I have had back pain since the end of May, but the past 11 days it has become horrible and I can barely care for my children. I'm meeting with a chiropractor tonight and I have a referral for PT from my PCP for tomorrow. Ibuprofen and Tylenol aren't making a dent in the pain at this point. I'm just so frustrated with the pain and also concerned about what lies ahead as far as treatment. I'm lucky that my sister was able to come down (family lives 2 hours away) to help until Saturday, but I'm a SAHM and on my own next week. DD is already 20 pounds, so obviously caring for her is hard putting her in the crib and such. I've had back pain before and pulled my back before, but this is a whole new level of pain that is getting worse everyday.
Enough of that rambling.
Just wondering if anybody else dealt with major back issues and had to do stronger meds or something while still BFing? My biggest concern is that this will go on for awhile and meds/treatment might not be compatible with BFing. On the other hand, if I can't take care of my kids it doesn't matter if I'm BFing or not.
Re: Back pain treatment while BFing?
You can take percoset and vicodin and BF. Some muscle relaxers too, like flexeril. Pair up ibuprofen and the prescriptin painkillers, that's my dream combo.
Try a chiropractor and physical therpy. I have chronic back pain, so I know how it can be.
I just try to stretch and take it easy.

The LC I talked to yesterday said Flexeril, but the doc's office said no to it. He was saying Tylenol 3 and pump and dump (at least the nurse thought that's what his notes said). So annoying and not helpful at all, you know? I'm hoping the chiropractor has more insight today since they were the ones that I was going to go to prior to my VBAC if I went too far past my edd. Much more mama/baby-friendly practice!
I will take something if I need it, I'm just wondering how long I'd feel comfortable taking it and BFing. For a couple days, sure. A couple weeks/months, not so sure.
I'm sorry you've been dealing with chronic back pain. Just this little dose of it is rocking my world and I went med-free for my birth!
Your doc is WRONG WRONG WRONG.
Flexeril is TOTALLY OK my pharmacist, OB and LC all said to take it if I needed it. Tylenol 3 has codeine which is regularly given after c-sections.He is way off base. I hate that you are getting incorrect information.
Also the older they are, the less they nurse and the better they metabolize. I have valiums as a muscle relaxer and if I need to take one I just don't nurse and feed a bottle. I pump for comfort. There is absolutely no need to ever pump and dump except for your own comfort or to keep your supply going.
