Trying to Get Pregnant

Cart Before Horse: Grandparent Names

While DH and I were at my Dad's house for Thanksgiving, my Dad brought up the subject of Grandchildren as he always does. He is adorably excited...and keeps hinting at the fact that he can't wait to have them. (I'm working on it!) Haha.

Anyway...he started talking about what he wants to be called when he has Grandkids. My Dad wants to be called "Pappy" and my Step-Mom (his wife) said she likes "Mimi".

Obviously this isn't even a worry yet, but it got me thinking about all the various names for grandparents out there.

So...have your parents shared with you what they'd like to be called? If you already have kids, what do they call your parents? What do you call your grandparents?

My family is very Italian, so we grew up calling my grandmother Nonne and my grandfather Papa (on my Dad's side) and on my Mom's side it was simply Grandma and Grandpa.

Hope you're all enjoying your Saturday!

  • My parents don't have any grandchild and won't until we ahve them (I'm a only child).  They've both mentioned they like/want "Grandma" and "Grandpa"

My MIL and FIL already have 3 grandkids and are called PawPaw and Gammaw

  • On my ILs side the are just grandma and grandpa. My dad is Bop to my niece cause she couldn't say Pop and it stuck. My mom is GJ for Grandma J.

My parents don't have grandchildren yet either :) I'm not an only child...but I am the oldest and only one married (not saying that constitutes the only reason to have a child) but my sisters are younger than me, not married, and obviously aren't TTC!

Your parents will be so excited when you give them news of a pregnancy! My fingers, toes, and everything else that can be crossed are crossed for your next cycle! :)

  • My niece already calls my mom "Grandma", so that's what she'll be. For my in-laws, my MIL wants "Meme". (I personally really dislike that spelling; it's a French nickname, and they spell it "Mimi", so I think it should be that way.) For FIL, we still haven't decided. I like "Poppy" but MIL isn't a fan. We might end up going with "Grampa".

  • My kids call my mom Gigi. My dad is Pop. DHs mom is Grandma

I called my grandparents- Nana and Bampa and Oma and Opa

  • We will follow with what our nieces and nephews already call our parents. My mom and dad are Granny and Papa, DHs mom and dad are Grandpa and Yada. the first granddaughter started this because DHs mother always says "yada yada yada" while telling a story. So Yada was what she called her as a baby. It stuck with all of the kids.
  • Before our loss, my parents decided on Cici and Papi (pronounced Poppy). Not sure about ILs... BIL and SIL are due in May, so I guess that LO will get to pick for them.

I call my grandparents Grandma and Grandpa, and Grandmommie (and Granddaddy before he died).

My parents are MeMom and BePop and his are Mom Mom and Pop Pop.

My dad's parents are GG (Great Grandmom) and Poppy and when my mom's were alive they were Drom and Pop.

  • We have a lot of future grandparents and great-grandparents so we will probably have a lot of different names for them. Fi and I will more than likely be the first to have kids (all the siblings are still in high school for the most part) so no one has a set name yet.  My mother has told me she likes Nana and Grammy so that will probably be what she is called. I think we will wait and see about the others until we actually have a LO.

  • both sides already have grandchildren. ILs are Nana and Papa.

My parents are a little more complicated. My father was supposed to be Buca, but my nephew had trouble saying it so its now Bubba.

There was a lot of fighting about my mothers name. She finally decided on Noname (no name) pronounced No-nah-me, then she changed it to be pronounced No-num, but of course my nephew changed it to Nona.

  • My niece and nephew call my parents Nana and Tata (Croatian for Grandpa). The IL'S- not sure yet as they don't have grandkids yet. I could see my FIL enjoying Papa. Not sure of MIL.

  • I'm an only child, so ours will be the first. Have not talked about it yet. I call my mom's mom nana, she's now 94! Moms dad was Grandpa before he passed away. My dads parents passed when I was an infant. Dh's dad is passed, and mom lives in another country and speaks no English, so we'll see about that..

My exMIL wanted to be Oma because she's from Germany.  My exH's dad is just referred to as Old Man.

They call my husband's parents (their step-grandparents) Papa and Grandma with their first names after the endearment.

  • Your child might come up with their own name.  My mom wanted to be called Grandma.  Since my MIL is also Grandma, we referred to my mom as Grandma Bev.  DS couldn't say Grandma and started calling her Baba Bev.  So that's what has stuck even though he can now say Grandma.

  • My parents are Nana and Papa (I picked Nana because it was special to my mom and DD started calling my dad Papa on her own).  My grandparents are Grams and Gramps (that's what everyone calls them, and what they call themselves).  DH's parents are Grandma Lucy/Grandpa Bill and Grandma and Grandpa *lastname*.

  • My parents were going by Grandma and Grandpa until my niece (oldest grandchild) could talk. She called them Gigi and Poppy. Her other Grandma is Mimi. So future kids will call them by those names.

Dh's parents right now are calling themselves Grandma and Captain. And no, Fil is not a captain. He just started calling himself that as a joke and it stuck. We will see if our children will call them that or if they'll come up with their own names.

  • My parents dont have any grandkids and we will most likely be the first to give them some (my sister and her hubby aren't ready for it yet) and they want to be called Nina and Gdaddy - they are still very young and my brothers are only 9 and 12 so they dont want to be called your typical "Grandma and Grandpa". My MIL already has 2 grandkids and she's a Grandma.

  • My mom will probably Mommom, which is what I called my grandmother. My dad's deceased, so he'll probably just be Grandpa White? We'll see. My ILs already have a grandson, so they're Nana and Pops. If DH's grandfather is still around when we have kids, he'll be known as Big Pops.

  • I always had grammy and grampa on my dad's side, and gram and grampa on my mom's side. My mum is grammy to my nephews, and my dad decided he wanted to be called grumpy. It stuck with the nephews, so as long as my kids can say it, Grumpy will stick when we have kids too.

  • I love cart before the horse threads, so thank you Smile

I actually haven't thought too much about it. I imagine my dad will just want to be called Grandpa. DH's mom and step dad are already Grandma Lisa and Grandpa Louie, I imagine that will stay the same. The wild card will be DH's dad since he is basque and his whole family tends to go by the french name. He'll probably stick with atachi (I think that's the right word).

  • My parents already have five grandkids, so they're already Abuelita and Grosbvati (Grosfati?  You know, I've never tried to write that down...)  It kind of makes no sense anyways, my mom just decided that since she (kind of) speaks Spanish, she liked the sound of Abuelita better.  And my dad just followed in suite with German.  But at least he's got German heritage and is actually fluent in German.

For my ILs, it will be their first, and we've sort of wondered lately what they might be called.  They're French-Canadian, but we're fairly certain that FIL won't want to be Grandpere, because that's what MH calls his grandfather, and since he's still alive, that would be odd. Maybe Pepe and Nana?

  • My dad is dying for grandchildren and he has made it very clear that he will be "grandpa" (he hates papa, pawpaw, etc).  I am very stuck on what to do about his girlfriend though.  She and I get along fine, while I don't think they ever plan to marry, they've been together for 4.5 years so I think she's sticking around, and I know she will be a wonderful grandma figure to them.  But it makes me sad because I want my future kids to know who their grandma is (my mom is deceased) and I DO NOT want my dad's girlfriend to be called grandma.

I originally thought to have them just call her by name, but then I figured she probably does deserve some kind of title.  I am mostly of dutch background and MH is mostly german, and I discovered Oma is grandma in both languages so right now that's our pick.

My inlaws already have 6 grand kids and they are called Nana and Papa.  I simply call both sets of my grandparents "grandma and grandpa".  To differentiate when talking about them, we said grandma and grandpa in the house (they live in the suburbs) and grandma and grandpa on the farm ( they obviously lived on a farm, lol).

My parents changed their minds like 8,367,373,829 times and finally became Grammy and Grampy, likely to be shortened to Gram and Gramps when DS is older. This was of course after I had written the wrong grandparent names in my pg journal and baby books like 700 times. Lol.

  • My grandparents were (mom's side) Nanny and PawPaw and on my dad's Grandma Nila - Nila being her first name.

My daughter was the 1st grandchild for both sides and my mom wanted to be called Nanny, but since I was so close with my Nanny, I said absolutely not and we went for Nana. She is called Nana and my stepdad is called Grandpa.

My kids call all other grandfathers PawPaw "Firstname."
