Pumping/BF moms: LO sleeping through the night

We don't know if LO would sleep through the night because we wake him up after 4- 5 hrs or so to eat however, he would likely go 6-7 hrs without eating if we let him.  Dr gave us permission to let him go as long as he wants overnight as long as he's eating 3.5 oz consistently during the day.

My problem is that I can't sleep after 4 or 5 hrs because I start hurting and have to get him up to feed for relief.  What do you do when our LOs start sleeping through the night??

  • Really you have 3 choices.  You could enjoy your sleep and deal with the engorgement (your body will adjust pretty soon).  You could keep waking LO up.  Or you could let LO sleep but get up to pump.  Personally, I'd probably go with the pumping option.  Sounds kind of god awful, but I'd be hesitant to drop the feeding completely so early in the game when supply is still being established and if they are already sleeping those long stretches, it certainly can't hurt to encourage them to keep doing that.  Plus, those middle of the night pumping sessions tend to be really good output, so it's a good way to start building a freezer stash.

    Agree with this.

This is what I will probably do. I know it has just been a fluke when she sleeps through a feeding. No way is she gonna do that all of the time(she didn't last night for example), so I would rather just pump it and encourage her to sleep. Thanks smilari!

  • I'm a middle of the night pumper myself. Makes that first early AM feeding a heck of a lot easier for all involved because I can take a nap and DH gets to feed the baby.

  • I would pump or wake him up.  DS started sleeping through the night at 6 or 7 weeks old.  It ruined my supply, but I didn't realize it until it was a big mess.  He was diagnosed as failure to thrive and I spent months trying to get my supply back up.  It's not worth it to let him STTN this early if it makes your supply tank.

I agree. I tend to have my biggest outputs in the middle of the night/early morning hours.
