Hi all,
I just found out I need to have my wisdom teeth removed asap because of an infection in one of them. I will need to be put to sleep via IV during the extraction.
The timing of this is terrible because I will be nearing the end of my TWW the day it is scheduled to happen (CD26, 11 or 12 dpo). Does anyone know if this will hurt my chances of becoming pregnant this cycle, or hurt the fetus (if there is one?). One of my friends said it wont effect it that early but I want to be sure..... thanks so much!!!
Re: OK to have wisdom teeth removed during TWW?
You should be able to get them out with just a local anesthetic. I would talk to your dentist about this.
Well I'm torn--
If I wait to see if I am pregnant this cycle (and if i get a BFP) then at that point it's definitely too late to take them out. Then I may have to wait months until it's safe to have them taken out and in the meantime I may have to take medications that could hurt the baby to fight the pain and infection.
I was hoping if I got it done asap that I could do it before it effected anything, but just am not sure at what point in the early early stages of development stuff like that can effect the fetus.
This
..really?! Oh that's great news if that's true. May I ask how you know that?
Thanks!
Agreed. OP you should really talk to your doctor. I was on an antibiotic and 800 mg of ibuprofen after the surgery. I am sure the pain meds can be substituted and the antibiotic was pregnancy safe. I personally cannot imagine being awake during a wisdom tooth extraction, but if you can stomach the noises and tugging than that is an option for sure.
There have been lots of pregnant women who have gotten their wisdom teeth pulled. Talk to your doc. We can only offer you our opinion.

Oh wow great to know I'm not the only one with this issue!!
As far as local anesthetic goes-- to be honest i have a TERRIBLE phobia of the dentist (I've never had a cavity or braces or ANY work done to my mouth except normal cleanings). So the thought of having 4 teeth pulled and having to be awake though it --- I don't think I could go though with it!!! I would be crying and probably run out screaming lol...
But please DO tell me what your dentist says! Again for me it will be right around the time I can take a pregnancy test, but may not know for sure by then.
Thanks!
Personally I would do anything to have a happy healthy baby. I would do my best to avoid all potential risks.
I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed at one time with only a local anesthetic. It wasn't bad at all. I would do like PPs are suggesting and talk to both of your doctors nonetheless. Good luck!
This.
My dad is a dentist and removed all of my wisdom teeth with local anesthetic. He does it with all his patients. Not only is it easier for the dentist to get the teeth out with your cooperation, it also makes it go faster. Not to mention it is more natural on your body and you generally heal faster.
Even though my dad did the procedure when he first started going in to my mouth I admit, I freaked out. He stopped for a minute and breathed with me. Then he put a movie on (do I sound as juvenile as I think?) and I was okay the rest of the procedure.
If your situation can avoid going under, I would take it. Just be open with your doctor about your concerns, hopefully they will be caring enough to work with you. I know dentists get a bad rap, so lets hope you don't have one that actually deserves it.
Be honest with your oral surgeon but get them out!
If you are KU, pregnancy can cause your mouth and gums to be more sensitive and can cause more dental issues.
Get them out now because the infection could harm the potential baby.
It is possible your dentist can do the extraction with local anesthetic, but I'm going to guess unlikely, and here's why. I had an infection in one of my incisors, and it got so bad, they had to do a surgery called an apicoectomy to drill out the infection from the bone above the infected tooth. The local anesthetic would not take at first because the infection and inflammation was so bad, which is common when there is an infection. My understanding is that wisdom tooth extractions, though they are normally common, can be complicated by the tooth having multiple roots, etc, so that, combined with the infection and inflammation, it may actually be to your advantage to do it under sedation or anesthesia. This is just my opinion, though, and your dentist is the one who knows all of the details as to whether it would be an option. Keep in mind that in the case of infection and inflammation, local anesthetics sometimes don't take very well.
Great not an option for you. Its on option for me if its between a potential risk or being too scared to have my teeth pulled without being under general anesthesia.
If you're not willing to go through it then don't. I'm not judging you for decisions you make about your own body.

Its really not bad. Of all the procedures I've had done without general anesthesia (and I've had a lot) having my wisdome teeth out was the easiest. You can do it! Good luck with whichever decision you make. I hope you have a speedy recovery and all goes well and I wish the same to you OP.
Thanks to all for your words of advice and wisdom! I will definitely talk to my doctors about the possibility of me being pregnant and see what they say, but either way I have to get these suckers out of my mouth, their killing me!! Hopefully I can be put to sleep, but if they say no way then I will have to tough it out.
Thanks again all!
