Re: skipped out on my glucose test

  • Its really not bad...and its not even a large amount. You should take the test.

  • I too am mindful well mostly of what I eat.  I don't drink sugary drinks or eat anything made with white sugar.  I just knew that the drink they would make me drink would raise my sugar since I don't intake sugar.  It did and I had to be retested for the 3 hrs test.  On top of that I have a morbit fear of injections so this first test and then second 3 hrs one was TORTURE! Still I indured it all because in the end I had to do what is best for my LO.  If I skipped the test then turned out be sick with GD (thank goodness I am not) I would never forgive myself for causing her harm.  I don't want to remember all that I read could happen to your fetus because you are sick and letting it go untreated.  Not to mention what affects it could have on you.  Also I read that half of women with GD will get diabetes type 2 in their lifetime.  I know it is a nasty drink to swallow and the injection is painful but rescheduel and get it over with.  I am not trying to preach here so please don't take it the wrong way.  I just feel concerned for you and your LO.  Good luck to you both.

  • I mean, it isn't going to taste good, especially if you don't like sweets. Its not unbearable though. Also, if you are concerned whats in it I bet you could find that info on the internet.

My thought is this...While I get that you are careful about what you eat, wouldn't you like to know if something was going on with your body that could potentially affect your baby? I just think there is a reason our doctors make us do this test.

Comparing koolaid and a glucose drink used for lab testing of diabetes is laughable.

  • Yah...sorry but you are being dumb. It's 1 drink and it's basically made of orange flavor, water and glucose. Take the da&# test for your childs sake. I would have a 15 lb baby if my GD had not been detected early on.

All this. If I could impress upon you the seriousness of having GD, I would. Right now it is causing me a lot of stress. Be a responsible adult and take the test for your child's well being.

  • Newsflash: you are having a baby, so life no longer revolves around YOU.  Take the test- it's not that bad.  Wouldn't you rather know if your body has special dietary needs while you are pregnant?  IMO, you are being selfish.

i agree. This isnt like skipping out on a NT scan, this is telling you your health so you DONT damage yourself or your child. why would you want to risk that?

  • Do you also skip out of papsmears and ignore breast exams because you take really good care of yourself and eat healthy? Did you tell them not to do the RH test because that would never happen to you? What about peeing in the cup? Surely you've opted out of that because preeclampsia only happens to losers. I really don't see why you have to go to the dr. in the first place since you're such a fine specimen of health.
  • Ditto all this.  3-5 oz of a glucose drink will not give you diabetes.  Undiagnosed GD will cause major problems (including type 2 diabetes and possible fetal death).  Ask your dr. It's not a conspiracy- drs. really are looking out for your best interests.

  • Wow! It's D50 in liquid form... 50 percent Dextrose with some flavoring to make it tolerable. Can I just tell you a story about gestational diabetes? I know someone that negligently skipped out on the test, had GD, didn't know it and/or refused to believe it and gave birth to a stillborn. Think about that the next time you're "cautious" about what you put in your body. Ask for an IV then and have them squeeze D50 into your veins... Now that's NOT pleasant.

This is a pretty ignorant post OP. Drinking a glass of Hi-C or soda or the glucose drink is not going to give you diabetes.

And when I took the test I read the ingredients right off the side of the bottle. It was actually much less sugar in it than I expected.

  • A can of root beer has more sugar in it than the glucose drink.
  • There is this amazing thing called "google". Want to know about the test - try googling it!

    What is the glucose test?
    https://www.babycenter.com/0_glucose-screening-and-glucose-tolerance-tests_1483.bc

    What causes gestational diabetes?

    https://diabetes.webmd.com/guide/gestational_diabetes

In case you want to "skip out" on the reading - gestational diabetes is not caused by what you eat - it's caused by hormones your body produces during pregnancy and by the placenta. If these get out of whack and your body tries to compensate and produce more insulin, you can end up with GD.

I don't mean to come across too harshly, but really - why would you skip out on a test rather than just asking questions or doing research yourself? And what kind of response did you think you'd get posting about it?

  • As a nurse, I think that you = dumb.

It's there for a reason, put your friggin big girl panties on and drink it. Seriously. Its like 50 mL. It won't kill you. But hey, having GD just might make your baby very very sick.

    How old are you? 17?!

  • I'm allergic (food intolerance) to an ingredient in the drink so I asked my OB for other options.  She said I could test my blood sugar everyday for roughly 4 weeks and if everything looked okay they would "pass me" for not having it or I could choose to assume I had it and they would treat my as a GD.  I decided to just take the test but I did they 3 hour so I wouldn't have to drink the stuff twice if I failed the 1 hour.

  • I cannot believe how ridiculous people on this site are about this test. Especially the one hour.

You drink, they draw blood, you maybe puke. You'll effing live.

    Sheesh.

  • Ummm, the ingredients are listed on the bottle and I am pretty d*mn sure any decent doctor or nurse would tell you what the drink is, how it effects your body and what they are looking for in the test results.  You just sound ignorant.
  • First of all, SUGAR DOES NOT CAUSE DIABETES. Gestational or otherwise. Drinking the glucose drink will not cause you to develop diabetes. A stomach ache, maybe, diabetes, no.

Second, do you have any idea how very very serious GD really is? What it can do to your baby if left untreated? It's more than "just a big baby" - left untreated GD can cause stillbirth, jaundice and high blood sugars in newborns, poor lung development leading to respiratory issues, and premature aging/breaking down of the placenta, which means baby isn't getting the nutrients he/she needs to survive. Do you really want to risk all of that (and more) just so you don't have to drink the glucose and get poked with a needle?

Seriously, this isn't about you. It's about your child. Quit being selfish and take the test.

  • It's not that bad. It wont GIVE you diabetes, or else I would've gotten it three times.  It's to check your tolerance to it.  I drink all kinds of suguray drinks and they've never told me I have GD.

    I wouldn't skip it.

The whole point of the test is to give you an elevated blood sugar to see how your pancreas processes the glucose! 18% of pregnant women have GD and they all dont get it just because they eat or drink sugary things. I think you should have edjucated yourself on this topic before you made yourself sound selfish.

  • Are you for real?  The ignorance in this post make me even MORE sure that you should have this test because you don't even have an understanding of how the test works.  It's glucose.  Concentrated sugar water.  And nothing you eat or drink GIVES you diabetes.  Diabetes is caused by your pancreas being unable to process sugar you ingest.  You don't have to eat sweets to have that problem. There's sugar in fruit too. If you don't understand any of this, how do you expect to be able to prevent your LO from suffering the effects of undiagnosed gestational diabetes?

OP: I want to e-slap you through my computer. Stop being stupid and take the fvcking test. It's in your baby's best interest. How could you ever forgive yourself if you have GD and your baby had complications, or worse, stillbirth, all because you didn't feel like drinking a stupid orange-flavored drink?

Honestly it is a very important test and all of us need to do it. I have drank it twice and it wasn't bad. Not that i loved it, but I could handle it. It really isn't all that much and it is just 1 hour out of your day to make sure you and your baby are safe.

I totally agree.  Your doctor needs to know if you have this so your baby can be healthy.  It's doesn't taste bad and it's not even that much.  I highly doubt your doctor would make you drink something that was bad for your baby.  Suck it up and think about your baby's needs.

Lurker here, but OP, you are the one of the most ignorant and selfish people!  Grow up!  You're having a baby.  You're supposed to be caring for this baby now.  The glucose drink wasn't anywhere near as sweet as orange juice.  And what on earth are you going to do during labor and delivery??  Skip out on that too?

  • #1. The drink will not give you diabetes.

#2. Just because you eat healthy doesn't mean you're not at risk.

#3. It's a serious issue. Your baby's health is more important than you not liking the taste of kool aid.

#4. Saying imma makes you sound like an idiot.
