Any baby gates for stairs that don't require holes in the wall?

Our stairs are up against a wall so one side is wall and the other is a metal rail. We're in a rental house and don't want to damage the walls or rail. We've looked at several gates but can't seem to find one that can work. Right now we don't have a gate for the bottom of the stairs and just quarantine the boys to the living room, but I'm kind of tired of it.

  • You can get the kind that has a tension type bar that you wedge between the two walls and then push it down to hold tight. However, I would never want to use that at the top of the stairs, because if you push on it, it gives.  If the boys were trying to or were wrestling around and fell into it, it might fall over and they'd tumble down.

  • I'd go with the one that attaches to the wall. It's so easy to get a little spackle and patch small drill holes. It's better to be safe then sorry. I highly recommend the North Star Stairway Swing gate. I have three! One at the top of the stairs, one at the bottom and one to block off another room.

We tried one tension one but the rail wasn't strong enough to support it. (It's not a wobbly rail or anything, but just wasn't solid enough and would bend to the outside.)

  • There are some we got at babies r us. They sort of zip tie (not exactly a zip tie, way more sturdy, but the best comparison I can make) onto your banister and they're a gate, so you don't have to hassle with the tension gate, we did for a day and said forget it. We were ready to drill into our banisters (we don't have walls by our stairs, top or bottom) but found those bad boys! GL

  • Yes. We bought one at Walmart super cheap and my parents bought a more expensive one from Babies R Us. The funny thing is the Walmart one works so much better! Here is the link, it even has a door so you don't need to climb over it.

It is also very sturdy. It is at the bottom of our stairs and there have been times when my son decides to stand on the bottom of it and shake it (obviously we do discourage this in the end) but it has never fallen. It is even very hard for me to push it away from the wall when I try to test it. I am usually unsuccessful at pushing it down myself.
