How do u NIP?

I have totally been avoiding nursing in public. I'll plan to do errands between feedings and bring a bottle of breast milk just in case. Part of it is that I'm really dependent on the boppy still to get DS set up and I can't exactly tote that around with me :) I'm wondering if it will get easier in the next week or two and I'll just be able to hold him? How do you do it? TIA!

  • I have a Bebe Au Lait cover.  Holding him will get easier and he will become more efficient, so it won't take as long.  Practice nursing him without the boppy at home.

  • Now I just hold her, but I have used the diaper bag as a stand-in for the boppy. It isn't a perfect substitute, but it allowed me to venture out w/o bringing the nursing pillow everywhere. If you want a little more privacy for nursing, dressing rooms are a great spot. Most malls ans BRU have a designated nursing room.  the front seat of the car in a shaded parking spot also works. GL, you can do it!

  • I've only done it once so far.  It was at the park and I had DS in a "Hot Sling".  It worked out well and it was pretty easy to do.  I never reaaly nursed DS1 in public.  I would bring pumped milk, go places that had nursing rooms like our mall, or I would nurse in my car.

  • I used to take a bottle with me all the time, but now I'm getting braver.  We use the boppy at home too, but I've found a way to sit by pulling one leg up and DD lays on my leg at about the same height as she does the boppy.  I have to sit, I can't stand and feed her.

I haven't NIP in front of people yet, but I have nursed in my car and also a dressing room.  I have decided dressing rooms will be my go to, and if I'm somewhere without one, I'll go to the car.  I just don't think I can do it sitting at the table in a restaurant or something.  We also use a nipple shield which makes NIP harder too, it's hard to do all that under a cover and be discreet.  I also have really large breasts and feel very exposed, my baby's head does not cover my breast like smaller breasted women.

  • Lets see... I've nursed in dressing rooms, on couches in restrooms (a lot of ladies rooms have a couch or two), in booths at restaurant with a blanket tossed over us, in the waiting room at the doctors just straight up nursing because the blanket was so just not working at that moment. Also just nursing right out in my Le Leche League meeting, but that's to be expected. I really have no modesty left when it comes to my boobs. I figure I try to be discreet, but if some one has a problem with it than they can look away, a crying baby is far more disruptive than a boob.

  • So far I have nursed in my car and in a bathroom at buy buy baby (some man kept me out of the nursing room because his precious wife was in there, the gall!).

I did get some practice at home yesterday, had some company and threw a receiving blanket over me. They commented on how well I could do that and they couldn't see a thing - I had never tried before that moment lol

  • I have nursed everywhere, and I use a bebe au lait cover. However, we took the kids to an outdoor concert Saturday, and it was so windy that the cover was pretty much useless. Oh, well. I really don't care anymore if somebody catches a glimpse. I aim for modesty, and if anyone sees a breast, it is b/c they are trying to sneak a peek. In which case I will humiliate the Hell out of them if  they dare attack me for feeding my baby. Devil

  • I usually carry a thicker blanket with us so I can fold it up and put it under her to support her weight, like the boppy. I dont use the boppy at home though.

  • So far, I nursed her in the mall. I sat on one of the benches near the entrance since it wasn't busy and used a receiving blanket with little issue. Another time at a mall I just went into a fitting room at JC Penney. The only place I'm reluctant to nurse is in a restaurant when it's very busy...that's too close quarters for me, so the couple times we've gone out I go out to the car to nurse her.

I used to only do football hold which is near impossible without the right seat or pillow, but I've recently gotten pretty good at cradling her which is not difficult if I can find a chair with an arm on it to rest my arm.

Exactly all of this, especially dressing rooms!

Also, I either wear my maternity pants (that are now falling off me) or I have a spaghetti strap black tank top that I've loosened the straps on to pull under my bra for tummy coverage. I cannot use a nursing cover because it's just too hot for me and Liam but I cover every bit of skin that I possibly can with my shirt while in public.

Practice covering up and propping baby up at home and it'll get easier.

  • I have a bebe au lait cover. I started out last weekend when my sister was over for the day. She has a 5 month old that she bf's. This weekend, the IL's were over and H encouraged me to use the cover again. I am small so the cover works well for me.

I haven't really gone out much yet with LO. If I do, it is short trips.

  • When I know I will be nursing in public, I try dressing for it - a nursing tank and cami usually.  I have a peanut shell cover, so between the cover, cami, and tank, it is pretty discreet.

I get everything ready under the cover and then just pop DD under the cover.  She is a great nurser though and doesn't mind the cover, so it works well.  DS always hated the cover so I was much less likely to nurse in public.
