need HONEST name consult (clicky poll)

Ok folks, typically we're of the "won't tell name until baby is born" crowd. But the name we've been considering for some months now has some serious alliteration going on so I need HONEST opinions please!!

Is this name weird? Or is it fine?  I don't my little girl to be a freak in the name department! LOL

Jubilee Johnson  (still undecided on middle name, but it will not be a "J" name, haha)

  • It sounds like a book character.  A lot of the names we're drawn to have alliteration going on.  For us, I said it's cute for a little kid to have alliteration in their name, but how does it work as a grown up? That's where I get stuck and we go back to the drawing board with new names. GL

That's EXACTLY what I've been thinking! "This sounds like a character from a book or kids movie!" Thanks for the honest feedback!!!

  • I think it's unique and I appreciate unique names.  I could see later on how she or her friends might come up with a nickname to call her on a regular basis (related to her name of course!) because it is a little different but not in a bad way.  I would try to pick a one syllable middle name with it.  I think that would make it flow well.

  • I love it! It's not a usual name and IT IS NOT A STRIPPER NAME! Candy is a stripper name...

I think it's unique and special to you and that's all that matters! I don't know anyone with that name so that's why I love it!

If I'm having a girl her name will be Pnina and only a few people like it, but I don't care! It's a traditional Jewish name and I love it! (We changed the spelling, because it was going to be Peninah and there was pronunciation issues)

Sorry...I hate it. And not because of the alliteration.

  • My son's initals' are all A's (tripple A) but so is my FIL (we flipped his first and middle name for our lo's name).  Our little girl's initials are going to be AMA.  At first it was almost AAA also, but after thinking about it I wasn't crazy about the middle name (DH's grandma's name).

Here's the thing, what you want to name your kid is what you want to name your kid. But the one test that you should probably run any name through, especially the cutesy ones is, how would you react to a person with that name in a professional setting? I'm a fan of a lot of names that some people would find silly and, for each one, I've had to think, "Ok, if this kid went to apply for a job in the future, what would the boss think?"

With that being said, I think the name wouldn't really age well at all.

I appreciate your point.  I sort of think, "well, she's a girl so she can choose to change her name with marriage if she wants". So that makes me more tempted to go ahead with Jubilee because we like it so much.

  • I guess i agree that it would be KIND OF cute for a baby name... but the adult name would sound strange. Then again there are a lot of weird baby names now, so there will be a lot of weird adult names later, and Jubilee isn't the worst I've seen. Just wondering what you would call her for a nickname? Jubes? =/

It's iffy... but, if you feel it's The One, then just go with what you like!

LOL! Hadn't even thought of nickname. I tend to be uncreative in that area and call my current LO pretty standard nicknames like "bunny" and "sweet girl" and "darling".  Jubes is pretty horrible!!

Oh, I meant last name: sorry I was unclear. I think Jubilee is a great name and would be sad if she hated it so much she wanted to change it. I guess I was thinking she'd no longer be "Jubilee Johnson" if she didn't want to sound like a story-book-character. She could be "Jubilee Davis" or "Jubilee Kim" or whatever.  More normal sounding to me.

  • A couple who goes to my church had a baby last year and named her Jubilee. I thought it was a little weird at first, but it has grown on me!

As for the alliteration. I grew up with a first and last name that started with the same letter (my initials were BB.) It honestly never bothered me at all. In fact, as I was reading the comments about alliteration, it took me a minute to remember that my name was alliterative as well. If I ever thought about it at all, I kind of liked that my first and last name started with the same letter. I changed my last name when I got married, and recently I saw some really cute necklaces with an initial on them. I spent like 5 minutes trying to decide if I should get my first initial or my last initial. I actually said to the sales girl, "This would have been SO much easier if I still had my maiden name!" It's definitely not the big deal that some people think it is.

  • I voted for "yes!".  We had considered William Weber.  However all I could think of was saying it with a speech impediment.  Since there are very few (if any?) speech impediments with j's...you're fine!

Jubilee is such a great name...IMO

  • The alliteration is not the problem, it's the first name itself.  Jubilee does not pass the Supreme Court justice test.

(i.e. it's cute on a baby and little kid, but I can't picture a powerful adult female with that name)

I see where you're coming from, but... does "Condoleezza" past that test? I don't think it does, and that doesn't seem to have affected Condoleezza Rice's career in the least.

(The following are names of current or former female members of Congress: Patsy, Gracie, Cardiss, Dixie, Mazie. To me, none of those names seem like names of powerful adult females, but they are. I think that if your child has the potential to be really great, her name is not going to stop her.)

I actually really like it for a child's name, but I just cannot picture a grown woman with that name.  I think a lot of people would have a hard time taking her seriously.  So, I would definitely not use that name.  How about using Jubilee for the middle name and you could call her that, but then as she got older if she wanted to go by her first name she could?

I still go by my middle name, it's a minor inconvenience but not a big deal.  I always liked being a little different in that way.  In the same breath though, she can simply go by her middle name if she doesn't care for her first professionally.  No big deal.

  • I'm sorry that some people seem to be ripping you a new one over your name choice.  You wanted honest but some people are just being mean.  I really don't think kids are going to call her Pubes!!!

Anyway, its not may favorite name but shes your baby and if you love it who cares who likes it.  You should name her that because you and your husband like it.

We agreed on Mila for our little girl and most people don't like that.

Stick to your guns I'm sure once thats her name people wouldn't imagine calling her anything else. : )

  • Meh. There is no rule that says your child will be stuck with a name she doesn't like for life. I think all the speculation about her adult life is a waste of time. If she doesn't like her name, she can change it. If she doesn't want Jubilee on her resume, she could just put Julie. Or whatever. Names are not forever. I hated my first name growing up and it was really easy to avoid using it. On my resume I used a first initial and my full middle name. Easy.

Give her a normal middle name and she can use that if she isn't into Jubilee. Personally, I think it's pretty and there's nothing stripper-ish about it.

Do what you want. Haters gonna hate. Stick out tongue

  • IMO, name her what you want... Almost NOTHING can be as bad as what my parents did to me! My name is Autumn Skye, and although that's not too bad, my maiden name started with "S". So there you have it, my initials were

    A.
    S.
    S.

She wanted honesty and she got honesty.

And if you don't think a kid would be able to come up with something like that, then I question whether you have been around children before in your life. Kids make fun of other kids' names and they can be that cruel about it.

Jubilee sounds like an ice cream flavor to me. "I would like a scoop of Jubilee with rainbow sprinkles"

  • You asked for honesty - so here it is.....I couldn't vote on any of those choices because I think that name is amazing! That is a name that will not be forgotten (in a good way, I think). Baby brain has me shot right now - but I believe there are several famous athletes with alliteration names.

Do it! I think it's fabulous!
