Pregnant after a Loss

FREAKING OUT! T&P needed

Well after a seemingly uneventful pregnancy I started spotting red today.  Ironically I had just gotten home from buying my first pair of maternity jeans. :-/  Anyway, I noticed the dark red spotting (no clots) when I wiped after using the restroom.  I immediately went straight to the ER.  The u/s showed a very active, healthy baby with a normal heart rate (151).  The tech said she saw no reason for the bleeding except that my placenta appeared to be "low" which MIGHT cause it.  But before the u/s tech took me to get the u/s done they asked for a urine sample. When I used the restroom I was no longer bleeding.  After my u/s however they did a pelvic exam.  The doctor confirmed that my cervix is closed but during his exam I started bleeding much heavier.  They discharged me with a "threatened miscarriage" diagnosis. Before discharging me the doctor said right now everything looks fine with the baby, but it could go either way.  So it's a waiting game at this point.  I am still bleeding since he did the exam, and now I feel crampy -- which I did not have prior to the ER.  Anyway, I have never had a good outcome from this diagnosis before, some positive stories would really be helpful right now. On the bright side, I've also never made it to second trimester before either.

  • I am sorry that you are going thru this.  I had bright red bleeding at 12 weeks.  Went to the Er where they found nothing and good u/s.  I haven't had any more spotting since then.  I hope the same happens for you and it end up being nothing.  Thinking lots of positive thoughts for you and baby.

  • You've just described the exact same experience I had around 16 weeks. After seeing everything was okay at the ER, the next day I saw my OB who diagnosed placenta previa. Because I was bleeding he put me on bedrest for 2 weeks until it resolved itself. Hopefully, FX, this is the same thing you are going through. Make sure to see your OB ASAP. Ts&Ps.

  • I know so many ladies on here have had your same situation and carried their babies to full term. I'm keeping you in my thoughts.

Are you going to see your doctor tomorrow?

  • I am so sorry you're going through this scary situation. Many T&P and well wishes to you!
  • The good news is baby looks good. A very active baby is a good thing and that is a good heartbeat.  I started spotting at about 12 weeks with this one and we dont know why it hasnt come back and baby is fine and hopefully it never comes back.  Also my friend at 12 ish weeks had gushing bright red blood went to Dr and she had a rip in the placenta it was low and close to cervix, but baby was untouched and is she is expecting a baby girl in a few months.  I hope all turns out well for you too there are just so many unexplainable reasons why this happens and not all turn out bad.

  • Yeah, I am going to follow up with my OB tomorrow.  Praying the bleeding subsides and I get positive feedback from my OB.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.  I just don't know why it is taking so long for the bleeding to stop since I left the ER, when it had completely stopped before they did the exam.  Ugh...

  • ((HUGE HUGS)) I'm sorry you're going through this! A low placenta can definitely cause bleeding, so hopefully that is the answer. Did you see an OB in the ED or just an ED doc? If it was just an ED doc, I would call your OB too to tell them what is going on. Stay put LO!!!

Everything that I've quoted above (excuse the ..., didn't need to quote the whole post) is really making me thing sensitive cervix.

I had sensitive cervix in 1st Tri and even something as minor as a BM could lead to spotting which would then clear up pretty quickly (you mention yours was gone for your PIAC).  I also had bleeding after my doc did my pap that looked like something out of a slasher film.  It lessened relatively quickly (several hours) and cleared up within a day or so.  Vagcam and intercourse also led to spotting for me...pretty much if there was a disturbance in that general area, I'd spot.   I'm wondering if the cramping you're having might be from the pelvic exam.  I know in years past I've had some general discomfort after those.  Just a thought.

It could also be placenta previa.

I have had several bleeding episodes during my pregnancy- one at 8 weeks where we were sure we were losing the baby, and additional bleeding around 14/19/23 weeks. So far my LO is still cooking and I'll be 27 weeks on Wednesday. I am really praying that everything turns out okay.

  • Oh no!  I am so sorry!!  I'm sending you boatloads of good juju and you'll be in my thoughts.  I had bleeding last week and it was due to a polyp on my cervix.  Note:  I had an u/s 5 days earlier and the polyp wasn't there - I guess it was working itself out.  They removed the polyp on Monday, but I continued to bleed and have cramping all week - my docs said the polyp really irritated my cervix - plus the vag u/s and the stupid speculum used during the exams.  Yesterday was the first day that I didn't have any bleeding and the cramping finally stopped.  I know this is so scary right now - but right now try to focus on the fact that the baby looked great.  I really, really hope the bleeding and cramping stop right away.  ((HUGE HUGS))

  • ((Hugs)) I am so sorry you're going through this. I did have some spotting this pregnancy in the second trimester, but although it was bright red, it was not heavy. They never determined a cause, although it was probably related to having an irritable cervix. Internal exams could definitely cause spotting if you have an irritable cervix, so I hope it's something along those lines at this point. Sending tons of thoughts and prayers your way!
