Babies on the Brain

Late UO--Long

I was at a (VERY) popular kids clothing/gear resale this morning.  To give you an idea of HOW popular, people #1 and #2 in line---they lined up at 12:30 this morning (and the sale started at 8).  People joined in the line throughout the morning with chairs and blankets and etc.

When it got to be about 6:50am ish, people in line started sending someone back to the car with the blankets, chairs, etc (the doors open at 7).  We, at this point, had been there for about 1 1/2 hours and were well in the first half of the line, but still behind what we guessed to be about 150 people (H's guess was surprisingly accurate as we were given 154 and 155 stickers).  There was well over 200 people behind us in line, wrapping around the building almost completely.   The group of women, however, in front of us, did not budge when the masses started putting their stuff away in their cars.  They did not budge when the line in front of them moved forward a good 40+ feet (now that people were standing  up and chairs were away, there was a lot more room).  They just kept b!tching "They aren't open yet, we're not moving".

The people behind us started to rumble and riot.  I kept staring at these women thinking "surely they realize they are holding up the line and the doors are going to open soon".  (Note:  The way they do it is they sticker everyone with a number going in the main doors to the building and then only let in x amount of people at a time to the area where the product is.  We were in the 300's last spring (getting there half an hour before they opened) and didn't get in for almost 2 hours post-door opening.)

I tried to be very patient, but people started passing by us as well and I'll be damned if your laziness is going to get my as$ at the end of the line OR in the middle of some psycho tabloid children's resale riot (some of these mom's mean SERIOUZ BUSINEZ).

Finally one of the women in the group said something to the effect of "Fine, I'll wait in line while you guys take the stuff to the car" and then they all proceeded to b!tch for the next 10 minutes or so until the doors were actually opened.

The  UO?  While I think chairs, blankets, etc are awesome and have zero problems with people using them while waiting in the cold for hours on end, I think at some point, a reasonable person will get rid of them in order to not hinder the progress of the entire group.  When you realize everyone in line is putting their chairs/blankets/etc away, if you choose to sit on your as$ when the line is moving forward signifigantly, you lose your place and your right to *** if the line moves around you.   There were literally 200 people behind them (I figured 100, but we saw stickers as people came in the building), all waiting to move forward and get into the warm (it was 47 degrees as of 8am).   Did they really think that at 8am, when they opened the doors, the entire mass of people behind them should have to wait while they all took their stuff to their cars?

  • I don't think that would be unpopular at all. People are rude in general but add in a good sale and their rudeness slips into "there is nothing or no one more important than me right now". I avoid big sales and black Friday because people can be such asssholes.

  • Not UO. When I went to get Stella I had to put my name on a list and come back later that same day. I was told by others to get there early, so I went at 8:45 and the store opened at 9am. Yeah, there were 75 people in line for 25 pups. No Stella that day. The next time I saw a pup come up that I wanted, I got there at 6am. I was #5 in line. I had blankets and a chair and magazines. When it got closer to opening up time, We all stood up. I didn't want to lose my place in line, so I propped my chair (folded) against the building with my blanket on it and just hoped no one would steal it. I would not have hindered the line by hanging out on the sidewalk reading my Real Simple.
