Enough milk?

A recently gave up drinking from his bottle, but now that he drinks from sippy or straw cups exclusively, his milk consumption has gone down a lot.

I offer him the same amount of milk at expected times, but now that he can't sit back and guzzle it, he's not as interested. He has a good appetite and drinks a lot during the day (still prefers water sometimes), but I was just curious if this was normal or if I should try any tricks to encourage him to drink more. He was drinking around 25 oz a day before, but probably around 15 oz now.

  • I don't think it's a big deal.  Kaya was the same way at first but once she got the hang of the straw and sippy and once she got used to cold milk, she started to drink more.  I don't even know how much she drinks anymore but we just offer her milk and water.  Sometimes she will just want water, too.  Some days she won't drink much milk at all but some days she'll drink a ton.  I figure as long as she's growing, she's getting what she needs.

  • Ashton is the same way, I wouldn't worry about it.  Ashton started to drink more once he got used to having milk in a sippy cup as opposed to the bottle.  We have also switched Ashton to 1% based on new recommendations and he drinks way more than he did the whole milk.
  • Our pedi told us that after one year, he should be getting at a minimum of 12 ounces a day.  I told her he usually had about 18 and she said that was great.  15 sounds fine.

  • I wouldn't worry. I would be happy if my lil guy drank 15 ounces! He's only drinking about 8 ounces of whole milk but I still BF and his pedi said it was fine. I do worry though that he is not getting enough since it seems like most LOs on here drink 15+ounces...
  • sounds fine to me!  Miss A has never been a big cow's milk drinker.... from 13 months til about 20 months she'd drink about 5-8 oz/day (she was still nursing 5-6x/day) and for the last 2 months she's finally ramped up on her drinking and now drinks an average of 12oz/day! LOL some days she'll drink 20 and some days 9oz but on average I think she drinks about 12oz

I think as long as he's growing along his own growth curve you shouldn't have to worry about it

  • Good to know! Thanks! :)

  • My guys are funny about their milk consumption - some days they love it, others they hate it. On the hate days, I just try to up their dairy in other ways (cheese, yogurt) and hope it all balances out. Stick out tongue
  • also forgot to mention that they are not supposed to drink more than 24oz/day b/c excess milk will actually hinder absorption of other minerals/nutrients like iron.....

I read this, too.  But does other dairy also do that?  Because Kaya eats tons of yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, etc.  We try to feed her that stuff for the protein & fat rather than filling her up on less nutritious snacks.

DH said other dairy doesn't do that... just the cow's milk in liquid form
