December 2011 Moms

Is a swing necessary?

We have a Rock N Play Sleeper, a bouncer (SnugABunny) and a Jumper.

Does the RNP kind of double as a swing or do you think we should get a separate swing as well?

Our shower was this past weekend, so we got a bunch of goodies. We're going shopping this coming weekend to buy what we still need.

Re: Is a swing necessary?

  • It won't be necessary if your child likes their bouncy chair.  From what I have experienced and seen on the boards is that babies tend to like either the bouncy chair or swing (but not both most times).  DD ended up hating the swing, she would scream every time I put her in it but she loved her bouncy chair and could spend a lot of time in it.

  • It depends on your baby. For us, the swing was a necessity. It was all DD would sleep in (unless she was sleeping on us), she took her naps there and it was our only time of sanity for a while. She had absolutely no interest in the vibrating bouncy seats and the RnP doesn't rock on it's own, so that would have meant us actually doing the movement for her. A jumper is a different sort of nice thing to have, but on a completely other side of a swing.
  • It was for us! We used the technique taught in the book Happiest Baby on the Block. DD has slept through the night since day1 thanks to that book and is 3 and harps never had one day in her life she hasn't slept through the night. Everyone I know gets that book as a welcome baby gift and all have had success! To note, we did not let DD sleep in the swing at night it was just something that soothed her.

  • We used both.  The swing more when he was really little, and then the chair and swing as he got older.  I think it just depends on the baby.
  • DD LOVED her swing. I could put her in there and she could watch me do whatever I was doing and was being rocked so she never fussed. It was great. She did not like her bouncer for longer than a couple minutes at a time. I don't have any experience with a RNP so I don't know if it would replace a swing.

By the time LO is into the jumper they won't want to sit still in the swing, so that doesn't really replace one or the other, in my experience.

  • I say yes!  And no...the RNP does not double as a swing...they are two totally different things.  And all babies are different, but ours LOVE the swing...I got a lot done when they were napping in it...IMO, a bouncer is whats unnecessary...it was one of those things we rarely used and LO didn't like to be in it for longer than 10 or so minutes.  I would get one to cover all your bases.

  • For us the bouncer chair and the swing were both a MUST! It really depends on your baby and what they like.

  • I never had a bouncer chair with DS, but his swing was a lifesaver!  I hope DD likes it as much.

  • Like PP said, if baby likes the bouncy, you should be fine without a swing.  I had two kids that LOVED the swing, hated the bouncy and one kid that LOVED the bouncy, hated the swing so far!

  • It's looking like I'll end up buying one... lol

Maybe I'll wait and see if baby likes the bouncer and if not, then I'll send H to pick up a swing.

  • I depends on the baby.. my son hated the swing but loved the bouncy vibrating chair whereas my daughter was completely opposite and LOVED the swing. Maybe hold off and see what your baby is like or buy one of those smaller cheaper travel swings - they do the exact same thing and take up half the space and money. And they're lightweight so you can take them places with you .. visting friends and family or even into your bathroom while you take a shower - life saver for me!

  • Totally depends on your baby.  My DD didn't like the swing initially, but it later became necessary to put her to sleep ..she was a very active baby and was hard to put down for her naps until we re-introduced the swing.
