I dislike how often I see Owen and Oliver, but only because I think they're great names and don't want them to climb the SSA list too much.
I really dislike Harper, Gemma and Stella. Not exactly sure why, except growing up a I knew a girl with the last name Harper and she was not nice at all.

Stella and Sophia seem to be very popular now, its nuts!!
I agree- I named my LO Whitney, and then a few months later there is a show on tv named Whitney, I wasnt happy. Tottally dumb of me, I know!
I hate when someone says something like, "Oh, what do you think of Paisley? It's a family name." Really, it's a family name, huh? I feel some posters like the trendy names that most on this board wouldn't and then throw on an "it's a family name" to protect themselves from flames. I know some names are family names. I just don't always believe that super trendy names and/or horribly misspelled names that are normally hated on this board are conveniently "family names."
"However, she mistook the drowsy-eye/alcohol warning for a winking-eye alcohol suggestion."
The "trend" of super old-fashioned names bugs me a little. I am absolutely into timeless, classic names that will grow with a child, but it weirds me out a little to meet a 2 year old named Mildred or Ethel. :-/

I can be very pet peevy about names. I have worked with kids and I would just cringe.
I would have to be cliche and say I despise Aidan, Brayden, Caden, Jayden, Hayden...Zayden!
Seriously. It might be cute on a child but I just cannot fathom an adult man with a career introducing himself as Caden. Ew!
I also really do not like Grace and Rose as middle names because they are sooooooo overdone. Even if they're cute, they are not special because every little girl born in the last 2 years practically has that middle name.

Totally agree with the bolded part and it is my pet peeve. Names I am sick of seeing are Harper and Piper, mainly because I don't see the appeal.

Same here. And I hate when people change up the spelling of names. Like instead of Aubrey: Aubree or Aubrie or Aubyre.....
I had to laugh at a friend of a friend that teaches at an inner city school in Atlanta and said her class is like a used car parking lot. She has a Mercedes, Beemer, Lincoln, Porche, and a Lexus. True story, I promise.

My son's name is Aiden. At the time he was born in 2006, it was LARGELY popular. I knew there were going to be at leave five versions of Aiden, Aidan, and Ayden on his Kinder roster. Because of my DH's crazy naming criteria Aiden was the ONLY name he liked at the time, so we went with it. Eventhough I LOVE my son's name, I agree it's overdone. :-)

I just don't like when people purposely mispell names to be creative, especially when you add a Y to a name. It looks so trashy. Have you ever seen that show Toddlers and Tiaras? Case in point. "And here's contestant number5, please welcome....Ryleey/Kayley/Madysyn.
I don't have any name pet peeves. I feel like what someone wants to name their child is up to them. Unless they ask for advice, I'm not going to tell them that the names they like are awful, just because they're not my cup of tea. of course I cringe when I hear some names or think in my mind: "I would never name my child that!" But to each their own.

Ughh, but at least you spelled it correctly! Be proud of that! It's a nice name, but I know someone who named her kid Ayden. All I can think of when I see it is a pirate saying "Ay Ay Captain!"

I once heard of a girl being named La-A. When a substitute couldn't pronounce her name correctly, her mom got really mad and complained to the Principal. Apparently the name is pronounced: La-Dash-A....whoda thunk it??
I didn't read all the responses so sorry if this has been said already.
I hate purposely misspelling a name, or smashing two names together. I really hate it when someone smashes two names together to try and honor two different people. How is ruining both of the names honoring anyone?
I and I am honestly stunned at how many bad names the ladies on this board can find.

I absolutely hate when people pick out names just based on the possible nicknames. Ugh, just name your child what you want to call them.
This, or people who worry about what they are going to call them, NN-wise before they are even born. I understand thinking of potential NNs to make sure you are ok with them, but picking one before they are born is so weird to me. I think NNs should be organic.
The "trend" of super old-fashioned names bugs me a little. I am absolutely into timeless, classic names that will grow with a child, but it weirds me out a little to meet a 2 year old named Mildred or Ethel. :-/

When people say this on the baby name board. All. The. Time. I mean, I get it, Cupcake or Bunny would look bad on a resume, but Caden? There are TONS of little Cadens running around right now, and they will all grow up and become teachers, lawyers, accountants, etc. So, no, it won't seem weird to see his name on a resume in 20 years.
And don't get me wrong, I very much prefer traditional names. I just think it's a dumb argument.

Oh please. Of course what someone wants to name their child is up to them. But this is a baby name board. The point of which is to discuss the names you like, don't like, and why.
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
majorly dislike the crazy spellings. These kids will have to put up with years of mispronunciation and misspelling... When I read, "Robert" on a roster... I know exactly how to say it - I know that child is a boy - WTF is a Raabyrt? lol Just nms - Why the need to be, "creative?" I also don't care for names that would look, "childish" on a resume. Using the Robert example, there's a big difference between Robert and Bobby. Bobby is a cute name for a 3yr old, not so much for someone applying at Goldman Sachs. It's like parents are skipping real names and giving their kids nick names. Or giving boys feminine names. Or smooshing multiple names together. Basically if it's not tried and true I would never touch it. haha Apparently I have several name peeves.

I don't feel it is a dumb argument at all. Which is clearly why I said it. To me, the biggest pet peeve of naming a child is not picking a name that ages well. Will it be the norm to see all these super trendy and feminine male names on resumes? Sure. Does that make it okay to give your child a name that would only sound good on a 5 year old? Not really.
Oh man, there's a lot... I think the one I hate the most is last names as first names.
I actually prefer it when people make names up. When I hear names like Myleisha and Dejarey (both real names of people I have known), at least I can appreciate that someone used their creativity to make something unique. 90% of the time the names suck, but hey, they're trying.
A last name as a first name just seems to me to be the laziest kind of creativity. "Oh, instead of choosing something classic, or honoring my family, or using a first name I love, or making something new, I'm going to use something that isn't a first name and just pound that round peg into the square hole I want it in!" That's going to sit just great with the rest of society!
...Sorry for the rant, but I must say, I really don't like when people try to turn existing surnames into something they're not.
When people name their kids after luxury cars. Or luxury fashion designers.. yes. I know someone who named their kid a fashion designer name and she can't even afford the brand.. Sorry but yeah why!? I will use an example.. Fendi.. (she didnt use this) can you imagine your baby boy being named Fendi or Dior or Vuitton... !?
I hate names that are basically just the appropriation of random WASP-y last names. Leighton, Grayson, Harper, Peyton . . . the list is long. For most of the figures that popularized such names they were family names and often not even real first names (Harper Lee's first name was Nelle, for example). Then others just think the name sounds cool and use it even if it lacks any real meaning or family significance, which is missing the point IMO.
Family names are the exception -- if you want to use a family last name go for it.

IMHO, it's ghetto/trashy to name a kid something like that to me - especially when you can't even afford to buy the stuff! Some designer brands have decent names like Chanel (maybe for a MN), but Vuitton?? Gimme a break!
I get a nice eye-roll going when a poster lambasts a name's trendiness and then proceeds to offer suggestions that are just as trendy, but simply belonging to a different, current trend. There are good trends and bad trends, but a trend in and of itself does not equate sh!ttiness.
