Salicylic Acid??

Hey ladies, let me start by saying that this pregnancy has turned my face into that of a 13 year old boy in puberty! My skin has NEVER been this bad and broken out in my life! Here is my question...

Is salicylic acid safe to use during pregnancy? Dr. Google gave me conflicting information. I use Clinique skin care products and I have a gel called Acne Spot Solution (it's amazing by the way), but the active ingredient is 1.0% salicylic acid.

Has anyone been told if this is safe, and if it is safe, is there only a certain percent that is safe to use?! TIA! :)

Re: Salicylic Acid??

  • I've had terrible acne most of my life! (Pregnancy has somehow miraculously cleared it up, crazy enough!) In meeting with the two doctors I've had during my pregnancy, neither one has been worried about any of the products I use - benzoyl peroxide, erythromycin or azaleic acid. He actually said I should use all the help I can get since pregnancy usually makes people completely break out and "there's no use in being miserable".

I especially wouldn't worry about anything that is just used to treats isolated spots, personally!

  • I used a face wash with it for the first 4 months or so then found conflicting information online, saying that washes are ok but not products that stay on skin for an extended period of time (lotion, masks, spot treatments) are not. I finally asked my doctor because my skin is getting gross and she not to use any because it can have the same effect as taking asprin. Needless to say, I need a facial! So, on top of my post baby list are washing my face and having a cosmo!

  • I specifically asked my doc about this. She said any wash with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide is okay. As PP said, I would just stay away from anything that sits on your face with either of these ingredients (like spot treatments or medicated moisturizer).

I realize that I should've specified that this particular acne gel is supposed to be left on. I was recommended to apply it at night and then wash my face in the morning. So this 1.0% salicylic acid would be on my skin for an extended period of time.

    I would say no then.

  • I use a facial scrub with salicylic acid...I quit using it in first tri and most of second tri, but my skin got so bad I had to start it again.  From what I have read about it is it caused deformities in baby rats (ratlings?) when they fed  it to the mamma rats.  So I figure as long as I'm not eating the stuff I should be ok.

  • My OB said it was okay to use washes with hydrogen peroxide and salicyic acid in it.  He also prescribed me some Clindamycin gel to apply to help combat my pizza face.  Even though he prescribed it, I felt some trepidation about using it, but he assured me it was perfectly safe and has helped.

  • I asked my OB about that.

She said I can use whatever I want on my face, and as long as I'm not swallowing it by the tube I have nothing to worry about.

  • A friend told me this so I asked m OB, she said there isn't much research and just to be on safe side she told me not to use it.  I didn't for the first trimester but did use a cover up that has a small amount of salicylic acid in it when i got a blemish. I started using my acne face wash in my second trimester about 3 times a week, I found I needed it.  I really don't see what harm it could do when it's put on your skin but I undertand not much research has been done and just use it less than I normally would.
