that made me feel better, too.

  • I did not gain any weight until 18 weeks, I have now gained 3 lbs during the 19 weeks of pregnancy.

    The weight will come eventually.

If you are overweight to begin with, you should only be aiming to gain 15-20lbs with pregnancy... so no weight gain at this point is perfectly fine.  Any woman who has gained 10lbs at 18 weeks and then gains 1lb/week for the rest of their pregnancy will be up 32lbs at the end - near the *high* end of the recommended 25-35lb weight gain for women with a normal BMI at the start of pregnancy.  So it's better to have not gained much now, as long as you are eating when you are hungry and taking your vitamins - baby will get what it needs.

THIS.  Rule of thumb, if your dr isn't worried, don't be worried. Yes

This is not exactly right...  you have to be more than a little overweight to fall into the category where you are supposed to gain less.

  • With my first pregnancy I did not gain any weight until 20 weeks and after.  This pregnancy I did not gain any weight as of my appt on friday.  I wouldn't be worried about it, the weight will come.
