32 weeks - babies weight!

Holy moly! My little Nora is weighing in at a whopping 4 lbs 13 ounces.... I am 32 weeks! all you moms out there does this seem big for still having 55 days left??? She was measuring 1 week ahead too. I am wondering how much more she will gain....my doctor did not say she was too big...she is 87th percentile. What do you think?

  • My LO was measured at 3lbs 9oz yesterday (31w6d), around the 30th percentile they said. There is a wide range of healthy, so it sounds like you are doing great!

  • At 28w2d my LO measured at 29w5d with an estimated weight of 3lb 3oz.  Dr said she's in the 90th percentile.  She said not to worry, hubby is big so LO will most likely be big as well.

I thought it was a little funny, the tech tried to tell me my EDD was off due to LO's size, but I informed her that since we had IUI I was most definately sure of when I got pg and that my EDD is accurate.

  • I had a u/s yesterday and LO is exactly the same size as yours, 4lbs 13 ounces.   My doctor said if he follows this curve he will be 9-10lbs at birth!  YIKES!

  • Last week my lo was measuring at 31w2d (which was only 1 day behind my edd) and at 3 lbs 9 oz. They didn't give me what percentile he is in.

  • How do you all know how much your LOs weigh?  My dr. hasn't told me what my LO weighs, but since DH was 10 pounds at birth, I'm kind of anxious to know.

I see a high risk specialist, so I get ultrasounds every few weeks.

  • At 31w 5 days little one weighed approx 4 lbs....They didn't say the percentage but did say he is measuring a week ahead... which they have been saying for awhile now....

  • Well they supposedly gain 1/2 a lb a week now, so that would put her in a healthy range by 40 weeks if she gains 3-4 more lbs.

By the way, how does your dr know how much she weighs? I would really like to know mine. I asked my dr at my last appointment and she said that he 'looked about right'. Should my Dr be telling me?

  • I believe the weight is based on measurements and then those measurements are compared to gestation and then each gestation has a certain weight which is how a Dr can say that your baby is measuring a week ahead or a week behind. After my Dr does the entire ultrasound he enters the data and the computer matches the data with a gestation and that's how he gets the weight. I had an ultrasound last week at 31 weeks and 1 day and my baby was said to weigh 3lb 9oz, so I'm assuming that's the said weight for 31 weeks. I think the weights are more estimates and not as accurate as people may believe.

  • When I went in for a u/s at 29 weeks, my doctor told me that she was weighing over 4 pounds already and that she had some of the biggest cheeks she had seen in an u/s.  They have me going in next Monday for another u/s to see if I might be further along then they though or if she had just hit a growth spurt.

  • I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but how do you all have such estimates of how big LO is?  Are you all having growth ultrasounds or is your OB just really good at guessing by feel?  I have only seen the midwife in my OB's practice so far and she hasn't said a thing in regards to LO's size so I was just wondering... Thanks ladies!

I've been having growth ultrasounds, since she has been running big.

  • Yesterday at 33 weeks and 2 days my little guy weighed in at exactly 4 pounds. The ultrasound tech said that puts him in the 25th percentile. I've got thyroid issues, so we're expecting him to be a bit smaller- I'm ok with a little one as long as he's healthy!

Yes, the size is determined through ultrasounds.  During the u/s the tech measures things such as the baby's head circumfrence, spine length and the lenght of the thigh bone.  All these measurements are used to calculate gestational age and weight.  They also measure the amount of fluid between the wall of the uterus and the baby to determine if your levels are correct.

The measurements aren't always accurate.  My friend had a u/s a couple of days before her son was born and was told he'd be over 9 lbs.  He was 7lb 5 oz at birth.

  • At 29 weeks baby was 3lbs and the doctor said he was 67%.  I have another U/S next week so we will see how he has grown.  I have growth U/S becasue DS was born a little small.

This. Something similar happen to a friend of mine. Don't let the weight estimates scare you too much ladies, chances are good they're not very accurate. And even if LO is on the big side now, doesn't mean he won't slow down a bit closer to delivery and be in a good healthy weight range.

  • I haven't had a single growth U/S...is that normal that my doc wouldn't do those? How often do they typically do them or is it more for keeping an eye on someone due to high risk or previous issues?

I haven't either. I am under the impression that they are only done for women who are higher risk (GD, for example) or had a small/large baby previously.

  • At my 32 week u/s they estimated my little guy to weigh 4lbs. 11oz.  My OB said that is perfect and right on target.
