Just wondering - while the baby is still pretty small, would a carseat (we're getting the Graco SnugRIde 35) and a Snap-N-Go be enough for a stroller/getting around? We are also looking at the BJ City Select, but I don't know if we'll be ready to make that purchase until a few months after the baby is born. And I'm not really interested in a travel system - heard too much negative feedback about how bulky/heavy they are.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

Re: Is a carseat & snap-n-go enough (at least at first)?
Yes, it would be enough until you decide on what other stroller you might want.
Plus, you can then take baby to the store to try out the options.
I'm not really any help since I'm not due until December. However, we're going with the snap-n-go too. I think it's an awesome option. Not only because I hated the travel systems too but because I don't want to have to wake up baby to take him in the store. Especially since it will be winter when he gets here.
I'm scoping out baby consignment stores, craigslist, etc for a used one. I'm not a big fan of used baby equipment but figure it's not like the LO actually touches the snap-n-go so it should be okay. And I'm sure there's a ton out there that haven't gotten a lot of use.
We're registering for a lightweight stroller for when he gets a bit bigger.
As for the PP that says that no baby should be in a car seat for long periods of time. I do agree with this. I think it's a matter of how much you plan to use any type of stroller. But really....you can controll this yourself by monitoring how much time LO is laying in the same position. Car seat, stroller, crib, etc...LO needs positions changed no matter what. It's not like the snap and go is the killer! I'm even considering the "boppy noggin nest" as an extra measure against flat head, etc.
We have a Snap-n-Go and love it. It is so easy to go out with DD. We pop her car seat out of the base, stick it in the stroller and we're on our way! Just to give you a timeline, DD is just over 5 months and we still use it. We are going to move her to a convertible car seat soon, but we have used the SNG a lot in these first few months.
Also, to the PP who doesn't like used baby equipment, you know you can clean things you buy at consignment stores, right? We have a few things that we bought used. I refused to pay $40 for a new Bumbo when I could get one for $10 at a consignment store. I wiped it down with Clorox wipes and it was good to go. Everything we have bought used has been in excellent condition.
Huh? All travel systems have the baby sitting in the carseat until he/she has good enough neck control to be in the big stroller. Most other strollers have carseat adapters because they are more safe the putting a newborn in the stroller, even fully reclined. Most recommend 6 months before using a stroller without a car-seat adapter.
Yeah, I agree with this. The solution to not having a baby lay down in a carseat all the time would be to wear him. Either way if you're out and about for a longer time, a carseat or a stroller that he could lay flat in would be doing the same "damage" as far as getting a flat head.
And yes, a snap n go is all you need. This is what we did and later got a Chicco Liteway when he was old enough to sit up in it.
This!
It's not flat head. It's air flow. Any child in the car seat, which is a 45 degree angle is not getting enough oxygen to the brain to be considered optimal. It's obviously the best angle for the car safety, but not for life outside the car. Just because companies make these things in no way makes them healthy for regular usage. The best option for an infant in a stroller is a bassinet. Think of the logic - you can't put a child in a stroller seat because it doesn't lie fully flat until 6 months...but you can keep a child sitting with their chin in their chest instead?
Yes. I did this with my son until he turned 6 months. Although he was fine on weight, he is very tall so we moved him up to a convertible car seat, then bought an Uppababy G-Luxe (nice umbrella stroller). 2 years ago they didn't have all the awesome stroller options there are now. Now I just bought a double stroller off craigslist. I refuse to be one of the moms that owns 8 strollers- I think 3 is a lot, LOL.
I agree with PP for buying the snap n go used. It's very easy to clean off, probably one the easiest to clean gear things you could buy for baby- save your money for a stroller you'll use for a long period of time.
Agreed. We'll get a snap'n'go for short trips with just the baby. If we're out with both kids DD can be in the stroller and we'll wear the baby. Baby shouldn't be in the regular stroller at the beginning anyway.
We registered for a Maclaren when I was pregnant with DD and it sat in the closet unused until she was 5-6 months old.
I keep hearing this, but my question is, how do you take the baby out for extended periods of time if they're too little for anything but a car seat?
