Congrats Aug 12 mamas! I will add prenatal vitamins and folic acid to the list of advice. PLEASE start taking them today if you haven't already. They are extremely important for healthy development in those first weeks.
H&H pregnancies!

Don't freak out about the GTT (glucose tolerance test) that you'll have to take between 24 & 28 weeks. It's routine and given for the safety and well being of you and your baby.
Not everyone will be diagnosed with GD (gestational diabetes). Just some of us are unfortunate enough to have problems with insulin due to the placenta. It's not caused by anything you did or didn't do during your pregnancy. It's not caused by anything you did or didn't eat.
Everyone always asks "should I go on a special diet right before I test?" as if to trick the test or something. Don't try to trick the test! If you have GD, it's going to show up. Eat normally. It's better to know that you have it so you can take care of yourself and your baby.
You'll take a 1 hour test, if you fall that one you'll go back for a 3 hour test. Most ladies pass the 1 hour test with no problems. Most likely you'll be one of the ones that passes!
However, If you do end up with GD, head over to the "high risk" board. You'll get a lot of help and information from the board and all the ladies are nice and understanding.
I was diagnosed with GD. It was scary at first (not knowing what to expect) but after a few days everything became normal and routine. I was able to control my diabetes with diet and exercise. I did really well (I only gained about 11lbs during my whole pregnancy). A very positive plus was that my baby girl weighed 7lbs and 3oz at birth- a great weight for any baby, especially a GD baby.
Congrats to you all and good luck with your future GTT. Here's to a H&H 9 months!
Two pieces of advice - read up on c-sections. Even if you think you'll never have one, even if you're planning a med-free homebirth, even if you've done all the reading on how to avoid one. I had to have an emergency c/s a few hours after my normal 39 week appointment because of previously undiagnosed Interuterine Growth Restriction. What happened to DD and me is pretty rare, but I was completely unprepared for a c/s because I thought I would avoid all those interventions that can lead to a c/s. At least read the chapter in your pregnancy book so you know what you might be able to expect if you need to have an unplanned c/s. If you find out you need a c/s a little while in advance, the C-sections board will answer all your questions.
Also, call your OB if you feel like anything is wrong or you just feel "off". They (and doctors and nurses at the hospital) would much rather deal with a nervous momma than someone who ignored their symptoms and waited too long. Don't worry if it's a holiday or the middle of the night - this is what they get paid to do.
Good luck to you all and enjoy your pregnancies! Please post on the August 2011 board if you have any questions!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! I will also ditto ALL the previous posts advice.
Also:
- Def take your prenatals & DHA supplements everday.
- Read up on your feeding (breastfeeding or formula feeding) info. I didn't, thought EBF would be kind of a no brainer, and was stressed for the first couple of weeks because I was totally unprepared!
- Epidurals are your friend. I could have tried to make it through the pain, but the epidural didn't hurt AT ALL (it's true!) and helped me stop yelling "fvvvvvckkkk" super loud in the maternity ward during each contraction.
- Boppy body pillow was a life saver those last few weeks, although you prob won't sleep well no matter what.
- Start looking into decorating the nursery in your 2nd tri/early 3rd tri. You won't want to wait til the end!
- Bring water with you EVERYWHERE. I didn't drink enough, and almost passed out on a few occassions. You have to drink buckets, BUCKETS, of water daily.
- Summer dresses are your new best friends.
And you will laugh to yourself the first time you take a shower, look down, and can't see your vag because your belly is too big.
I just wanted to add, when you have your baby, let him/her be passed around. My son is now just over 3 months, and he will let anybody hold him and smile and coo. It's great because he's a little baby and loves meeting new people. He isn't totally attached to my arms all the time, but he definitely knows who his mommy is!
Good luck, and enjoy this time of your life!

I agree with all the other Aug Mamas. The biggest thing is stay inside or become BFFs with someone who has a pool NOW! haha I am sure next year you will all be sitting around like we are. It is CRAZY how fast it goes. Try and enjoy every min even when it sucks. I promiss it is all worth it in the end. Congrats August 2012!!!
I want to second the picture taking. Even if you're just taking crappy cell phone pics when you feel huge and unattractive. I never got around to getting any good pics, but I'm very happy I have my phone pics
If you just lurk, STOP! Participate! You'll be happy you did I adore my BMB

Ha! I love this. One of the first things my mom said when I called her to tell her the news today was, "oh you are going to be pregnant all summer! it's so hot!". ugh.
Aw, this thread is awesome. Thanks so much for all the advice! I loved reading all of your stories and tips. And I already love dresses, so I'm kinda psyched about that part. Pregnant ladies in maxi dresses are the cutest. I want to be one!
This is my second pregnancy, my first (he is 3) was born in October so I was pregnant for all 4 seasons. It's not that bad, I will say the worst part for me was having to buy so many different types of clothing. I live in a pretty mild climate but in the summers it can get in the 100's (Thank GOD for A/C). I drank A LOT of water, close to 2 gallons a day if I was out side. I also didn't do as much outside. This year for me will be a bigger challenge having a near 4 year old toddler.
I was also a heater during my pregnancy and even though I am only 4 weeks I feel myself being more hot than cold already.
To be honest I was never that hot. My house and car both had air-conditioning. I did however drink a lot of water and never swelled or got stretch marks.
Invest in a quality pair of comfortable sandals.
Shop in your 2nd trimester and get the nursery set up. In fact have everything done well in advance- your mobility could be greatly reduced in the last couple of months &you won't be able to shop, put equipment together, etc.
You will NOT have time or energy after the baby comes- have everything you will need for the first 8 weeks....
I only have couple of photos of myself pregnant & that is just fine with me! It is shocking just how big you get. I didn't love being pregnant but I definitely found it to be exciting.
Take the best care of yourself as you can- nine months of small sacrifices are worth it for the well being of your child!
