prob shldnt have done that but it just seems too weird. im not drinking some sugary drink thats prob gonna give me diabetes from drinking it. and how am i suppose to know whats in it?? im very careful about what i eat and drink and i have a good idea they wont tell me the ingredients. lol...my grandma is a retired nurse so imma ask her about it. most likely ill reschedule but i dont like sweets. i dont even drink koolaid! yuck!
Re: skipped out on my glucose test
I mean, it isn't going to taste good, especially if you don't like sweets. Its not unbearable though. Also, if you are concerned whats in it I bet you could find that info on the internet.
My thought is this...While I get that you are careful about what you eat, wouldn't you like to know if something was going on with your body that could potentially affect your baby? I just think there is a reason our doctors make us do this test.
Newsflash: you are having a baby, so life no longer revolves around YOU. Take the test- it's not that bad. Wouldn't you rather know if your body has special dietary needs while you are pregnant? IMO, you are being selfish.
i agree. This isnt like skipping out on a NT scan, this is telling you your health so you DONT damage yourself or your child. why would you want to risk that?
This is a pretty ignorant post OP. Drinking a glass of Hi-C or soda or the glucose drink is not going to give you diabetes.
And when I took the test I read the ingredients right off the side of the bottle. It was actually much less sugar in it than I expected.
There is this amazing thing called "google". Want to know about the test - try googling it!
What is the glucose test?
https://www.babycenter.com/0_glucose-screening-and-glucose-tolerance-tests_1483.bc
What causes gestational diabetes?
https://diabetes.webmd.com/guide/gestational_diabetes
In case you want to "skip out" on the reading - gestational diabetes is not caused by what you eat - it's caused by hormones your body produces during pregnancy and by the placenta. If these get out of whack and your body tries to compensate and produce more insulin, you can end up with GD.
I don't mean to come across too harshly, but really - why would you skip out on a test rather than just asking questions or doing research yourself? And what kind of response did you think you'd get posting about it?
It's only going to get worse once everyone else wakes up...
As a nurse, I think that you = dumb.
It's there for a reason, put your friggin big girl panties on and drink it. Seriously. Its like 50 mL. It won't kill you. But hey, having GD just might make your baby very very sick.
How old are you? 17?!
I cannot believe how ridiculous people on this site are about this test. Especially the one hour.
You drink, they draw blood, you maybe puke. You'll effing live.
Sheesh.
First of all, SUGAR DOES NOT CAUSE DIABETES. Gestational or otherwise. Drinking the glucose drink will not cause you to develop diabetes. A stomach ache, maybe, diabetes, no.
Second, do you have any idea how very very serious GD really is? What it can do to your baby if left untreated? It's more than "just a big baby" - left untreated GD can cause stillbirth, jaundice and high blood sugars in newborns, poor lung development leading to respiratory issues, and premature aging/breaking down of the placenta, which means baby isn't getting the nutrients he/she needs to survive. Do you really want to risk all of that (and more) just so you don't have to drink the glucose and get poked with a needle?
Seriously, this isn't about you. It's about your child. Quit being selfish and take the test.

It's not that bad. It wont GIVE you diabetes, or else I would've gotten it three times. It's to check your tolerance to it. I drink all kinds of suguray drinks and they've never told me I have GD.
I wouldn't skip it.

The whole point of the test is to give you an elevated blood sugar to see how your pancreas processes the glucose! 18% of pregnant women have GD and they all dont get it just because they eat or drink sugary things. I think you should have edjucated yourself on this topic before you made yourself sound selfish.
Seriously?! You really think drinking it will give you GD? With that logic, everyone would therefore be diagnosed with GD and guess what? We aren't!
Take the test for YOUR CHILD'S sake. It's not the end of the world.
I want to think that too but something is telling me it's not.
OP: I want to e-slap you through my computer. Stop being stupid and take the fvcking test. It's in your baby's best interest. How could you ever forgive yourself if you have GD and your baby had complications, or worse, stillbirth, all because you didn't feel like drinking a stupid orange-flavored drink?
You really need to reschedule this and get the test done.
Honestly it is a very important test and all of us need to do it. I have drank it twice and it wasn't bad. Not that i loved it, but I could handle it. It really isn't all that much and it is just 1 hour out of your day to make sure you and your baby are safe.
This.
I totally agree. Your doctor needs to know if you have this so your baby can be healthy. It's doesn't taste bad and it's not even that much. I highly doubt your doctor would make you drink something that was bad for your baby. Suck it up and think about your baby's needs.
This. Seems all rather silly to me. Do you really think your doc would emphasize doing something like this if it put you or your LO at risk?

Lurker here, but OP, you are the one of the most ignorant and selfish people! Grow up! You're having a baby. You're supposed to be caring for this baby now. The glucose drink wasn't anywhere near as sweet as orange juice. And what on earth are you going to do during labor and delivery?? Skip out on that too?
#1. The drink will not give you diabetes.
#2. Just because you eat healthy doesn't mean you're not at risk.
#3. It's a serious issue. Your baby's health is more important than you not liking the taste of kool aid.
#4. Saying imma makes you sound like an idiot.
You're an idiot.
Take your head out of your as$ for a second and educate yourself. It will not cause GD and it could save you and your LO from major complications.
What an intelligent, compelling explanation for why you chose to opt out of such an important test!
I want to believe this is MUD but if it's not-- grow up.
