Baby Names

Is Eleanor TOO old fasion?

DH and I recently realized we can't call these babies "A" and "B" forever so we started discussing names and I really love Eleanor because it was my favourite grandma's name but DH thinks it's too old fasion. We would probably call her "Ellie". What is your opinion?

  • Definitely not too old fashioned. I love that name, and the nickname. Good choice :)

  • I like it because it's a classic name that's not too common. Good pick!

  • I love the nn Ellie.  Eleanor is okay, but nms.  I don't think it is too old fashion though.
  • I like it.  I met or knew of three little girls named Eleanor in the college town where we used to live, so I think like a lot of old-fashioned names it's becoming quite popular.

  • NO WAY!

    I LOVE THAT NAME!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think it's wonderful. (And I'm a big fan of Eleanor Roosevelt, at that.)
  • I may be the dissenting opinion, but I agree with your husband. There are a lot of nice, classic names out there right now that do not sound as much like an old lady's name IMO.

  • I wouldn't use it because it sounds too old fashioned for me.  I just see short grey curly hair and smell mothballs when I think of it.

...I'm not into old fashioned names though.

  • Yes yes it is..

and Ellie seems to be overdone these days

I agree with this.  Too old lady for me.

  • This is near the top of our list. Great name!

However, Ellie is getting super popular and to me I feel like it takes away the beauty of the original name.

  • I love Eleanor with the nn Nora.  Ellie is getting overused a bit.  There's a baby in our group named Elliott who goes by Ellie.  I don't consider Eleanor too old lady, but I also like old fashioned names (our top names are Alice, Augusta and Ruby).

  • I don't really get the "old lady trend." it's just not my style at all I guess. And Eleanor is prob my least favorite name. Sorry. I do think Ellie is cute though.

  • I love Eleanor, although I prefer the spelling Elinor, and don't care for the nickname Ellie due to its overwhelming trendiness.

I think it's on the upswing, and not too old-ladyish at all.

  • We were just having this exact conversation last night - we're heavily considering it.  I love Eleanor of Aquitaine (very strong queen from Middle Ages).

  • Right now it still sounds old fashioned to me, but with all the little girls being named Eleanor now, I'm sure that will change. Ellie is really cute as a NN.

  • LOVE Eleanor.  It's on our list.  Dislike Ellie as a nickname, though, because at least in our circle, it is overused.  We would probably use Nora as a nickname.
  • Love Eleanor, but prefer the nn Nora.  Ellie seems to be used for every name that starts with El.  I have a niece that goes by Ellie.  She is Elizabeth.  I also know an Elliot and Eliza that go by Ellie.  Although I do think that Ellie is traditionally short of Eleanor.
  • For me - Yes.  To me it is very old and dusty and frumpy sounding.  But I know I am the minority.

Fwiw, I typically love older sounding names.  My DD is Katherine and some of the names that were at the top of my list were also "classic/old fashioned" names.  But Eleanor is just one of those names that nomatter how much I try I just can't fall in love with.

Seriously, though, it's a lovely name. We get tons of compliments.

  • I love Eleanor. Before we knew what we were having it was a top choice of mine for a girl.  MH nixed it because it made him think of Eleanor Rigby.  Lenore is also a great old fashioned name that I will be pushing for if we have a girl down the road.
  • I love, love, love the name Eleanor and desperately want to use it.  DH's cousin is named Eleanor so he's not comfortable using it as a first name.  I think it should just be Eleanor--no nickname needed.  Gorgeous and strong name with fantastic role models with the same name.

  • I don't think it's too old-fashioned at all.  It's a gorgeous, strong name.  I do think the nickname Ellie weakens the name though; it's way over-used and too cutesy!
