Baby Names

WDYT of Thor?

Not joking, my dh and I like the name.  The full name we are thinking about is Thor Alexander.  We have plenty of time to be thinking, but we disagree about almost every name we come up with.  Our parents hate it, though.

  • I went to school with someone by that name. Its really not as weird as it sounds when you write it here. He was a nice guy, is currently successful and the name fit him just fine. I guess because I have a good association with it, I dont mind it.
  • Is this real life?

    Omg. NO!!!!!

I had a {very nerdy} high school history teacher who MADE us call him Thor, which is literally meaning "The God of Thunder" Lol. Please don't do this to your child.

  • I find it to be horrid.  Sorry.
  • Terrible, really.

It also sounds pretentious; I would think "his parents must have thought they were soooo cool, naming their child after a god."

  • It's great for a superhero, not so great for a human being.  What about switching it to Alexander Thor?  Then he could use Thor or he could use Alexander as he gets older.
  • A friend of mine has a DS with this as a MN,and I think it is ok as a MN.As a FN it is just too much.

  • I'm going to be in the minority but I think it's kind of cool. I have a huge soft spot for mythology names.

We are considering Apollo, and I still haven't decided for sure whether I think it's over the top. Admittedly, a nerdy fat kid named Thor or Apollo is going to have a harder than average time. But our children will be growing up in a super liberal, hippyish community, so we might be able to pull it off.

If you don't use it for a first, I definitely think it's great for a middle!

  • Not really a fan unless you are Russian (it is Russian, right?).  Would you pronounce it with the "th" sound or like "tore"?  I've heard it both ways.

**facepalm** Thor is the Nordic god of thunder. And it is not pronounced "tore."

  • It's DD's nickname.

I think people will automatcally think of the god "Thor". How about  "Thorian" or "Torin"?

  • I think it's REALLy cool. But maybe too cool, you know? I like the idea of Alexander Thor and you could call him Thor if it fits him.

DH and I have Apollo on our short list, but we don't know if it's over the top either! I think Thor is definitely over the top though.

  • I like it! I looked after a little boy named Thor who was absolutely adorable. It was pronounced 'Tore' though, which surprised me. His brother and sister had very normal names so it was surprising, but really grew on me. Use it if you want, people will learn to love it. Naming a child after a character in ancient mythology is not weird at all. Just think of all the little Dianas and Freyas running around out there.

  • I actually agree with a full name of Theodore or Torin, then the nn Thor. I do like Thor, but it's a guilty pleasure name and would never actually give it to a human baby. It would be like naming your LO Zeus, Valkyries, Poseidon, Juno, Jupiter, or Neptune.

There are some mythology names that are more accepted than others like:

Parvati, Phoebe, Athena, Apollo, Brigit, Hera

  • The only Thor I know IRL is a mastiff. I agree with PP that it could work as a middle name though.
  • If you like it, that's all that matters.  If it were me, I would not entertain the idea (and trust me, my comic book nerd husband has asked a thousand times and I have not deigned to seriously consider it just as many times).
