3rd Trimester

To dye or not to dye

So I will be 30 weeks on Monday with baby #3. My hair looks like crap LOL I have a lot of greys and it just isn't pretty.

My DR said dying your hair was ok, but for some reason I am a little freaked out to dye it.

Anyone dye their hair ?? or have dyed it during previous pregnancies and everything with baby was fine?

I am just needing a pick me up and I haven't done anything to my hair but cut it since January.

Thanks Ladies.

Re: To dye or not to dye

  • You should dye it. Just make sure it's a well vented area.

  • I dyed mine the day after I got my BFP, and three (I think) times since then. Go for it.

  • I'm a little bit ashamed to say I did.  A NICU nurse and my doctors told me it was perfectly fine, so I went ahead and did once a month.  I was scared during first trimester, but started to do it after.

  • You should dye it.My SIL 38weeks and gets hers done all the time.

  • I've had my highlights done twice this pregnancy. I ended up waiting until 2nd tri, but that was when I was due for a touch up :)

  • Either get it done in a salon or make sure you are in a well-ventilated space in your house.

Think about it....colorists don't quit their jobs when they get pregnant, right?

  • I work in a hair salon, and I dyed my hair twice since I've been pregnant. And I just got my haircut at work yesterday and one of my fellow preggo co-workers was getting her hair dyed too. They say highlights aren't as bad as one solid color....but i don't know how accurate that is. And as long as it's a well ventilated area like other people said, I think you'll be fine!

  • Just do it!  I am sure it'll make you feel better...

  • I got a dye job yesterday. my doctor complimented me on it.
    She said it's  safe

  • Go for it!  I've had mine done 2x since BFP with this one and had mine done 3x when I was pregnant with DD.

  • I vote to do it!  Dye your hair!

I've heard there is more risk of inhaling ammonia when using window cleaner than getting your hair dyed!  Not that either will likely cause any issues for you or your baby...

  • Do it. I never stopped in either of my preg, but I did slack towards the end with DS1 and it shows in the pics.

  • I color my hair every 8 weeks! Never a day late!! I would hate to see my hair if I went my whole pregnancy without coloring it, scary!

  • I dyed my hair once or twice my last pregnancy. I just opened a window and everything was fine. I plan on dying my hair soon.

Exactly! Hairstylist over here!! If I couldn't do my job, I would be up the creek. Yes, I get my color done too, and my first born has two eyes, ten fingers, ten toes, and is a genius.

  • I have several stylist friends whoa all dyed their own hair and their clients' hair throughout their pregnancies.

Pregnant stylists and nail techs still do all kinds of things -- dye, chemical relaxers and straighteners, keratin treatments, nail glue, acetone -- and most go on to have perfectly normal, healthy babies.

  • Dye it but be careful, do a spot test even if you are using a dye you have used before. My skin is much more sensitive since I've been pregnant and the dye I was using before pregnancy makes my scalp itch something awful. I would definitely do a patch test first and then dye the whole thing just to be sure you won't have a bad reaction. Also dye in a well ventilated area as everyone else has mentioned :)

  • My doctor told me it was definitely totally fine!  I had been trying to skate by with just highlights for as long as I could, but my doc totally put my mind at ease about dying it.  Plus, you take a ton of pictures at your babies birth that you will look at forever, and who wants roots in those??

  • I've dyed my hair twice this pregnancy with my MW's okay, once around 16 weeks and once around 27 weeks. I will probably dye it again in a few weeks since it's looking pretty crappy.

As long as you make sure you're in a well ventilated area, you are fine. Go for it!

  • I've been having my hair dyed since I got pregnant.  My stylist just uses a little less developer in the mixture, and I always am the first appointment so I don't have to smell a lot of other people having their hair dyed as well.  My doctor told me that it's perfectly fine, and that was good enough for me!
  • Even though I was given the go ahead by my OB I was a little worried--she suggested highlights--very little product actually comes in contact with your scalp that way.

  • I got my hair highlighted throughout this pregnancy and with my last one.

With my last one I got it highlighted a couple of weeks before my due date and we joked in the hospital that it seeped into my son because he came out with the most awesome set of highlights in his hair.  People would pay good money to get his hair.

  • I had my hair foiled so that nothing touched my scalp, just to be on the safe side.  I feel so much better without the gray hairs!!  I say go for it!

  • Alright ladies I did it. I booked an appointment today and I go in, in 45 mins. I need some blonde highlights to cover up this grey. WOOHOO!

Thank you all for replying you made me all feel more comfortable.

  • Absolutely! My sister is a hair stylist... the only thing to be weary of is your hormones because they can do some crazy things with your hair color! haha I got a brown color that ended up BRIGHT RED! haha Another girl wanted the same color (she's pregnant too) and she could not get her hair to turn red for anything! Luckily I got my hair fixed and it looks really good! :) I say do it. It will make you feel so much better just like mine did!

  • I do, about every 6 weeks in a higly ventilated room

  • I definitely dye my hair a lot less now, being k/u, than I do normally but these grays have GOT to be covered.  My next appointment is late next month & I will be 35 weeks.  I do schedule the first appointment of the day so that the smell isn't as strong.  I did the same thing with DS & he is perfectly healthy.
