I really didn't think labor hurt that much at all (I went med free and stayed at home till 8 cm). I just remember thinking I was not in real labor yet because it didn't hurt as much as I though it would.
I wouldn't really say pushing hurt. It was just an uncontrollable urge, but pain doesn't quite describe it.

For me getting to the first 3 cm during labour was almost pain free. But once I hit active labour, that changed. I started vomitting with every contraction. When I got to the hospital this time around, the anestisiologist was busy and couldn't give me an epi so I felt a little out of it during the transition period and could barely breath during delivery. I hope this doesn't scare you. My last two deliveries were great. I got an epi by the time I hit 4 cm and felt almost no pain. Good luck!!
I said labor only because I didn't feel much during delivery...thank you epidural!
This. I went from 2-8 cm in 2 hours before I got the epidural. Worst pain ever! I really don't even remember anything during that time except the pain. I couldnt talk or communicate in any way and was throwing up like crazy. I knew I wanted to remember the delivery a little more fondly so I got the epidural and don't regret my decision at all!

Can't help myself - I need to comment. It's not mentioned on here very often, but recovery can be absolute misery. I had an epi, so my labor & delivery were a breeze. But I had 2 second degree tears making post delivery very painful - sitting, using the bathroom, etc. Just a bit of advice if you do tear - take a stool softner, or else that first poo will be murder!!!
I was in labor over 30 hours and had horrible back labor so that's my vote. Delivery is ackward and uncomfortable but went by quickly. You're so excited to meet LO so you don't focus on the pain.

I voted for delivery. Labor wasn't all that bad... but delivery was awful. My epidural wore off so I felt EVERYTHING, the baby crowning was the worst burning pain ever.
i didnt have any pain meds or an epi and i think the actual delivery hurt more. i had some internal tearing and ended up having an episiotomy though so that was kind of extreme.

I voted labour- my labour wasn't progressing after my water broke so I got pitocin and wen't from a tight 3cm to 10cm in 3 hours but it was horrible. I went med-free and like PP could not communicate or function at all through it. My pelvis was too small for my large baby and the pressure was causing constant pain through pushing. The vacuum was a pain like no other when they tried it for the second time. Healing is awful but it is truly worth every minute of pain! Good luck!
I say recovery. My labor and delivery were relatively easy but it took two hours for them to stitch me back together. Needless to day these last three weeks have been pretty painful.
I can't pick one or the other because they were so different. Labor was tough because there was nothing you could do but get through each contraction. It was more mental than physical though, trying to stay relaxed between and during contractions. I went med free and was on pitocin since my waters broke before I got into labor so the contractions were intense, but I could handle them, especially with the help of my doula and husband talking me through each one.
I got lucky and while my contractions were really tough during transition, they spaced out and I got great rest in between, almost losing consciousness. Vocalizing low really helped me get through those.
I pushed for 4 1/2 hours before we called in the vacuum for help. When I started pushing I felt awesome about it because I could actually DO something and being more athletic I liked having somewhere to put my strength. But that many hours of it was mentally and physically exhausting. I'm so thankful I was allowed to push for so long though, because I got her really close and the vacuum worked beautifully. If it hadn't I would have had to have a c, which I really didn't want. I got her out on one contraction once we used it on the fifth or sixth push. I remember it hurting a lot when she came out, but I was just SO excited and relieved that she was making it out ok that I didn't care. The pushing phase is sort of like that. It hurts but you know you have to push as hard as you can.

I had back labour. Contractions were pretty bad but the epidural made labour doable. Pushing/Delivery wasn't bad. I had a second degree tear (doctors were discussing if it should be a 2nd or a 3rd degree tear. It was a bit messy down there) and even though that was tender, it wasn't too horrible for me. Once I rested a bit after delivery and ate, I was up and walking better than when I was when I was pregnant! (This is coming from one of the biggest pain wusses around.)
What was horrible is what PP I quoted; that first post birth BM was worse than anything else. TMI- I spent more time trying to birth that than the baby. I was severely constipated right before I had the baby...I didn't even poop on the table during delivery. Take the stool softners, eat a lot of fiber, stay hydrated. That was something I wish I would have done. I didn't want to do the stool softners and that was my biggest regret.

I voted for delivery. I had some back labor (she was turned with her spine facing my right side) that really sucked but was manageable with my doula applying counter pressure while my husband and I swayed. Honestly, when I went totally limp, and swayed, and let out a loud, low grunt with every breath and with music playing - I could almost ignore the pain while I concentrated on everything else.
I delivered in a tub, and man, surrendering to the urge to push felt so great, but crowning SUCKED. After her head was out, my contraction was wearing off, but I just pushed harder than I ever had just so it would be over. And oh man, that feeling of relief is the best physical feeling I've ever had.
However, the real worst part for me came after, when my placenta wouldn't deliver. One midwife had her hand in my uterus and another was massaging my abdomen as hard as she could - I swear, that part hurt more than a 9 cm contraction. That lasted a few minutes before they could put in an IV and the fentanyl started working - worst few minutes of my life.
I went med-free this time around and I literally felt like I was going to die. Poor DH's hand was so mangled from how hard I was squeezing it! Thank goodness I went from 5 cm-10 within 2 hours. By the time I was ready to push I was completely distracted with the pushing during the contraction so the pain wasn't at the forefront of my mind.
Some of the earliest contractions during active labor were the worst for me. I hadn't gone to the hospital yet, and my stomach was voiding its contents at the same time I was contracting. SO uncomfortable. My whole body, up to my throat and face, hurt like crazy.
Once I got to the hospital, I was better at handling the contrax, so even during transition, I felt okay. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't pleasant, but I knew it wasn't anything my body couldn't handle.
Delivery was just *weird* -- like taking the biggest BM ever! The only part that actually hurt was when LO's shoulders got a little stuck. But even that only resulted in a single first-degree tear.
I agree with this, but otherwise I think labour hurt more for me. My contractions were coming every 3-4 minutes, but lasting 1.5-2 minutes, so I wasn't getting any kind of break between them and they were INTENSE. Delivery only took about 20 minutes. Pushing was tiring, but didn't hurt except for when she crowned.
My recovery wasn't too difficult, either, but I'll repeat what others said: take the stool softener! I was taking it and the first BM wasn't too bad and then I forgot once or twice to take it. The second one was horrible. Remember I said I pushed for 20 minutes to deliver my daughter? Yeah, pushed for close to an hour with that second BM and it hurt! (Sorry, TMI)
Good luck! And don't freak yourself out too much. I don't think there's any real way to prepare yourself for what's going to come, and you certainly can't predict what your labour/delivery is going to be like.
My labor was super fast with my first so it turned out being unmedicated- not what I had planned. The first time they checked me I was at 9.5 and about to push, so I thought no wonder this hurts so bad!! Once I started pushing, it didn't hurt nearly as bad- it was like my body had this job of bearing down & it wasn't even close to the labor pain getting to 10cm. I didn't even feel her come out- it was just a lot of intense pressure, but it still felt better than the labor!
Can't help myself - I need to comment. It's not mentioned on here very often, but recovery can be absolute misery. I had an epi, so my labor & delivery were a breeze. Agreed! I was induced and got my epidural right after they broke my water, so I really didn't feel much labor and felt nothing during the delivery. But recovery was hell, which I wasn't prepared for! I also had 2nd degree tears.
I said labor. The contractions I felt before getting the epi were not fun. I pushed for 2 hours. It didn't hurt, it was just exhausting. My recovery hasnt been bad at all, but it has only been 2 days haha.
I really didn't think labor hurt that much at all (I went med free and stayed at home till 8 cm). I just remember thinking I was not in real labor yet because it didn't hurt as much as I though it would.
This. Although, I didn't go med free, I didn't get to the hospital until almost 7 cm and though it was painful, I actually expected much worse as well.
I was already 5cm dilated and contracting pretty regularly but couldn't feel them when I went in for my induction, so I was pretty much already in labor lol. I was fine, even after the turned the pitocin all the way up, until they broke my water. That's when it was horrible! Back labor all the way! I got my epi shortly after that, I was already 9cm so I almost waited too late. Delivery was awesome, I pushed for maybe 10 minutes, my epi was already starting to wear off so I could move my legs and I was aware of everything going on down there, but didn't feel the pain.
Um I'm jealous of the ladies who say it didn't hurt because I wanted to DIE. I had NO idea it was going to be that bad. I have a high pain tolerance and was prepared for the worst pain ever... But worst pain ever doesn't even get close to describing it. I labored for 10 hours without an epi and got to 8.5 centimeters before I got one. I started asking for one at 4 centimeters and about five hours before I actually got it. I seriously felt like someone was cutting me open and pouring acid in me. I had the epi for the pushing thank goodness because I pushed for an hour and a half, had an episiotomy and a vacuum assist. Not trying to scare you but I mean... Everyone said labor was like "really bad period cramps or poop pains" ... Not even comparable. The good news is I never had ANY pain or anything with recovery and I had ten internal stitches. Recovery for me was cake!
I said labor, the later contractions with all.the pressure just about made me cry,, i felt relieved to be able to push, it made me
feel Like I was able to get rod of that pressure by pushing her out. Granted I had an intrathecal right before it was time to push.
I'm not voting for either L or D because both were very easy for me. I'd almost go to say my first PP BM wasn't bad either (maybe bc everyone told me how horrible it was, I expected it to be worse?). What I will say though, is breastfeeding. That (the first 6-8 weeks of it) was the most difficult thing for me. It was pure he!! the first month an progressively got better but not until week 8/9 did I start to 'enjoy' it. ;-)
I'd go through L&D 10 times over those first few weeks BFing! Haha!

I had a very quick labor and delivery, 4 hours total. I went from 1 cm to 10 in just a few hours so contractions were intense. The delivery I didnt think hurt much at all just felt a burning sensation. Only complaint with delivery was exhaustion while pushing!! I also went med free so all in all it wasnt too bad I thought pain was managable

The labor and delivery for me were not the bad parts. I was on bed rest in the hospital for 4 days before they decided to induce me. Having to lay on my back and not move because of the monitors for 4 days was terrible. My back hurt so bad! I also have to say the recovery after tearing was not great either.
I went med free with both of my children :-) but the second delivery was a "dry" birth because the doctor broke the bag of water about an hour before i delivered. The birth then burned during delivery*OUCH* Other than that neither one was bad the pain is managable and one that you seem to forget most of when you look at your precious new baby. I am much older with this pregnancy, so I am interested to see how everything develops this time!
Definitely delivery for me. I didn't have any drugs and labor to me felt like insanely terrible period cramps...which wasn't pleasant but it was somewhat of a familiar pain. Pushing a 7lb 14 oz baby out of you? Not familiar. Ouch! But I would do it again in a heartbeat<3
I had a waterbirth so the dry birth thing didn't even occur to me, but my midwife broke my bag of water a couple of hours before I delivered...maybe that's why it hurt so bad? Plus I was pushing for an hour...
I said labor but I had terrible back labor and had an almost uncontrollable urge to push when I was only 8 cm dilated. My labor went fast and they say that makes the contractions more painful. Delivery was easy in comparison to labor, it didn't hurt too much even though I had a second degree tear. The key is to push into the pain and it will hurt less.
Labor was definitely the worse pain I had ever felt in my life. It was the
longest 3 hours of my life before I got the epidural. The delivery was nothing
because I couldn't feel anything
I actually thought the stitches afterward hurt most of all. The lidocaine injections didn't do a thing to numb me! Labor was manageable and delivery was intense, but none of it was as bad as I thought it would be. I went drug-free, and it all went so perfectly. I hope to get so lucky next time around.
Labor was worse for me. The contractions & healing were the only 2 painful things for me. They felt like awful diarrhea type cramps. I was only in labor for 3 hours & didn't have time for medication (or else I would have taken it!) My contractions were hard & fast from the get go, so I didn't have a slow progression or much of a break. I had an episiotomy & didn't even feel that. Even when they checked how dilated I was, I found that to be a relief from the pain! I was always scared of those 2 things beforehand. So overall, it was better than I thought it would be.

Agree! Even the epidural didn't ease the pain of back labor. Terrible!
