I just saw on FB that DH's 18-year-old nephew gave some chick a "promise ring." He's a high school senior and I think she's in her first year at community college.
Um. . .whaaaat?? Is this some pre-engagement ring ring or something? Should I be looking for our wedding invitation in the mail? Or is this just some silly thing kids do when (they think!) the're in love? ![]()
(In case anyone finds it odd that I saw this on FB - DH and his sister are 10 years apart in age and therefore not super close and don't keep in touch very well.)
Re: Help me understand kids these days :) Promise rings?
i think this about sums it up- ha.
look at the birds | bless this food
yes, it is like a placeholder for an engagement ring- a promise to get engaged. maybe they are doing it because they think they are too young to get engaged and get married?
my brother-in-law gave my sister-in-law one- they started dating when she was 18 and felt she was too young to get engaged (and subsequently married) at that age.
My high school boyfriend gave me a promise ring.
It's for when you KNOW you're to young to get engaged but really want to give the SO a nice piece of jewelery with a symbolic meaning that screams "taken"
I think it's a way of saying: "We're insanely in love and super committed to each other until someone better comes along, one of us moves out of town for college or the wind blows."
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
haha...this. and i don't think it's anything new...i remember promise rings when i was that age. (and thinking they were so dumb! (no offense, howley!))

This rings a bell to me, too, but I thought that SURELY I was good in assuming that this is something different
I guess I just didn't know anyone in HS who really even thought they were in love! We dated, sure, but that was pretty much it. We all couldn't wait to move on to bigger and better things
Yep my BIL had one and then his dad walked in on him and his girfriend
Guess that was the end of that.

I had one. We met as college freshmen and talked about getting married when we were 20(ish). We both got scared and knew we were WAY too young. So he got me a promise ring. I wore it until we got engaged 3 years later...AFTER we graduated college.

Yep I am thinking so.
At least these kids are getting some bling out of the deal. All we got was a jacket 3x too big.

Promise rings are a big deal where I live. Most of the girls in my Senior class had them because their boyfriends were leaving to go on LDS missions and wanted to the girl to wait for him until he got back. Then the plan was to get engaged and married.
I always thought it was dumb. But to each their own!
no kidding:)
