Trouble TTC

Gimme your best heavy app ideas, please

I'm hosting a jewelry party on Thursday, and I realized that it's at 6:30 and many people will be coming from work so I figure I need some substantial appetizers to keep people from going hungry.

Any one have any ideas from some easy, yet filling apps that don't take too much time to prep the day of (I'm fine with getting stuff situated the night before)?

  • Mini meatballs in the crock pot.  I use the recipe that calls for grape jelly, chili sauce, lemon juice and meatballs.

  • How about bbq meatballs, or sweet and sour meatballs in the crockpot? I love those, and the mini hotdogs in a blanket!
  • got a couple of ideas. first one is a piggie in a blanket in a shape of a wreath

Other idea is a greek dip that you serve with warm pitas

  • I don't know if your opposed to pre-made trays but you can always have Subway sandwich trays or Chick-fil-A trays. We always do the meatballs as mentioned above for get togethers. I also saw a recipe on Pinterest the other day to make your own pizza rolls with crescent rolls filled with pizza sauce, cheese and pepperoni.

  • Buy wonton wrappers and bake them in mini cupcake pans to make them into little cups. We put a dab of oil on them to help them crisp up. Once cooled spoon chicken salad into them. They are delicious!!

We also like to brown spicy sausage, drain. Melt velveeta into it. Spoon over those mini-pumpernickel toasts and bake until browned and bubbly.

    Veggie Pizza is always good.

My mom used to make sloppy joe biscuits-- make bisquick dough and spoon into cupcake pan, add sloppy joes only to the middle, sprinkle with cheese and bake until dough is done.

I have tons of other app recipes, if you need more let me know :)

  • Little sandwiches on dollar rolls can easily be made ahead of time.

For dessert, you can always bake some cookies.  Have you ever had the chocolate chip cheese ball?  It's divine and can be made ahead :)  https://allrecipes.com/recipe/chocolate-chip-cheese-ball/

  • Hot spinach and artichoke dip or the spinach dip in a bread bowl - both of those could be made the night before.  Maybe you can do a few cold pasta/orzo salads that people can fill up on.  Stuffed breads are heavy, too, although I've never made them, we usually buy them and heat it up right before the party.

  • I always do a baked dip like bacon and leak and pair it with toasted pita chips. Baked brie in puff pastry with a nice jam or compote on top is easy and filling. Crostinis always seem to go well such as bruschetta or olive tapenade spread on top. My favorite for any event is prosciutto wrapped melon.

  • The previously suggested meatballs in a crockpot is super easy.  I make them with store bought frozen meatballs and one bottle of italian dressing.  They get eated up at every work potluck.  Another that you can make the night before is saugage stuff muchroom caps.  Pull the stem of of muchrooms and fill the hole with ground spicy ground sausage. Dab Wirstershire sauce on each one. Bake at  350 until done, ussually about 20 min. Can be prepped and refridgerated the night before. Enjoy your jewelry party!

He really is . . . . although not nearly that little anymore :P Still its one of my favorite pics of him

I also thought of shrimp with cocktail sauce. Everyone always seems to love that and if you wanted to make it look fancy you can do something like take a nice piece of glassware ( I have a giant martini glass) fill it with crushed ice and then rim the edge of the glass with the shrimp or decoratively laid inside the container.

  • Bacon wrapped dates. Super easy (and they were a big hit when I served them at my jewelry party!)

Ingredients: dates, bacon, cheese (I used manchego, my sister made them with goat cheese, I've also had them with blue cheese).

Cut open the date, pull out the pit, put in the cheese.

Cut the bacon slices in thirds. Wrap one slice around the date, secure with tooth picks. You could do this the night before, then stick them in the fridge.

Day of, bake them on a wire rack set in a cookie sheet at 350 until crisp (20-30 minutes). You can also brush them with a bit of balsamic vinegar for a little extra something.

  • ::coming out of lurking::

The one I like to make (and now HAVE to make) for every party is Artichoke Feta Dip. Super easy to throw together the night before, leave in the fridge and pop in the over about an hour before.

1 can drained artichoke hearts - 8 oz feta - 1/2 c. parmesan cheese - 1 c. mayo - whatever seasoning you like...I prefer garlic powder, crushed red paper and ground black pepper, but definitely no salt.

Just mix it together so it covers the bottom of a baking dish and bake at about 350 until brown. It's best served with pita chips :) Good luck!

This is what I was going to suggest!! It is one of my fav apps to make :) Also, you could make mini sandwiches (like the ones served during tea), bruschetta https://www.instructables.com/id/Bruschetta-Recipe/ , veggie tray with different dips. Suggestions from PPs are great as well!!

  • Buffalo Chicken dip in the crock pot.

My teammate made this dip and it was really good:

    1 tub of sour cream

    1 packet Ranch Mix

    1 cup cheese

1/2 bacon bits.  Mix up and serve

  • Ditto the grape jelly/heinz chili sauce meatballs in the crockpot.

Also miniature meatloaves can be prepped and put in a muffin pan the night before.  If you're feeling extra festive you can always pipe mashed potatoes on top after they're done.

I love to do smoked sausage pigs in a blanket using honey butter biscuits.

  • Potato skins are always a hit and they are easy! Cut potatoes in half add cheese and bacon bits and bake!
