Trying to Get Pregnant

To drink or not to drink?

That is my question.  Since we're trying, I've switched to half-caff coffee, really cut down on pop, and tried not to drink alcohol between when I think I may have ovulated (still a mystery) and the start of my next cycle. Have you ladies cut down, too? Quit caffeine and alcohol altogether? Thoughts?

Re: To drink or not to drink?

  • Nope.  I still drink alcohol.  I'm on glass #2 tonight, in fact.  Not much of a caffeine drinker but I still have a cup of coffee when I want it.

I will continue to drink alchohol until I see that BFP.  You don't share a blood supply until 6 weeks.  If I had stopped drinking when we started TTC, it would be almost 6 months since I had a drink...not gonna happen.

Personally, I don't drink caffeine or alcohol but I used to before I started spending tons of money each cycle on fertility tx.  Now I am afraid to do anything at all that could even remotely effect our chances.

  • I drank coffee my entire pregnancy except part of the 2nd trimester when it made me sick.  And I craved soda during my pregnancy.  So yeah, I drink caffeine all the time.
  • I only cut back on soda.  I still have my 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning, and have a glass of wine about 2-3 times a week.  I've heard the saying here "drink til it's pink!" And that is what I am doing.

I'm just starting to chart. I've read the important chapters of Taking Charge of Your Fertility and bought the basal therm. Waiting to chart everything- CM, etc.- til start of next cycle. Thanks!

  • No, you don't share a blood stream during the 2WW, and I like beer/wine too much :)  I'm not a heavy drinker, but I've learned a lot here to tell me it's okay.  I don't plan on cutting back coffee till a BFP, either.  Even then, if my OB says it's okay for me to have a small amount of coffee, I probably will.

This. 9 months is long enough to without a drink.

  • I don't drink caffeine and rarely drink alcohol, so it's not a big issue for me, but if I'm in the mood for a beer, I drink one.  I really wouldn't even think twice about a night out on the town while TTC - obviously, I'd test first if I was 10+ DPO, but other than that, it wouldn't be a big deal for me.

I haven't cut back on anything.  And FWIW I hate the term "sharing a blood supply"  While its obviously not a good idea to drink while pregnant, fetal and maternal blood never actually mix.

I stand corrected. Just read this on the American Pregnancy Association...

The placenta is responsible for working as a trading post between the mother's and the baby's blood supply. Small blood vessels carrying the fetal blood run through the placenta, which is full of maternal blood. Nutrients and oxygen from the mother's blood are transferred to the fetal blood, while waste products are transferred from the fetal blood to the maternal blood, without the two blood supplies mixing.

    https://www.americanpregnancy.org/duringpregnancy/fetallifesupportsystem.html

I never realized this... I feel like I've always heard people (not necessarily here) saying the blood supplies mixed.  Glad to know the real answer!

  • I drink caffeine but I've been cutting back a lot because it stresses me out and gives me the shakes. I only drink alcohol during my AF. Everyone is different and I respect everyone's decision. I would probably drink til it's pink but MH doesn't drink at all so it's not like I really have anyone to drink with unless I go out for girls night.

  • I basically switched from soda to tea, mainly because the cans of soda are lined with chemicals.  I occasionally have a soda when my husband and I go out to eat.  If we're on a road trip I like to get a soda in a glass bottle.  I never really drank alcohol very much, so I can't really comment on that.

  • I've quit alcohol and caffeine completely. I'm doing just about everything that I've read will help conceive. Hey, if giving up caffeine and alcohol can get us a baby faster, it's totally worth it.
  • Since nobody can give you a definite answer on how much alcohol and caffeine is okay to have and when to have it, I have cut down on both, not entirely, while TTC. One cup of coffee a day and a couple of drinks here and there. I have found that the two weeks leading up to ovulation are even harder for me than the dreaded TWW so I don't want to make them even more miserable without caffeine and alcohol the whole time. After ovulation I pretty much lay off both but I'm not always perfect and I think that's okay too.

  • I posted this same question a few weeks ago and since then have joined the "drink til it's pink" team. It can be stressful TTC, sometimes I need my wine...

  • Last month I didn't cut down on anything but this month I have definitely cut back. I have pretty much eliminated alcohol (except for the 2 glasses of wine I had for our anniversary dinner the day I O'd) and cut back on caffeine. I used to have about 4 cups of tea a day and now I have maybe 1 in the morning.  I usually never drink soda so that's not a problem.

  • I definitely haven't cut down.  9 months is long enough.  And even then, you will catch me with a cup of coffee or soda here and there. Every now and then, I just really need a big fountain coke to make everything better :) My DD turned out just fine.
