What does Round Ligament Pain feel like?

I have been having a pain on my right side since last night. It was uncomfortable enough for me to notice it throughout the night (not the best night sleep I've ever had) but not sharp enough to have me doubled over or cause great concern. I don't have any other symptoms of concern (no spotting, no fever, not tender to touch). I'm wondering if it could be round ligament pain. It's not constant, but I will feel it every few minutes and then it goes away.

Re: What does Round Ligament Pain feel like?

  • It's short a short stabbing feeling for me...sometimes feels like stretching or pulling a muscle too. If it becomes constant you should call your OB...RLP isn't continuous. You can always call your OB anyway to verify .

  • For me, it feels like pulling a muscle.  I notice it most when I'm trying to go to sleep and I move too quickly. If you've been feeling it every few minutes since last night, I'd recommend calling your doctor.
  • I will probably call my doctor for peace of mind. I'm hoping it's just a symptom of constipation, but it would be good not to worry. I did just have an ultrasound on Tuesday and everything looked good, so I'm going to stay positive and eat some more fibre :)

  • I get deep sharp stabbing pains on the side of my abdomen on the right. I get them about 3 times every night. I had the same pains before pregnancy. As soon as someone told me what round ligament pains were, I knew thats what I had.

Anyways, side tracked, they're painful for me, but they go away in less than a minute. Generally happen when I'm rolling over in bed or coughing.

  • like an appendix/ovaries being stabbed continuously. Took me about 1.5 weeks to get through that with DS in utero
  • RLP for me was a pulling feeling that ran along side my hip bones.  Is your pain always on the same side?  Abdominal pain and cramping is normal during pregnancy.  It could be a number of things.  Usually (and I say usually, every person and pregnancy is different) RLP is most often during 2nd trimester and on.  During early pregnancy and if it is always on the same side it could be caused by your Corpus Luteum.  Hope I am not being condesending but...after you ovulate the follicle which once contained an egg becomes a CL, a cyst that produces Progesterone which supports the pregnancy until it develops a Placenta.  It will disolve after time.  These pains usually show themselves when gassy and/or during/after a BM or intercourse.  If there is no bleeding and the pain is intermittent I would not worry.   But remember you can always call your doctor for reassurance.

  • Thanks everyone. The pains have pretty much gone away. I decided not to call and to wait until our appt on Monday (obviously go to the clinic if they got worse or if I had other symptoms).

  • I have been having this pain for a few days and finally decided to call the doctor.  That's exactly what they called it - Round Ligament Pain - and is completely normal.  I was told to use a warm towel over the spot where you feel the pulling and also sit in a recliner.  Because I don't have one, it was suggested to lay on the sofa and elevate my legs at 60 - 90 degrees.  We'll see how this works.  Finally I can stop worrying something was wrong with the baby.
