How do you dispose of your diapers?

I've kinda been hearing that the diaper genies are a waste of money.  Agree/disagree?

  • IMO, they're gross and they smell bad. Most of them advertise that they contain the smell. Yeah, until you empty the gigantic diaper sausage... but at that point the stench of rotting diapers has been contained in a small box for weeks. That smell could stop an elephant in it's tracks.

We have a small bathroom trash can in DS' room, beside the changing table. I keep a plastic bag in it since the can itself is somewhat heavy. I just grab the bag and toss in the outside trash when it's full.

No smell at all in our house.

Target has a line of RE bathroom essentials that are brightly colored (there are more colors in store than online). We have the green trash can. It matches DS' room and doesn't look like R2D2 is hanging out in the corner. Oh, and we just bought the matching canister to keep q-tips and cotton balls on the changing table. That works great too.

  • My son is 18 months and I still love my diaper genie. I also use the mini arm & hammer bags for large explosions or when I am changing him downstairs.  We change the diaper genie on trash night and never have smelly issues. We used them for all diapers until we moved to a two story home now a diaper caddie and the bags are just more convenient when we aren't near his room.  GL!

  • I thought a diaper genie was a waste of money, and 5 months in, I'm not regretting the choice.  We use a small step-open can from Target that uses grocery bags.  We just toss the bag daily (or after a particularly stinky diaper), and then occasionally give the can itself a spray of Lysol.  No smells here.  Our garbage can is in the garage which is just off the kitchen which makes it very handy to get rid of the bags regularly.

While I know some find the Diaper Genie type cans useful, it just wasn't practical for us and seemed like a waste.  When she starts eating solids and the diapers change, we may have a different opinion as well.

  • Completely gross, the last thing I want is a stinky diaper fermenting in a sealed container in his room.  We use plastic grocery bags,  if it's a poo we throw it in there and toss it in our garage trash ASAP, otherwise, we throw the pees away each night.

  • Small Stainless Steel Step Can...it's been amazing for a year now.  It doesn't keep stink in, and it will be able to be used as a regular trash can once DD is potty-trained.  This one:

  • We just use a stainless steel trash can and it works fine for us.

  • A waste in my opinion. I use a small ss simple human trash can and change it daily.

This is what we do, too.  We do cloth diapers during the day and disposables at night. Unless DS does a huge poo in a disposable, we don't really have to change the bag out more often than once every couple of days. Young baby pee is very mild.

  • I have the Diaper Genie Elite and I love it.  It definitely contains the smell.  I have to admit that I give the plastic refill holder a manual spin with every diaper I put in there, making every diaper an individual sausage.  This is contrary to the way it should be used but hey- whatever works!

  • DS only poops once a day so maybe our situation is different. I just use a smell step trash can and empty it after he poops.
